How to change the gain on some popular overdrive and distortion pedals such as the MXR Distortion+, ProCo Rat, Ibanez Tubescreamer, and DIYGP Vulcan Drive as well as others. This applies to non-inverting op amp gain stages.
If you want the DIYGP Vulcan Drive PCB you can get it here:

I was following you relatively well until about 8:18 into the video. Then my brain melted down. Please do this kind of video for all areas of the pedal...Preamp Stage, Gain Stage, Power Stage, etc. I would so much appreciate understanding the process and how to read the schematic properly. Thanks.

A video covering when a buffer is needed and how to bias an op-amp as a buffer would be sweet! I know lots of pedals use mosfets and bjts for a buffer so maybe it's a bit of a big video. Either way thank you for the knowledge!!

So, do you like these ones where we effectively look at specific circuits in schematics or the earlier ones where we go through a whole pedal, tip to toe?
@DoDoxTM98

@@erikvincent5846 the best should be gettin' deep into a bunch of pedals. For example a compressor: we always analyze each part, from the input impedence to the make up gain stage. I'd like to see what's going on the dB meter, how changing ratio and threshold potentiometer the circuit modifies its properties to cut peak input voltages in different ways. Like waaay deep inside, I'm an electronics engineering student, I need specific information to understand how to think and design these specific application of analog electronics. Cheers from Italy

@@DoDoxTM98 alrighty. We have a simple PT2399 delay that we just released and I am going to do a video on that soon, explaining what components effect the sound. I've got a lot of pedals that I've already designed, so more stuff is coming soon. I already did two compressors. One is based around the old Orange Squeezer, and the other is an OTA LM13700 based compressor. I really do need to do a thorough analysis on these circuits. I'll admit, I am not "expert" as I am learning as I am making, but then again, learning by doing is usually the best method to make sure one understands. Anyways, the other challenge is the entertainment factor. I love Afrotechmods and enjoy his style, as well as Electroboom and, though not electronics related, Davie504 (Slap Like Now!). Making total tear downs do require a bit of effort to make entertaining.

These types of videos are fantastic! Thank you for putting this together. Can you please explain what C8 does in this circuit?
@erikvincent5846
@erikvincent5846 4 года назад
The small 10pF C8 capacitor across the feedback loop works as a low-pass filter (along with either R9 or R10, depending on switch position), avoiding instability and softening the corners of the harsh harmonics, mellowing the response. Assuming we are using R9, which is 220K of resistance, the math for the low-pass cut frequencies is 1/(2 x Pi x 220,000 x 0.000000000010) or about 72,343 Hz aka 72.3 kHz. So everything under that is passing and things over that is getting cut out. If R10 is selected, which is 2.2M of resistance, the math is 1 / (2 x Pi x 2,200,000 x 0.000000000010) or about 7234 Hz aka 7.234 kHz.

Yes, great videos, I like this! Quick question on 5:12 schematic, what would be the difference between having a 500k VR1 vs the 1M ? just cleaner at low gain or more gain ? will it be the same at half way with the 1M and full with the 500K? thanks!
@erikvincent5846
@erikvincent5846 2 года назад
Just a bit cleaner at low gain. The pot is being used as a variable resistor, which is in series with R1. So, you could just imagine R1 growing and shrinking in resistance, but can't get any lower than the hard-set 4.7K. Then you just look at it as a non-inverting op-amp gain selection. Gain = 1 + R9 (or R10, if selected) / "R1 + GAIN-POT"

Great stuff! Very informative. Quick question: do you need to power the TL072 with 9v and connect it to gnd via pins 4 and 8 un order for it to work as an amplifier? Or will it work as shown in the diagram with only pins 1, 2 and 3 connected? Thanks!
@erikvincent5846
@erikvincent5846 4 года назад
Yes, you will need to provide power to the op-amp to drive it. Now, you can do that a couple of ways. You can put 9V on pin 8 and GND on pin 4 and then bias the input signal at half (4.5V-ish). You can make a circuit that has positive rails and negative rails (like the Klon) and put +9V on pin 8, but have a power supply to generate -9V and place that on pin 4, and then bias the input to 0V. You just need to make sure the op-amp can handle the power you give it. But it does need that juice to do it's job.

Fantastic Vid thank you!! Just to get a quick clarification at the end when discussing Non-inverting vs Inverting OpAmps - Is a *low* input Z (for those who following along - ‘Z’ is the electrical symbol for “Impedance”) better for boosts than a typical high one for gain circuits? I’m sorry if this is a stupid question, Im pretty new to this in general and just wasn’t sure if you meant to say “non-inverting” (which would mean you were saying - high Z is *good* for OpAmp based Boost circuits) instead of “which makes *inverting* OpAmps so great for boost..” but you’re super badass at this and definitely know what you’re talking about (!!) so I’m gonna assume that you ‘spoke as you meant it’..! I think I wouldn’t have been as confused if I understood a lot more about input Z haha! I know it’s different to resistance (kind of? Like “AC wave” resistance [??]) and also similar, but I want to better understand *why* certain impedances are used/chosen by a circuit designer and what the effect/impact is on the sound/rest of circuit! Maybe this would be an awesome vid idea for the future!! Unless you guys have already made one (!!) in which case - would you mind pointing me (& the others reading this..!) in the right direction here? Would be much appreciated! Cheers!

@erikvincent5846 4 года назад
Camelia sinensis called it. 1M input Z is the desired spot, but I tend to see modern pedals go between 500K to around 2.2M. The only exceptions where low input Z comes up tend to either be old pedals (transistor based pedals like the Fuzz Face, Big Muff, Tone Benders, Range Masters, etc) or general Fuzz pedals that actually are just tweaks of old pedals. BJT circuits can have higher Z values, but it requires biasing it a bit differently than how folks typically do. See these examples for buffers that AMZ did a while ago: www.muzique.com/lab/buffers.htm

Why would you want a high impedance signal going into the op amp?
@erikvincent5846
@erikvincent5846 3 года назад
An op amp needs high input-impedance because it is a voltage-gain device. In order for voltage to drop across the input, the impedance has to be very high, as ohm's law states, V = I x R. It's also important to prevent the loading effect. If the impedance were small, the current draw would be high.

8:21 what makes an inverting op amp circuit, with a low input impedance, ideal for boosts? Most booster pedals I know have a high input impedance, except for the old range master...
@erikvincent5846

It makes it easier to fiddle with the gain resistors without altering the impedance at the time as they are on seperate pins.
