The guitar tones section is awesome. Good decision to keep one element constant (mics). At that level, any of those preamps will definitely work, maybe just mic positioning to tailor the sound. For the first 2 amps, the CAPI regular is perfect (if you would only get API 512c). One thing for sure is for the AC30, the BAE and TG are solid. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe man!
Red dot CAPI sounds incredible. Almost has that Queen sound to it. TG sounds great also. Brent Avril always an awesome neutral pre. How much did those CAPI pres cost you to make?
Apologies if I missed it, what impedance setting was the 1073 on? Love the TG here on all of them. CAPI is great too. BAE feels off to me (from what I'd expect), just wondering if its an impedance thing?
Bae is set to 300. Actually I tested some more this morning. The TG was set to 1200 and when I set it to 300 it was even better. The 300/1200 switch isn’t nearly as dramatic sounding as the TG. I’m going to upload a new video today of the differences
@@jameslugo I WAY prefer 1200 on almost everything. 300 sounds choked to me, 1200 more hifi and dynamic. FWIW impedance of the preamp should be set 5-10x higher than the output impedance of the mic for the mic to function correctly, so 1200Ohms is optimal for most mics (300 can be cool for more creative uses but it’ll load dynamics and ribbons badly). I have a feeling here that the TG sounding better than the 1073 is largely because the mic isn’t functioning correctly when it’s set to 300 ohms. At 1200 they’ll sound more alike. Perhaps do a shootout of both and see what you like (it’ll affect different mics differently).
@@jameslugo I always thought I did too, but when I tested for myself I found the exact opposite. And every time since, I’ve never found a situation where I preferred the 300 ohms setting. I think once I can hear the sound of the mic not functioning correctly, it’s really hard to unhear - there’s a kind of “stiffness” to the sound where it sounds like the mic is struggling to move freely. Funnily enough a friend of mine did a huge preamp and mic comparison yesterday evening and included AMS 1073 and Heritage 73JR on both 1200 and 300 ohms. There was also a Brent Averil 312 and Chandler Germanium (which I believe is 200 Ohms). It was just on high gain guitars but it reinforced what i’d found in my own tests (with a 1073, TG2, ISA and UA unison pre’s). I think it’s really interesting because the tonal differences are more to do with how the mic is reacting than the preamp’s tone. If you like, I can speak with him and share his Pro Tools session with you .
Yeah I kind of feel the same way. I worked on dialing in my BAE after this video, I was kind of underwhelmed by it's performance. But that being said I still like it best on vocals.
@@jameslugo Man you definitely have me shopping the TG stuff. Shared this vid out on some forums. I just got my first 500 series chassis and pre's. I can see this being a hell of a rabbit hole! LOL!
Everything 500 series is slightly less intense than 19" version, Avedis told me it's the power rails on the 500 racks, not as powerful as separate supply. But the different can be marginal. For 500 I thing TGs are better than Neve
