Erm I haven't changed my strings in 8 years Edit: it has now been 9 and to those asking how thats possible, i got a 3/4 sized guitar for my 6th birthday despite never expressing an interest in playing. Anyway, it eventually got too small for my liking so I got a new full sized one 2 years ago, an electric one last year

Solid advice. Maybe a good tip for people who tend to get sweaty fingers, or for playing in humid environments: Wipe the fretboard with a clean piece of cloth (even a t-shirt if nothing else is available) to prevent corrosion, extending string life quite a bit. Oh, and keep your guitar OUT of the case/bag whenever possible. It gets very humid in there.

Good vid Justin. I think regularly changing strings is just one of those below the awareness radar routine maintenance things many novitiates don't factor in as an ownership expense. My rule of thumb is "if in doubt, throw 'em out"! Sourcing at the right price in bulk in no frills packaging brings down the cost considerably. My experience living 150 metres from a Coral Sea vista (approx latitude 25S), in a region spanning a sub-tropical to temperate (just) 'transition' zone. Spring through Autumn here is hot and humid compounded by that humidity held in suspension in the air also being saline. However our home is air conditioned removing most of the humidity, coincidentally keeping temperatures below > 30 deg C extremes. Compounded by naturally sweaty fingers, *6 weeks maximum is about all the life I can expect out of a set of electric D'Addario EXL strings* no matter how religiously I wipe them over or apply Dunlop 65 lube. By then, their rusty roughness can be felt when fretting the G,B & E strings. Tone Finger Ease doesn't really render it any more playable. Tone is gone, fingering is slowed and callus' shred. Sliding is just painful. Feels like driving a car on misaligned, bald tyres with damaged casings. I leave my guitars out in a rack because I play them every day. Here, in air conditioning, pretty certain long term storage in my sealed hard case would extend string life, although that's rendered moot compromised by playing them every day. I didn't buy them for a decorator items. Standing out in the rack or on a stand, the saline moisture held in suspension in the air coalesces with dust on the strings super-accelerating the occurrence of rust. So for me here, regularly replacing strings monthly is pretty much de rigueur, and a budget prerequisite.

Not only are you a most excellent guitarist, you are also an excellent teacher... Many people who have in depth knowledge of a subject often think think they can teach/educate, as they tend to think it is just a matter of explaining it - but it (Teaching) is far more involved than that and requires all kinds of tools and abilities to be able to successfully impart what they know. Teaching is a skill in and of itself...I know because I teach. (Not Guitar or music btw)...I started playing guitar late in life and I have learnt a great deal about all aspects of the guitar and guitar playing from you Justin. So "Thank-You"...as the Vulcan Musician once said 'May You Play Long and Prosper'.

Maya Finley With dry clothe first, just to make the strings dry; then apply string oils, wipe the strings dry again. Repeat this act twice every time you finish playing and I guarantee you that even uncoated strings can have one-month lifespan. You’re welcome. Btw the lifespan of strings actually depends on the core wire, not the surface. Basically you have to change strings every month.

@glenben92
@glenben92 9 лет назад
You should be wiping that black grime off your strings at every opportunity. It'll improve the live of your frets and strings and feel better. I can't recommend Elixir coated strings enough. Tried every string out there working in guitar shops, I use elixir on everything, save a fortune, change strings WAAAAY less and the guitar feels better or "fresh" for longer because of it. I have quite acidic sweat, but I get literally 20-30x longer from elixirs.

Rob Atkinson The nanoweb-coating does actually last not very long. I peel it off with my plek and it looks like a unshaved poodle. And I have small plastik-flakes on the PUs. Does not happen with polywebs. And they last much longer than the nanos.

also a tip, to test for gunk under the string, is to take like a cloth or a cotton swab and just run it under the string. Sometimes there'll be huge build up under there so that's an effective way to see if it's time for a string change.
@dr150
@dr150 6 лет назад
Justin: I did the fingernail test and sure enough had gunk underneath. The question is WHY the top of the string looks good and shiny, but the bottom black gunk up?....
@2bingtim
@2bingtim Год назад
Because the top half of the string is picked & rubbed by your fingers & finger nails, effectively scrubbing them. Alot of the gunk is what's under your fingernails. Where the string is left untouched, the underside, the gunk builds up.

ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU PLAY!! Coated string fray badly and cause buzzing on the frets once they were down after 15 hours of play especially if you have really tight action on the guitar.
@asdf9890

I like the grit test on the bottom of the strings. I usually feel the bottom of the wound strings and if they have deep divots from the frets, I know it's time to change them.

