Hi Michael, this is Chris from J. Rockett Audio Designs. I wanted to share our story on how we started working with Guthrie. I had just moved to Nashville and wanted to find an artist that encompassed the Nashville thing. I was at Joe Glaser's getting a repair done and asked Joe who he thought fit that bill. Before I could finish my question he said Guthrie. I reached out to Guthrie immediately and that is how the relationship started. If you ever get a chance to see him with his trio for a night you will hear an endless bag of licks....so deep it is crazy. Guthrie is a great guy as well which really makes it more appealing but he is as good as it gets!! Love you channel!
I have in recent years become familiar with GUTHRIE TRAPP ... he is awsumb ... both these guys are HOT in this clip ... I am a funky jazz lover after Howard Roberts ... country can be so funky too ... Brent Mason ... Vince Gill ... Johnny Highland ... OMG, so many fantastic pickers ... talk to ME !!! ... I love it all ...
I love how Guthrie comes out a little understated and then smashes you with some incredible melodic chromatic outside the box laser beam of a lick and leaves you slack jawed.
Cousin Kenny Vaughan is sooooo over looked! First time I saw him was Austin City Limits with Lucinda back in early 90's. So incredibly tasteful and true to country picking, never misses a note, always plays the right part, so clean. Tele, amp and thousands of hours of practice. Check him and Marty Stuart out another great player just smokin'.
Kenny has said that Chris Scruggs is the best guitar player in their band. I haven't heard Chris jam like this, I have heard plenty of his country playing and yes, he's VERY good. He also switches between lead guitar and table steel in a heartbeat, where he's equally as good. I'd love to see Chris with these guys and/or Brent Mason.
Guthrie has reached legendary status amongst fellow players, he just owns everything he does. That little latin infused lick is one of his trademarks, really cool stuff!
My wife and I went to Nashville three weeks ago. Always wanted to go and it did not disappoint. We went to The Kitchen and watched Guthrie perform. Insane! He is about as good as it gets!!
Next time, go down to Robert's and watch 21 year old Luke McQueary play. He's the last of the young players mentored by Don Kelley. He's insanely good.
oooo, ooo, sent this month's ago, I am huge fan of both. Kenny doesn't have much solo on video because he is so busy as sideman, studio, touring with Marty Stuart. Hope you see both in N'Ville. 💕🙋🎶
Kenny would have a regular trio gig at a club here in Nashville. Killer jazz-o-politin country. And then Guthrie would fill in when Kenny was out. 2 versions. Both stellar. And often Dave Roe was on bass and either Jeffrey Clemens or Jimmy Lester was on drums. One of the many great reasons to live in the Nashville area.
About 13:40 you can see Kenny is absolutely dialed in to what GT is doing, he turns to the drummer to kick it up, and leads GT to another level. These are pros. Fun to watch.
Not so easy even for a teacher to take two totally Masterclass players . Got ta love it !!!!! Nothing for Kenny & Guthrie & Brent Mason to play this way all the time.
Guthrie is hands down one of the most incredible players out there today. He’s just so damn good. Seen him live with John Oates and blown away. Cannot wait to get back to nashville and catch him with his trio
I think you hit the proverbial "nail on the head" with two things you pointed out. The "country chromatic mindset" and "jazz chromatic mindset". To me, it's those guys that fluidly move through either or both of those mindsets that are the true guitar greats. Always love listening to Tony Rice (as an example) and his work in Bluegrass and then the jazz work he did on the first David Grisman Quintet album. Thanks for posting this...
Dude - I am so glad Guthrie is on your radar now. I found him years ago when he was first starting up his RU-vid channel. He's got to be my favorite player ever - and yeah he can play fast - but when he plays slow - I love it. The note choices just roll into right what you want to hear. I even took a lesson from him for my birthday - so much fun. He's made a big difference for me personally in opening up the neck with how he views it - so thankful. I'm still working on it obviously - but it's so great to be able to see a light at the end of the tunnel vs being in darkness and not knowing which way to turn in your search for unlocking the neck. Pretty much every night I walk through my CAGED chord shapes - but that's not enough (that's where most people stop short). After that - you play the major scale over each shape, then arpeggios, then pentatonic. You've got to be able to see it all constantly no matter what lick you are playing or where you came from - you have to know what chord (shape) you are playing out of. That's the key - that's the core of what Guthrie preaches. I haven't mastered it, but I KNOW it to be true. There are some who argue - I say argue with that performance. If a master like this is telling you exactly how he thinks and some other RU-vidr nobody is saying it's wrong - who you going to believe? Thanks so much Guthrie.
Also go check out his solo on the the La Grange finale at the Billy Gibbons tribute show from the Ryman a few weeks back. He straight up cut every other player on the stage! And there were some legends up there
This is kind of a twist on your breakdown/react videos but I've seen a bunch of videos on youtube where an "expert" does a review of different movies and specific scenes and talks about what they got right and wrong (sniper scenes, martial arts scenes, sword fights etc). It would be cool to see you do something similar. Some possible movies that come to mind are things like Crossroads, School of rock, Tenacious D. I'm sure there are hundreds to choose from.
So glad you found this video. I saw Kenny in one of those bars on Broadway in Nashville (not knowing who he was) in mid 2000’s playing great rock songs, and later realized he was more than a street musician and followed him since. I found this vid several years ago when it came out, and that is when I found out who Guthrie Trapp was, WHOA! Good find Dude!
I got really excited when I saw this pop up in my notifications today! Guthrie is one of the absolute best country pickers on the planet and this video really shows his talents off. I'm glad you stopped it during his solo as much as you did. I've watched this video like 30+ times and I learned more from when you stopped and talked about some of what he's doing than I ever have in previous watches. Thanks for picking my video!
