Just a guy in his 40 with tears in his eyes, watching another guy with tears in his eyes watch ANOTHER guy absolutely crush this song. Wife Walks In: “What are you watching? Me: NOTHING! Get out of here! Michael and I are watching Noah together!
Been listening to Noah for years. I say this with all seriousness, I believe he is one of the best songwriters of our generation. Dude has me crying through every album. Check out his official live video of his song Haunted House. That song blows me away. Its raw emotion and authenticity are palpable. Awe-some.
I discovered Noah in February and have been completely obsessed with his music ever since. He is all I have been listening to since then. Once every ten years or so, one of those life-defining favorite artists comes along and absolutely changes my world - Noah is the latest for me. Just absolutely incredible.
As I watch this, I'm remembering the night I was watching SNL in 1994 while I was in college and Counting Crows played this song and it absolutely blew my mind. Changed my world right on the spot. I will never forget that moment or that feeling. When you discover a new artist that change your world forever. There are before and after moments of hearing a song that changes your DNA, that performance of theirs on SNL playing Round Here was that moment for me. Just unforgettable.
Absolutely feel the same way. Noah is one of the few artists I can listen to anytime, anywhere and never get tired of him. He has brought so much quality music and still continues to deliver.
I have been listening to Noah for years now and there is no artist that comes close that makes me feel the emotions that i do when i listen to him, once i figured out he grew up where im from, i knew he had some stories to tell, love him and his music to death and cant wait to see him live one day!
I always understood the lyrics. the line "she knows she more than a little misunderstood" hit me like a ton of bricks when this came out, but in my middle age, a lot of songs have come back to me with renewed understanding. Great cover, great video.❤
So stoked to finally see Noah on here. The dude is an absolutely stellar songwriter and performer. His music oozes emotion, so much so that you can see the emotional rollercoaster he goes through when he plays his music live. It would be awesome to see you check out some of his original material.
I’ve heard this song hundreds of times and never fully paid attention to the lyrics. Phenomenal song. Phenomenal performance. Going to immediately listen to more of Noah. Keep doing what you do, Michael.
First heard of Noah from his album Ledges and the title track hits me the way Round Here hit Noah. He, His sister and Phoebe Bridgers do an amazing piano double cover of her Phoebe’s song Killer and his song The Sound that is earth and soul shaking. Noah is incredibly versatile in the styles and music he performs.
His delivery is passionate. He feels the song and he's moved by the lyrics (and they are great lyrics). But also the musical arrangement adds depth and colour - the heavy reverb/ delay on the guitar brings out those soaring notes. This is a great cover perfectly delivered.
I never clicked so quickly, so glad you picked this one. I've followed Noah for years and have enjoyed his journey. I finally got to see him play live a couple of years ago in an old church in Bristol, England, and it was simply phenomenal. I flew from Ireland just for the gig and it was something I won't forget.
I’ve heard this song 1000s of times and it’s one of my most favorite - and I never thought I would say it, but Noah, with his raw energy and authenticity, lifted this to a whole new level. Michael, your reviews and insight of your personal experiences are so valuable, thanks for that!
I'm 50ish & I was TORN UP from this. I just came across your page & parked here. Thank you so much for posting this. Thank you for taking the time to post this type of stuff. Fan for life...
Michael you have turned me on to so many of those artists who live and thrive doing their own thing their way. They may not be popular as in mainstream, but that is fine by me, because when they sing those songs that are so personal and stab your heart and speak out loud and relate about all the demons we carry in our souls in a way no video can ever capture. What ever Noah's demons may be, he confronts them head on Thanks for what you do for the Travis Meadows and Noah Gundersons. Keep posting and I will keep watching. I appreciate you brother. 🙏
When they 1st came out in Top 40 I wasn't yet digging on what was replacing what we called rock n roll. As my life fell to pieces I began paying more attention to lyrical value rather than guitar, percussion, time signature, tempo, and such. Counting Crowes, particularly this song helped understand where, when, and how healing begins. After all these years, the struggle continues as embarrassing as it is but this 1 is still on my play list. This guy has done a perfect and well honored cover of a song that matters to every one of us despite our individual plight.
Been watching you for quite a while little Brother. You're a hell of a guitar player. But I've never commented on one of your vids. I value your humbleness. Makes me appreciate you even more. Life's experiences take us all in different places. You did this video justice. Props to you and the anchors that only you know how to carry brother. Much Love
Hell yeah. So glad you found this one. And yeah, I've been listening to this song for 30 years without actually hearing it. You always drop something on us to remind us what the chase is about. Be well brother and keep doing what you're doing. I appreciate you more than you know. 🙏
The song character Maria clearly means something to Noah. And 'she' very clearly meant something to Adam Duritz, because the character was recurring on the album 'August and Everything After' and elsewhere in his impressive catalog of songs. And it really doesn't matter if Maria is a 'real' person. Clearly she's real to Noah. Great reaction to a great performance of a great song by a great lyricist.
This is the video that got me into Noah. I am glad I saw that video. He is an *amazing* songwriter and I hope he gets all the success he wants. He just moved to Nashville, and I am rooting for him. Thanks for posting this.
