Man, I went down a Father John Misty hole for about 4 or 5 years, where nothing else got me as excited. He's just the full package, not something you see often.
Oh man, I am feeling this comment. I haven't been able to find anything else that stands up to FJM since I started listening to his music. Please let me know how you eventually broke the spell!
Everyone needs more Father John Misty in their life. I was fortunate to be introduced to him when he released his 1st FJM album - Fear Fun - and I've been following him ever since. My single most favorite live performance of a song is Father John Mist playing "Bored in the USA" on Letterman. His exaggerated, sarcastic and deliberate choreography fit perfectly with the sarcasm and misanthropic tone of the lyrics. It's one of the most perfect and perfectly-executed live performances I've ever seen. If you like the way he moves and his performance in this video, definitely check out "Bored in the USA" live on Letterman.
He played Only son of a ladiesman on letterman once too, and his performance was great. Very flamboyant, yet subdued and perfect at the same time for the song.
Thanks for this! Often people say Father John Misty songs are simple, but it's so deceptive! They can be so complex! Also really enjoy seeing you watch this for the first time and really GET IT. ❤
Thank you so much for reviewing my song Michael! SOOO glad you dig it. Man this whole concert is well worth your time! There's a whole rabbit hole to dive into with Father John Misty!! Also its Daniel Lee lol. Not Les😂
You might not know, but he was the drummer for Fleet Foxes. His solo stuff was simple and dark, but as Father John Misty he really went for that Fear and Loathing in Las Vega vibe.
I always wondered what role he played in Fleet Foxes. I never listened to them much but I always tried to pick his voice out. Now I know why I couldn’t lol
I saw him open for Rocky Votolato and Damien Jurado in 2006. This was back when he performed as J Tillman. He opened the show and blew my mind then ad-libbed drums for Votolato. Jurado closed the night out. Such a great show. To top it all off it was $7 to get in the door and there were only about 150 people in attendance.
I absolutely love FJM. I was glad that he made his way to the microphone where he belongs. I've listened to quite a bit of his J. Tillman stuff, but it just feels like it's missing the satirical wit and dark comedic charm of FJM. He's mentioned in interviews that he found his 1st person narrative voice he uses to write his FJM songs while writing a novel. He also claims he had an epiphany one night while taking LSD. Maybe it was a mix of both. I'm just glad he figured out the formula.
Welcome to the FJM fan club! Hes one of the BEST rock /folk/pop artists from USA in the last 20 years easy! Lyrics very clevers and music with full of details of a great song writer.
Love Josh Tillman/Father John Misty. Got to see him live several years ago. Incredible show! So much wonderful, unique music with his wonderfully bent sense of humor. Check out Ballad of a Dying Man. One of my favorites.
Just need to watch the whole concert. You will not regret it. Captivating. Magical. All those words. I’ve been in a worm hole for months where nothing else is good enough.
Man. The Honeybear album is genius. I saw him on that tour and they were incredible. Check out the album, and definitely, When You're Smiling and Astride Me.
Thank you so much for reviewing this amazing live performance. I’ve only seen him live a half dozen times. That’s not near enough for me. He has SO many other songs you must, must, must, hear. 😳😳😳😳
Love your channel and that you take these requests. Love Father John Misty's sound and style. Although haven't heard his more recent stuff, and actually haven't seen his live stuff. Really good!
so cool to see you react to some Father John Misty, I Love You Honeybear got some really powerful tunes, always bringing a complex, melodic and crisp sound but with show stealing performances from John
I haven't list to Father John Misty in a hot minute. Great quirky artist! I've got a few of his CD's but I think it's time to do a Spotify deep dive and see what else I can find. Cheers!
Absolutely love this channel!!! As a non musician, I still feel your reactions. Your ATW and Manchester Orchestra reacts were dope. Try out Lord Huron “Your Other Life/ Ton Autre Vie videos. Cool AF. I would love for you to go back and rewatch ATW Blood and Sand live in Belgium. This version has the keys and they aren’t to be missed! Keep up the great work.
You also need to get into "Butch Bastard" aka Ian Murray. Start with "Little Black Shoes", "Elegy For The Baby Boomer" and "Las Vegas Salvation"..Ian is a lyrical and musical genius like Misty is
Hey Michael-- I just want to thank you for this video and your channel in general! While my guitar skills will always be stuck at "mediocre" (I don't practice!), what I really appreciate is your enthusiasm for music and your willingness to listen to all different genres of music with an open mind. Ever since you put this video out, I have been listening to Father John Misty almost exclusively, and I never would have checked him out without your video. And this isn't the first time you have gotten me into a new artist, either. You even got me to listen to a genre I had sworn off (country)! So thanks for the great content. I really enjoy it!
Hey Michael! Love you real time breakdowns. Please check out Glass Beams in the future. If you haven’t already heard them, I think you’re going to dig it. Cheers from Michigan
with you being a guitar teacher and all, I'd love to see your take on the song "Where did all the guitars go" by McFly. It came out a few months ago in the UK. Your take not just on the musicality of the song, but the subject matter as well.
Saw him in Atlanta last year……he’s fucking mesmerizing….incredible performer, the production was so stylized I thought I was at a broadway performance. You definitely need some more Father John Misty in your live. He’s dark, he’s smart and he’s melodic. I loved seeing your reaction to his music because it reminded me of mine.
If you're looking for more music that's in dialogue with Americana from an art-rock perspective with an emphasis on strong poetry, Big Thief certainly fit the bill: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T0jzqIwrhIs.html
