In 1989 my first rock concert was MetallicA. I was 16. I can still remember James being backlit at the beginning of Blackened to open the show. It was the coolest thing I had seen to that point in my life. LOL
I know that Metallica are fans of Motorhead, and I see this track as a tribute to Overkill by Motorhead, with a very similar guitar vibe, similar opening drums and even the drum reprieve at the end. Great tribute, great track, and as always, great work Michael.
7:56 “This is old-schools Metallica… holy shit!” Lol and the look on his face. I have to say I had that same look and the same thoughts when I first heard this. HELL YEAH!!
I love watching you just thinking about the song, your head shaking, with your hands not even on the guitar. You are processing the song and we are watching it. It’s cool to see.
Hey man, just signed up for a year of Guitar Gate yesterday. It is exactly what I've been looking for as a self-taught guitarist. I would highly recommend that you advertise more often the fact that you have a FREE multi-lesson course on there. I had no idea and I bet that a lot of others don't as well. I am super excited to dig into the lessons you have on there, especially the theory. Anyway, thx for everything.
The style very much is yes,, however i submit this. If you listen at 3:43 of this video... that little riff that gets played, is literally the intro to Breadfan! I'm sure they are using some old influences on this album and i'm 100% ok with that!
I always love your videos Michael. You always give us the guitarist perspective and I love that. Agreed it’s a classic Metallica song. Reminds me of breadfan/blitzkrieg/hit the lights/motorbreath
Biggest hit I got from the thing, If you were an exceptional guitarist as a teenager you find in Metallica obtainable shred and you feel like a golden god. They're setting up the kids with new shred to show them the way. Hit the lights redux is a good thing. I was eleven when I played hit the lights. Pumped for this new album.
The solo is just four Signature Kirk Licks and I ain't complaining. Sounds great. This song is a modern-day Hit the Lights, lyrically and musically. Sounds straight off a Diamond Head album.
Right. I thought the exact same thing when I heard the solo... I'm like this is just snippets of past different stuff pasted together one after the other. I mean I'm not complaining or criticizing, but IT IS WHAT IT IS.
Really loving the new track, and a cool reaction as always Michael! As much as I love the folk/country singer-songwriters, I'll always be a die hard metal head at heart! Metallica was of course one of the first bands to start me down that path years and years ago. More hard rock and metal reactions please! Classic bands like Testament or Pantera, newer heavy bands such as Alter Bridge or Gojira... Rock on and happy belated Thanksgiving from Bangor, Maine!
I love seeing guitars used for something they weren’t “designed” for. Also I have the American ultra strat so I can sound like EVH one second and jimi the next lol
So refreshing to see a positive response to new Metallica music. So popular nowadays to shit on them instead of celebrating they’re still here and putting out music. Father Time is undefeated, so we need to cherish this while we still have it.
Metallica is the reason I started playing guitar 20 something years ago. I still can't down pick as fast as James no matter how much I practice but this new song is absolute🔥🔥. You are also an incredible down to earth person. I really enjoy your videos and your insights on how you break down the music you are listening to
It's not that hard. The secret is to relax your hand, you don't have to pick hard. Move as little as possible. Your instinct is to squeeze your hand muscle hard and move way too much. It really isn't that hard.
Its really interesting to see how different players (non metal players) interpret the chromatic riff and the main riff. My ears are telling me the chromatic riff (and the hook) is played on the A and D strings as opposed as what you did.
It's Electric, Overkill, and Hit the Lights all mixed together with the Hardwired production. It's not bad, but only 3 minutes of a 77 minute album so who knows what all flavors will be on there.
I usually only show for Benjamin Tod, but MetallicA raised me, I'm 37, from 6th grade to age 25 listening to exclusively MetallicA. Mixed feelings on if that was healthy, but yea love it
@@cancerousswine9646 I saw a comment somewhere that said "When people say they miss old Metallica they mean they miss Cliff Burton." I agree with that.
August by flipturn!!! Audiotree live performance is amazing. You’ll love them and start seeing them every time they come to Baltimore (which is often)!!!
Video pauses at 1:40ish and EVERY Metallica fan in the world knows exactly what's coming when you hit play next. It's formulaic, it's derivative... and it's awesome. Classic Metallica. Love your work, and your joy Mike.
at the start you start at 5and7 and hit that slide 2 downstroke on a and do that till u get to the first fret the it is as 5 7 power chord slide 3 5 power chord then a open a all this is on the a and d strings
James singing is epic as always, as so is Lars´s drumming, many hate on Lars, he is very good at Metallica drumming, works great for the band same with Kirk, and Robert is just a beast...
I said the same thing about the downpicking! Been a while since I've been this excited about Metallica - reminds me a bit of the intensity of the covers in Garage Inc. - so freaking good.
I have to eat my shoe a bit on my comment I left under the Pantera vid. I have only heard one song off the album and I didnt care for it, but as soon as this song began, I could hear the "hit the lights" feel and this song definitely hearkens back to some good old thrash. Probably wont see them on this tour. The tix are outrageous. 4Gs to be in the pit, but Im anxiously awaiting BLS, Anthrax and Exodus. Just saw Priest with Queensryche which was phenomenal as usual. Anyway, I guess I need to dive into the rest of the album before complaining, hah.
i've seen and heard this many times and its funny you caught the wah part.. and it wasn't in the solo.. amazing.. I knew Kirk had it in him.. This song makes me think someone important sat them down and said aren't you guys the ones that did Kill'em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets, if so act like it.." This has some Kill'em all feel to it and it has a very strong Motorhead riff which is awesome. And no Wah was damaged in the solo. Hope the rest of the album is like this. And finally Lars is earning his money again, just wonder if he'll play it live like this? Image this song w/ the Ride the Lightning tone..
Mike I love your videos, and your talent and intuition are second to none, but I gotta ask you about the elephant in the room. How do you not hear that it’s a pull off and not a bend for the beginning of the main riff? (e.g. GNR Perfect Crime)
Alright love this new Metallica song. And James is the downtroke God we all know that BUT we must give Kirk praises because he’s right there with him down stroking us to oblivion on all the riffs. Great stuff from that amazing guitar duo.
Micheal! Please please please check out Leon Majcen ain’t no sunshine cover …… it’s is one of the coolest sounding guitars ive ever heard…. The kids got it
