I have the feeling this is still under the radar and a lot of guitar players don't really think of it. I'm talking about the core wire of the wound strings. Round core is old school, hex core is more modern. But what does that even mean for us guitar players? What is the difference? I was pretty surprised to see which one I liked more...
The three strings I was using (Thomann affiliate links):

You didn’t mention that with round core strings you have to take care to bend the wound strings before you cut them because they will unwind on you! And at that point they will sound dead, that’s why hex core really became popular, you don’t have to worry about this, I love round core strings for Strats!

Absolutely. I found DR Pure Blues many, many years ago, and seriously nothing else came close. They feel nicer, they sound good, they just last and last and last and don't seem to go dull over time like other strings, and they break much more infrequently. Prior to DR strings I'd break a lot more strings, sometimes even break one when putting it on, but if I break a DR string it's generally a good sign that they've been on the guitar a very, very long time and with pretty much any other brand I'd have probably gone through at least 3-4 sets if not more by that stage. Love them. But they don't market well and lots of shops don't carry them, so they seem to be a lot less well known and used and played compared to so many other brand strings.

Great video, very good examples of the differences between round and hex core strings. I did the same for myself about 1 year ago, noticed that I had to change my touch on the strings as well. I've gone mostly round wound strings from DR for the sound and the much lighter touch needed to play much easier on the hands! Again great video...

Hi Kris - very interesting. For me its one of the most important things in playing which strings I´m using. In the early 80s of the last century (yes - I´m old!) my favourite strings were Earnie Ball´s 009 and later 010s on a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. I played hard rock rhythm guitar most of the time. After a long break I began playing again nearly 10 years ago now. Now the Blues is my favourite music and very fast I noticed that the Earnie Ball Strings are way to hard for my actual playing style! On my Les Pauls, the 335 and even my Strat I´m very happy now with 010 Gibson Brite Wires! They working perfect with all guitars (to be honest there are some Epiphones, too) and with my fingers. Very smooth and great for bendings. I always take care to have enough sets in spare! Looking forward to the next interesting videos! Greetings from Germany!

I’ve used GHS Boomers forever. I never could put my finger on why I liked them so much more than other strings I would try. Then I found out they used round core wire instead of hex core. That must be the reason why. I play classic rock and even some of the heavier hard rock. And even for the harder rock side of things, they still just seem to sound better and feel better in my opinion.

I never knew about round vs hex core until I saw this video. But for the longest time, I’ve been a big fan of DR strings. I use a hybrid Tite-fit 10-50 set on my Epiphone Les Paul Muse because I like the way the bass string growl at crunch and higher-gain settings. For my other guitars, I use DR Pure Blues 10-46; I like their smooth, warm tone. I also love how these strings can last ofr at least 2-3 months before they begin to sound dull. In the long run, they are great value for money.

Hey Kris, In your video, the TiteFit sound brighter, the Blues softer and the EB… well like EB 🤣 Through the years, I have experienced TONS of different strings: from the vintage “Nashville” Fenders (the same Jimi Hendrix used) to modern alloy strings. I’ve ended up with 3 sets: GHS Gilmour 10-48 I use on all my Strats EB 10-48 on Teles except for one where I use 10-48 Pyramid round cores and aThinline where I use Duesenberg 10-50, as on a PRS DGT (I don’t dig the feel of 11’s) On all others I use either standard 10-46 Hexcore (10-48 for some that need a bit more oomph on the wound strings). Yeah: makes a lot of different sets that make me keep a chart of gauges and dates for refresh… Cheers mate !

After a lot of experimenting I landed on D'Addario XL Half-Rounds. I found them to be a middle ground of a more vintage nickel wound and a more modern string. They also have the benefit of a bit less string noise and I don’t have a problem bending them although I am sure to people playing slinky’s this is noticeably more stiff.
@mikecorey8370

A Slinky guy here. But I never really thought about it. I've used them all and go with Slinkys because of the feel on the surface. I've used Elixers on my Les Paul and PRS and always come back to Slinkys. I do a lot of gending on my Strat and Tele, and because of arthritis in my wrists, I'm going to go with round cores to see if that helps. Good demo. Thanks.
@Paul_Lenard_Ewing
@Paul_Lenard_Ewing Год назад
The explanation for HEX core strings missed an important benefit. When you wind the wire around a round string it has nothing to grip to and those winds can literally slip. Once they do you have gaps in the string and anywhere you have a gap the note under it can be put out of tune and you also have a space for oxidation to get to the core. The main reason strings die is because they oxidize...or in other words the go rusty. Rust creates holes. Tiny holes in a string are the same as gaps in windings. The note under them may be out of tune. High tech coatings stop the oxidation/rust. In spite of manufactures claims you get back to physics again. You can not put a blanket of anything over metal without dampening the metal. There is a myth that strings die of fatigue. They do not because they are barely stretched on an in tune guitar.The biggest problem is oxidation. So which ones should you get??? There is only one single rule for tone with Rock & Roll. If it sounds good. It is good. Choose accordingly, LOL. The only really seriously big improvement with strings is the marketing. Every year the Bullsh@t improves!!! Some of the best sounding recordings every made were done decades ago when the players had strings that because the old winders and wire pullers could not even make a string that was intonated over every note. In short every inch of the string was a different gauge. Me, I use good ol' Dean Markley nickel steel strings ...unchanged for decades. 99% of all luthiers use them because of their consistency. Yes that is what comes on a $6000.00 handmade guitar. You don't ever get a dead string out of the pack. $5 a pack.