That’s awesome!!! Kenny has always been one of my favorite players !! Guthrie is awesome & JT cure on bass playing with Chris Stapleton a great bass player!!
😳All I can say about my extraordinary 6 string slinging Nashville homie Guthrie is...DAMMIT BOY...! Super powerful stuff. This hits like a Derrick Henry stiff arm to the temple or like watching Jordan take off from the free throw line... 2 more...Mind Blowing... 🙏🏾👊🏾
Don't apologize for stopping during the solo man! Quite honestly with guys like Guthrie, I don't see any other choice other than to slow it down between these blazing and HIGHLY unique note choices. I find myself doing the same thing and having to go back wondering "what the heck did I just hear?" We need to hear it multiple times to be able to digest it. Great vid. Case in point 13:07 with all due respect Mr. Trapp, what the HECK??? Just mind-boggling!
Dude, just checked my email 'sent' folder (to you)....in October 2020 I BEGGED you to watch this video. I've probably watched this 250 times and made every one of my friends sit through it with me, t'boot! LOL
I obviously haven't heard enough of Guthrie. I would love to see him and Brent Mason together. That would be something to witness. As good as Kenny is, he's said that Chris Scruggs is the best guitar player in the Fabulous Superlatives. I've seen Chris play. He's a natural.
Michael I recently moved to Nashville…. 2 years ago, I’m from Boston Ive played guitar off and on for many years…I get to see Guthrie almost every Monday night at the Underdog …sit at the bar about 4 feet away . And watch that amazing shit for $10.00 …wtf Only in Nashville. !!! It used to be like that in Boston when I was a young man …more in a Jazz sense…Unfortunately most people don’t get it. Lucky me!!!!!!
I'm no guitar player but I love music and I love watching amazing guitar players, but what I love more is to see an amazing musician like yourself appreciating other amazing musicians, that's why I watch your videos
Hello Michael, how are you? Today is 7-10-24 and seeing this for 1st time. How was your trip of 2 yrs ago and was Guthrie on fire when you saw him? Also, very cool your buds with Corey - CC is cool as cream. Always enjoy watching/rewatching your Jerry stuff. Thank you for sharing. Just like all the rest of the guys putting it out there for free, you didn’t have to - much appreciated! Jeff B in Colorado
Guthrie is awesome. His first album Pick Peace is really really good, too. all instrumental and he carries it perfectly. It goes beyond country and it works. Good instructor, too, for that matter. enjoy him!
That slick, "change of feel lick" you mention at 13:00 sounds to me like Guthrie is quoting from the merlody to the Beatles' "She's a Woman." which makes it doubly cool. Thanks for the best guitsr and song analysis out there.
If you downloaded the youtube content you could import it into your daw and have much better control over how far and back you get with the push of a button.
Trapp and Kenny are from another planet. I'm no great player, but when I'm playing lead in this type of country, in my mind it's structurally about alternating between major and blues scale single-notes, and also incorporating pedal steel-type bends and sixth and third double stops. I also try not to think in terms of scales but in terms of chord shapes and triads. And even for someone who is not anywhere near technically proficient enough to be able to play this genre properly, using that variety is enough to fake my way through a solo or two in a way that isn't boring or repetitive.
Canadian blues and rock guitarist, singer, songwriter Colin James began his career touring with Stevie Ray Vaughan in a permanent opening spot. Since then, James has released 20 studio albums and won 7 Juno Awards (Canada’s Grammy), 27 Maple Blues Awards and earned multi-platinum record sales. Colin was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2014. A superb guitarist, he is considered a musician’s musician. James’ 1988 self-titled debut was the fastest selling album in Canadian history. It won him his first Juno Award and an opening spot on tour with Keith Richards. It wasn’t until his critically acclaimed album Blue Highways (2016) that Colin James found himself topping the blues chart. In addition he's worked with some of the world’s most revered artists including Bonnie Raitt, Albert Collins, Pops Staples, Robert Cray, Albert King, Keith Richards, Lenny Kravitz, ZZ Top, Mavis Staples, Luther Allison, Carlos Santana and many more ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c9mNfhWn0CY.html
Hey! Interesting to hear Guthrie Govan's name crop up when you were searching for the *other* Guthrie 60 seconds in. 😉 I've thought for a while that you'd have fun with Guthrie Govan, especially when he's doing a bit of the educational, messing-around stuff, rather than just shredding. Would suggest you give this a listen - would love to hear your take on it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SXpwi6teEkQ.html
Have a great time on your vacation man! Dude, you’ve gotta check out Pale Fire if you haven’t already. Amanda Shires ft Jason. Dude, she’s a monster songwriter too and god damn that classic country voice gives me chills. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TZf1QshGLGY.html
Hi Mike. I was there that night at the Kitchen Downtown (7/15). What an incredible performance they put on. I got a call from a friend in Michigan who asked me if I was in Nashville recently. When I asked why, he said that he saw me on RU-vid on a Guthrie Trapp, Video. Evidently it was you that recorded a portion of "Love the one Your With". I was sitting up front with the Fender Custom Shop cap on. Going back in the spring to see him again. Can't wait.
I knew Guthrie when he was 16, lol he was crazy good then. He could rip SRV and Eddie Van Halen stuff as a kid. His dad and I worked in a boatyard and he would practice mandolin for us. Good times.
Guthrie trapp is the man. I saw him and Tom Buk live not too long ago. Killer show. Got a couple videos I could list of either Tom or Guthrie that you would love
Hey I enjoy your channel a lot. I am a music fan and have played guitar for 53 years. I am happy to see you cover some Of the guitar players that I admire. Your videos on the Grateful Dead were quite good. Keep up the good work and thanks
