You really are a great guitar player! And good teacher I would say, I need to improve a whole lot more on guitar, and your courses have been tempting me a lot... btw please do a habits of Marty Friedman, Kiko Loureiro or John Petrucci. Please!
Great video my friend! I learned the whole "Surfin with the Alien" album when it first came out. It took me about a month to figure out Joe's licks but eventually nailed it. I saw him touring the album for that year in Boston at the Avalon. Joe was my mentor because of that album. That album and his playing on it just blew me away! The back up band was playing and I was just watching them and a guy next to me said, "these guys are pretty good huh"? I briefly looked at him and said, not bad. Little did I know I was talking to my mentor JOE SATRIANI!! Had know Idea. He had shaved his head that year and was wearing sunglasses in the club, I thought it was weird. He started his show and I was mortified!! My favorite guitar player was trying to have conversation with me and all I was trying to do was wait for him to get on stage and play!! Lost my opportunity to ask him questions about his playing! Lost my touch with greatness! BUMMER!
I don't know HOW I missed these "Habits" series...I have been watching for a couple years...but I...LOVE...THEM! I completely agree, learning the habits is much better than just repeating riffs and licks. Great video as always.
Damn dude. Watching you for the first time. Inspiring to say the last. Satch fan for decades. Haven't picked up my axe for nearly 2 years. Learned so much from Joe and Steve. Now I'm learning from you. So much content to absorb. Respect 🙏
Great video..... Thanks for choosing the best guitarist's habit..... Satch is a musical genius and we all get to learn lots of things from him, not only guitar playing but also composition and that's what makes him a complete music god.... 👍👍👍
One thing I will point out about Joe. When he does the harmonics above the fretboard he actually switches hands. There are natural harmonics at the pickups. There is a video of Joe talking about them and showing where they
not trying to be cocky, please don't take this the wrong way, but the beginning before you started talking is literally how i start practising in the morning :D
i play about 2 hours a day but only in the past year have i practiced like that. ive only played for 2 years and the first year it was really just me finding some bands to listen to and play because before i got a guitar i never really listened to music for whatever reason
Hubert Cumberdale well, i was in the school band for 4 years and I've been listening to blues and rock since i was a toddler, so i had some head starts on music :D
To me, action (string height) is something to always point out. From experience, an off the shelf action makes a lot of Joe's stuff very frustrating to do. Especially when you are allowing the fingering hand to do a lot of the work. I know I spent the first 4 years of learning guitar and trying to learn his style was infuriating because the strings were too high. No one had explained "action" to me. It wasn't until I asked my new teacher how to actually do this kind of stuff. He took my guitar and pushed down on the string and said "Your strings are too damn high, take it and get the action adjusted lower". After my lesson, I took it to the local luthier and asked him to put new strings on and lower the action. The next day, I picked my guitar up and things were so much easier. I still had to work to get the two hand tapping stuff down but I didn't get that ringing sound when I tapped the strings.
Cool videos my friend. I know you get requests up the ying-yang, but a George Lynch (80's style) would be really cool. Keep up with the great videos. Always informative. Thank You.
That's exactly what I do I pick and choose techniques I like from my favorite players so for me I take from mostly vai and morello ...throw some srv in there with some bluesy licks any bright melodic scales I love ...but I got a soft spot for those phryigian dominant scales Marty Friedman plays
Frest99 I don't think he will do Paul Gilbert because there are thousands of videos about his style of play because unlike other guitarist that Tyler explain ,Paul actually show to people how he play
The acrobatics and stuff are cool until teenager hormones production is lowered over time, but one thing that I never get tired of Joe's playing is when he improvise bluesy solos in the mid section of the neck, those mid notes are pure magic, not so squeakly high neither so muddy low... Specially when using neck pickup \ o /
You should of a habits of Michael Hedges video.... Don't think I didn't notice that pick-tuck and the finger picking towards the end there. That was very smooth.
Discipline is the key to mastery..everything from raising kids to love requires discipline in order to keep balance and understanding...Joe uses discipline in everything he does ..just look at how he utilizes feedback in his music..many decades ago feedback was just an annoying sound..Hendrix improvised and used feedback to his advantage but Satriani took that shit to a whole new level....it only comes from discipline.
Hey Tyler, please do a habits of Plini video! Featuring his unique chord voicings, luscious melodies and syncopated rhythms. I think his compositions set him apart!!
Would love to hear your take on some country - maybe habits of Brad Paisley, Chet Atkins, Keith Urban, or Hunter Hayes? Thanks for all the great videos!
E Lydian just makes me think Dune soundtrack (was that Toto?)... and I think my neighbors are probably tired of hearing it from me about now, hehe. Great video!