So glad this popped up on my feed. Have loved noah since he did a few sons of anarchy soundtrack songs and i got to see him live and meet him at a tiny like 300 person show. But id never heard him do this cover. Powerful performance.
One of the best covers ever - the best Counting Crows cover I've heard. Noah is a true trailblazer. Trapeze Swinger cover by Gregory Alan Isakov is one I wholeheartedly recommend too
I'm lucky #250 on the thumbs up for this video :D I just wanted to say Mike, you're just as much a therapist as you are an excellent musician and teacher. I really enjoy watching your reactions, but even more I'm pleased with your ability to make a person feel much less alone through your sincerity/honesty in a simple video. I'm certain you're making an important positive difference in your viewer's lives and I hope you keep it up as long as you can. If you're ever in eastern NC we should jam! I could learn a lot from you as a guitar player, but also as a human. Thanks for what you do.
I have had this cover on repeat for a long time now, and to see you talk about it made me so happy! This has always been my favorite CC song and he absolutely nailed it.
Amazing find!! I am so blessed to be part of your community Michael! Counting crows fan since the 90´s and never heard of Noah Gundersen. What a Cover, So much energy flowing through the air. Keep doing what you love, you made my day!
Wow. I was not expecting to like this, and I'm here with tears in my eyes. One of my favorite songs, which became kinda overplayed on the radio. I got to hear it for the first time again. Incredible.
I’ve seen so many of your videos and found so many new artists through them. You seem like such a genuine dude and I’d love to share stories over some beers; cheers and keep up the good work!
It's a great cover by Noah, and your commentary is always so profound. The raw emotion in your own eyes as you experience something like this, and I'm here for that as well as the great music.
I've been watching your videos for two years now. Just awesome content! I've learned so many things in terms of music and the meaning of lyrics. I've been a guitar player for 30 years now. Cheers, Chris
Love everything you do, Michael - but WOW! Thank you for putting this out there... and reminding me to stop and smell the roses. What a blessing - I'm better for having heard this, today.
This is what music is all about. Your words really helped me today Michael, thank you. My best friend decided to end his life a year ago and I've been struggling since.
I found this randomly a couple months ago. I liked CC back when they came out and always thought August and Everything After was always a bit slept on, but over the years I hadn't listened to it much. I watched this the first time speechless and with tears streaming down my face. Just so powerful.
I have loved that song for a long time by the Counting Crowes, I grew up with it as Micheal did but the way Noah presented it was very special. As a musician, I love to see the feelings different people get from music and that is something that is truly on display with this video. Very well done!
No dry eyes on this side of the keyboard, what a powerful performance. Like you, Michael I've heard this song countless times, but it takes that one artist, that one version to make it mean something more than what it was before to each one of us. As, always, your insight is always worth the time and it never fails to shed just a little more light on the creative mind. Thank you.
Yes, it is Counting Crows. And ever since this album came out, and to this day, I feel like more than one song from this album are perfect examples of poetry in music. The album is called August And Everything After, and it's one of my all time favorites.
Dude, the performance was amazing by Noah and between his performance and your perspective on creating art that you shared in the first 3rd of the video, I felt very inspired. Started creating a painting.. I play guitar too… but this inspired visual art for me. Thanks for the inspiration 😎🤘
Oh nice! Love Noah. I've run sound for him before, he's friends with friends of mine. Or at least he used to be like 15 years ago. Cool to see his name pop up on your channel
One of the first songs that really hit me hard growing up. This cover does Adam and the band proud. God I love this channel/community. I’ve found so many unbelievable bands and songs through this channel. I don’t play any instruments but love the break downs and reactions. Lyrics matter I love how you not only break down the music but also the message. One of the best RU-vid channels out there been following for years now. Keep it up good sir you make a difference in the lives of so many.
I truly believe that August and Everything After is the most unbelievably perfect work of art of the 90s. It may be the greatest I’ve ever heard. My musical tastes span from Hip-Hop, to “Jam Bands,” to Post-Rock, to Alt Country, to Jazz. But I truly believe the lyrics and delivery and musicality of this album is an all-timer.
Love you Michael. I, normally, just re-watch OVER and OVER my favorites where I first discovered you (first with Oliver Anthony and then late with Ren). I figure that your other stuff is just as great (because of your empathy and intelligence). But, I am checking this out because you can only watch the other stuff only a few thousand times. Of course, this is a great reaction/commentary! Thanks. Appreciate it!
I've heard this song many times. I've played it a lot because I always loved the CC. But this may be the first time I've ever HEARD this song. Thank you for the intro to Noah Gunderson. From the comments, it sounds like I've got a lot of catching up to do.
You should watch his song Heavy Metals from the same gig. Noah has loads of banging songs. He should be a mega star… and may still do that.. a proper songwriter and performer
I agree, can’t believe Mike doesn’t know more of them.. hey we can start here. Not the greatest guitarists but solid for the songs and always sounded great live
I find it to be a truth for everyone that you will find a piece of art - music, painting, poetry, literature - that resonates with you at a certain point in your life and has more meaning in that moment than it will for you ever again. Those moments are incredibly deep and can change your life. Even now I can think back to a couple of songs that, in that one passage of time, suddenly had more meaning and more emotion than I would have believed possible. This cover seems to be the result of such a moment for him.