I love both the hex core & the round core wire strings. I even put the round core strings on a bright sounding pickups chuggy guitar & the hex core strings on the other warmer sounding guitar. I do notice that the hex core strings corrodes considerably earlier than the round core. I have this thought that strings manufacturers purposely invented hex core strings since by design it corrodes easier. In doing so, less corrosion resistant strings = profits(?). Then all they have to do was to market the differences between the two types cores. Just a thought.
@chriskettlewell801

Would not be surprised. He commented that the main reason for companies going to hex strings was reducing cost of manufacture, so it's a profit thing. So having the side effect of people needing to change strings more often and thus buy more strings would also be a happy side-effect of that change for those same companies.

Pure nickel won't corrode as bad as nickel coated steel, the frets quickly eat through the nickel coating at the contact point, then the steel starts wearing down the fret and the string loses its tone, pure nickel round core strings seem to last longer, especially if its good quality steel like Pyramid and Stringjoy use. They are twice as much but last 3-4 times longer it seems.?

Standard Boomers are round core, but they bump up the core size very slightly to compensate so that the perceived tension is equal to the same size hex-cores. Also Boomers now come in small-core and large-core.

Hey Kris, Another really interesting video - well done, Sir! Whst I found most interesting was the thought about string standards when all the "classic amps" were built. In my understanding they should sound the most, well, genuine way with roundwounds, simply that's the strings those amps were designed for. Or is my inner logic taking a wrong turn here?
@KrisBarocsi
@KrisBarocsi Год назад
Roundwounds, yes indeed. I was only talking about the core wire being round instead of hexagonal. The wrap wire of round core strings are round (=roundwounds), same as on modern hex core strings. So I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same thing. :)

Hi Kris. The round core may be the reason Blackmore leaves the strings uncut and coils the excess length into a kind of pig tail shape sticking over the headstock. This looks very cool as well. Do you know if this would make sense and if it is possible to do with vintage style tuners?

My current set of EB Power Slinky are rocking on 1 year plus at the moment, I don't play every day, but I've had strings last way shorter than that. They are my current longest lasting set of strings and still sound good to me. My takeaway from this video, I prefer the sound from the hex core strings.

Hex-core NYXL D'Addario for me, because of their resistance, reliability and consistency in tone. It makes me feel more confident and spend less time maintining all my too many guitars. They are not coated but seems not suffering from any oxydation, not sure how it works but it works definitely well. Probably the materials... They claimed they are made of "high carbon steel"...

I wouldn't say the Pure Blues are louder but they sound more balanced to me. If you want to rock some chainsaw distortion I'd probably stick to hex core nickel plated steel. A bit more attack (good for high gain) and still not a one trick pony. So you can use them for clean, low gain and high gain. Cheers!

I must be unlucky with DR. I just installed DR Jeff Healey 10-56 and 6th and 4th are dead, completely doa 🤔 Second pack with Dr's were these K3 Coated strings and 6th didn't have sustain at all. It's hard to find the exact word for dead string except "plonk" or "dong/dof" 😅 Other brand i always have tough luck is Dunlop & Dean Markley, Dean Markley having mostly corroded with kinks and twists while Dunlop Wounds being dead. If the next pack of DR's are dead, im out for good. Those strings are roughly 10€ vs so many other OK brands. There must be good quality DR strings that's obvious because folks talk good about them and Alexi Laiho played them. So far it's even safer to put Harley Benton Value Strings for a week than taking a risk with DR's. (I have 27 guitars, yeah i know alot haha, the prob isn't with the guitars or the way i install em)
@KrisBarocsi
@KrisBarocsi Год назад
Hey, if it’s always the wound strings, it might be the installation method. Round core strings are tricky and shouldn’t be cut without bending them first. Check out this video, might be useful: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GLE_spXuQsc.html

@KrisBarocsi
@KrisBarocsi Год назад
@@JonsterTheBondster That 90 degree angle sounds already pretty good so it really shouldn’t be the installation.
