I'd actually consider it now! I'm thinking about just going straight over a poly finish but I don't have the fortitude! thank you for showing this, I think the final product looks great!

Tech tip: you can make an easy "frying pan" handle to hold the bolt-on style guitar body as you do the finishing work. Basically a piece of wood that fits where the neck is. You can also add an eye bolt on the far end of the handle, so you can hang it to dry. Also, always start with the hard to reach areas first (inside the cutaways). Those are the areas you can't avoid and area easier to reach if you don't apply finish to the top and/or back first.

Looks like a great solution for those of us who live in apartments and don’t have real workspaces. My dining table is my workbench, lol. Anyway, I wonder if they’ll come up with a system to help people mix the colors - seems like it would help to have an app where you can take or import a photo to select a color, and then the app tells you which color finishes to buy and how much to mix . . . and if you make a mistake of pouring too much, using the camera to detect the correct shade so the app can suggest how much of each color to add to get back on track for the desired end result. Most people don’t have advanced color mixing skills, so it would really help make it fully idiot proof! Have you ever tried using dyes? Would be cool to get your take on how dyes compare to this sort of finish - future video suggestion! 😬😉
@stevecassidyguitar
@stevecassidyguitar Месяц назад
Totally! That's exactly the ideal scenario for using this stuff 👍 That's a fantastic idea re mixing the colours via an app! Tried it many years ago and it was a disaster, but that was with aerosols which went well until i applied the clear gloss laquer and it reacted with the colour coat. i was in tears, they did refund my money. So i took the cowards way out and asked my local car body shop to refinish it. Needless to say the finish was like glass and no blotchy patches. Not cheap, but perfection never is. Good luck with this one Steve.
@stevecassidyguitar
@stevecassidyguitar Месяц назад
Thank ya Barbara! 😀👍 That must have hurt, especially if you were happy with the colour pre-laquer 😬 I've heard of people taking guitars to car body shops for refinishing. I feel like I'd need to know someone who works there first as I doubt it's a service they normally offer. Did you just walk in off the street and ask someone? Would be very cool to have that done, then there's a whole world of auto coplours and metallics etc to explore 😀

@@stevecassidyguitar I knew them as a customer, they had repaired several of my cars over the years when they suffered the dings and scrapes that happen in supermarket car parks. What i didn't know was that the owner was also a guitar collector until i showed them the mess i was in, so i struck lucky. They did say that it would be done between other jobs when the spray booth was available. i offered to remove my mess but they said no, they had all the gear to remove the laquer and be able to match the colour that i wanted. They also refinished my Fender Bonnie Raitt signature Strat that Fender made a mess of. It came back exactly as per her original was with a Blue Burst fade finish, i still have that guitar it has a special thin neck that cost me a fortune from Musikraft.

@ 5:49 I know it is something that is in the past now but if you try again in the future it may be (trying not to tread on eggshells here) to have a lump of wood with a similar tone to the gee-tar. Apply a wipe from each bottle Let it dry Compare bottle shade with dried shade - Is there a difference? Let than influence your decisions going forward - and as an afterthought - maybe these paints can be applied on to of existing colors anyway? If so - you can design your own artwork bro!
@stevecassidyguitar
@stevecassidyguitar Месяц назад
Thank you mate! Solid advice and much appreciated 🙏 My inital thoughts were to apply a coat of red, then a coat of blue, and re-assess and repeat with each coat. But Bolt said the best way to do it is to mix it first as the "wet" colour in the bottle is true to the dry solid colour - and they were pretty spot on with that. I could still try it the other way though - I have enough paint left. That's also an excuse to buy another guitar body... then a neck... then have another partscaster party! 😂

No sweat. We use tiny apparatus as part of our development and have been experimenting and can tell you that the red goes a long way! The problem with mixing paints is that they're kind of additive and things tend towards dark brown the more you mix. You want to start out with the most vibrant paints possible, generally. I'm very interested in this though, as I have an Ibanez Mikro base in walnut that's completely unsealed and the paint(or stain rather?) chips too much for my liking(dings should feel earned!), if they have a similar colour i might rub some in and see what happens :)
@stevecassidyguitar
@stevecassidyguitar Месяц назад
This stuff doesn't have that rock hard shell finish, it still feels like it could ding easily. I think that's a part of the pitch thier going for is that it might age/wear quicker a bit like nitro. Great video Steve. I have an old 1996 Epi SG in the back of my guitar cupboard that I've not played for years and always fancied re-finishing and modding it. I got it from a local guitar shop that always had loads of Epis but they were always much cheaper than in any of the other shops. I think it cost £199 when the normal price was £299 and also got a Sheraton for £299 than the £399 everywhere else. I think they were B stock as the SG had some laquer cracking round the neck joint and a brush bristle trapped under the laquer on the top that's always bugged me. Or should I just relic it ? 🤣🤣🤣

In theory kit guitars sound like a great idea but in practice they're definitely not. For the price you pay for a decent kit you can buy a new guitar with a guarantee. Selling a kit guitar is a no-brainer because only someone without a brain will buy it from you. Your project makes much more sense. Either buy a used guitar and refinish it yourself or refinish one of your existing guitars. Rory Gallagher's Strat could do with a little cosmetic work, if anyone has a little loose change to bid on it. Regarding the avoidance of bad smells in your family environment either change your diet or take a lot of long walks in the countryside. Putting on lots of coats is a good idea but I got caught red-handed in the Oxfam shop resulting in a ban from the premises and a lot of public embarassment. Enough stupidity. I don't particularly like the colour (your could have added a bit of glitter Gary) but it's good to see an alternative method of finishing a guitar.

Ha!
