You should make another video about John Mayer, as he’s been working with dead and company his style has diversified immensely and even in his own solo shows his techniques have changed a lot. I would love to see an updated version of some of his habits and tendencies!

People might already said this, but the stop this train slap thing is more of a "slap with thumb, flick/hit another string with first finger" thing, so when he slaps he also hits a string at the same time.

Jefferson Multimedia Mayer, whom may have started self-taught, is definitely not solely self-taught. He went to Berklee and roomed with James Valentine whom is the current Maroon 5 guitarist.

Wow - great job demonstrating those 3 stylistic JM techniques. I was unaware of the prep-rake sound but once you demonstrated it I could spot it immediately. I'm impressed that you can discern those nuaces and then show how us the standard approach and how JM is a cut above in his execution and unique voicing of chords. Thanks for sharing amigo! Cheers.

Thanks for explaining a bit about the "Hendrix style" of wrapping your thumb around to the top strings to replace the barre chord shape. I always thought it was just a trick to mute the top strings so you don't accidentally strum them when you don't want to. I've even have had other guitarists claim it was a sloppy hack for sloppy strumming.

Great video, I got one note on the first technique you talk about: John flicks the strings when he slaps on stop this train, also on several other songs(Heart of life and Who says for example) It seems like just a simple extra technique but it takes quite some time to get the hang of.

JM actually plays note with his pointer finger when he slaps his thumb on bass string in half of his songs ..including 'Stop this train' which you played muting the note with each slap, thereby killing the feeling of the song. Who says, heart of life are some other songs where he plays note while slapping instead of completely muting all strings.