Justin I love your vids but you do something I just don't understand..I haven`t broken a string in 30 years and I play at least 2 hours a day 7 days a week..I run into players all the time who do it...I don`t know what it is I do that's different but I swear it has to do something with mindset I guess although I use heavy strings with high action and I play near the bridge they way I was taught in school..I think its more psychological to tell you the truth..I`m not being critical..all I`m saying is my strings don`t break..I don`t really even change them much unless I`m playing out a lot..one quick question...are you in Australia? I`d like to go there..thanks

What do you use to clean an acoustic guitar other than a duster? As i'm new and have not been able to get a case as yet, my guitar is starting to accumulate some dust. I generally just dust it off with a regular cloth. Could the dust affect my strings? I'm planning on getting my case asap though. Sorry for the basic question just wondered if there were any other tips! :) ALSO- Do you recommend to buy the strings at the time of when one needs them, or to buy bulk and store them wherever it's the most handy? I actually had a ton of corrosion from playing uncoated strings, like my strings would be dead and rusted after two days sometimes, so I just went to coated strings. Is it normal to have such a huge amount of corrosion on my strings so that they are rusted and dead after two days?

Surely you should clean your strings after playing to prevent all that dirt build up? Like those gizmos that you put under your strings which is like a cloth pad on a plastic credit card sized contraption, then you fold the top half over which sandwiches the strings so you can slide it up and down the length of the strings. They surely must prevent all that gunk and ultimately prolong the life of your strings. I'd say that using 1 of those every time you finish playing would be good practice, and I've seen them for sale for under a tenner and that must pay for itself over time and save you money by not having to replace your strings because it's that gunk and sweat that corrodes your strings if you leave it on when you finish playing....I mean some sets of strings can cost over £10 so I'd say it'd be a good investment.

Is it possible that my guitar buzzes a lot because of the strings being more than a year old? Or is it the guitar action?
@Walamonga1313
@Walamonga1313 8 лет назад
Yes it is possible. Mine did too so I changed them and my guitar is silky smooth again.

ive got 6 month old strings, im new to this so im thinking i have not really stressed these strings out like a seasoned player would of. im getting a problem now, the low e string reads as E and B if i turn it slightly i get E reading its unstable the slightest knock could have it reading as B again its super sensitive to tune it, ive got new strings but i dont have the confidence to change them around. its a £700 stratocaster, ill be devastated if i get it wrong.

I feel like my strings on my acoustic is old because when I strum, it vibrates and wiggles a lot. does that mean is it old? also I experience fret buzz within the higher frets. but I feel like it might be cuz the action on my guitar is low

Is it not bad for all that tension in the neck and then going changing all the strings at the same time ?
@froggore52

No, it's not going to hurt anything.

D'Addario or Ernie Ball. I personally use Ernie Ball strings on my electric.

So my takeaway is that if my guitar pick is turning black at the tip from playing I should probably change my strings?

In that case, you even should have changed it a little earlier. Check some other lessons about maintenance here: www.justinguitar.com/modules/guitar-maintenance-1 | LievenDV | JustinGuitar Official Guide

I did the finger nail test on mine and boy was there tonnes of dirt....my strings sounded terrible. I think I'll change them, coz I would play other guitars and the tones on those sounded 100x better than mine

I have to clean my strings every day. If not there is pretty much of green dirt underneath.

I'm beginner, my guitar is super cheap, old and string "A" just broke, should I replace only 1 string, or I should replace them all? Isn't changing all strings at ones is a tip for prof players?
@justinguitar
@justinguitar 6 лет назад
nah, I'd replace them all - otherwise one will sound brighter. Unless spending the extra is tricky - in which case just change the one!

So 10 years is a bit too long eh? Lol, I only play for my own pleasure & enjoy the mellow(flat is it?) sound of my old strings.-One reason I hate changing them as new ones sound too "tinney"(Bright is it?). I occasionally clean the fret board. I must be the skunkiest guitarist. My son used to sometimes buy me a set after visiting as it wound him up. He's a proper guitarist. I'm not worthy of the name.

When do know when the frets are dying or going bad
@SmevMev
@SmevMev 9 лет назад
+Pj Demorest If you see flat spots or dents where the strings have worn into the top of the fret, they will need re-crowning. If the any frets are loose or they're pulling away from the fingerboard, you'll need to take your guitar to a luthier and get it fixed. Also, if you hold the guitar up to your face, look down the fretboard and the frets aren't all at the same height above the fingerboard, they'll need levelling. If in doubt, it's best to take your guitar to a guitar shop or luthier and have it checked.

I always wash my hands before playing my guitar & the strings last a lot longer & you generally don't get gunk on them;
