Guitar Greats | RIP Sylvain Sylvain - The New York Dolls 

In 2013 Syl toured the Uk - I played bass and Gary Powell ( Libertines) played drums . On the final night at the 100 club Glen Matlock and Clem Burke joined us - it was magic . Syl was an absolute sweetheart- I miss him very much .

I met Syl, I grew up in Tennessee wanting to be Johnny Thunders, I'd take clumps out of my hair with a razorblade and call that a haircut as a teenager. Years later all grown up I see Syl at a place in East Nashville. I know I fanned out on him the entire time and acted like a dork but he was really kind to me and we talked for about an hour. The news he died ripped right into me. They say don't meet your heroes but I feel incredibly lucky I got to meet one of mine.

My buddy and I got to hang out with Sylvain Sylvain at a '76 Dolls soundcheck at Cobo Arena in Detroit. He was such a nice guy. We drank beer and just talked rock n roll. It was an amazing day. Later, My buddy was arrested for public intoxication. I don't remember how I got home from downtown Detroit at night, in the Summer - My God! RIP Syl.

Absolutely one of the greats, and a fine songwriter as well. "Frankenstein" became so indelibly etched in my brain that when I started writing my own material, I unconsciously appropriated part of the chord progression from the Dolls classic. The song containing that fragment became the A-side of my band's only single...and for that, I offer my eternal gratitude to Sylvain Sylvain.

Dude was rock'n'roll. Rip.

I had a few beers with Sylvain at a sound check at Cobo Arena in 1976. He was a good guy!

The NYDolls Mark 1 were the best r'n'r band in the world.When they disbanded ,the greatest r'n'r in the world was the Heartbreakers,billed like Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers in UK by Malcom MacLaren.The NYDolls Mark 2,or 3 if you preferred(The 2 is the one with the commie look) with Steve Conte ,a great ,great guitar player ,were a divine surprise. I just luv those Sylvain Sylvain songs,like Teenage News,Emily ,14th Street Beat,Tu es formidable and so on Repose en paix(Rest in Peace in French)Sylvain Sylvain.

Goodness i had no idea that he was born in Egypt. I knew he was jewish...my goodness he truly was gorgeous when he was younger before the dolls. Those middle eastern genes are good stuff. I was surprised to hear this with all of the weird fadcist imagery that the dolls would do. With the communist flag and the swastika thing.
