I think the reason that all people are resonating to this message is that *humanity* wants to go home...a return to our ancestral love for one another...family, hearth, truth, love...all that jazz. It's a rejection of the modern nightmare.

I was born in 1980 and I agree 100%. I went through a lot of struggles in my teen years and even in my elementary years but I've never witnessed insanity as I have in the last I'd say 5 years. This world is so upside down and backwards. And yes I agree.. I want to go home

You made a great point Michael. Oliver and I are cut from different clothes. He’s a God fearing man and I’m not religious, but his music is true. Not because of the subject matter, but that it comes from his core. And it’s the greatest art any person can make

It means to call upon the lord but not follow his teachings. It means to talk the talk but not walk with him. Basically it means being a hypocrite. Yes you shouldn't openly curse using God's name at a constant. But again, that's not what that verse means at all.

Yeah, but this is common in music: Bob Dylan, John Denver, Freddie Mercury - not their real names. Since I don't know him personally, I'm gonna call him Oliver Anthony - and that's how most people are going to know him, and know who you are talking about so... that makes the most sense to me.
Yes! Ppl know real when they hear and see it. That's why Oliver is loved. Art is left up to interpretation, I know what he's saying yet I can see home being in a context of love of fellow man & out of this materialistic world.

I see a man struggling in a way I have and all I want is for him to be able to use his music for himself first. I hope he gets that opportunity because I see a lot of people trying to use him for their purposes. He deserves that opportunity as an artist to grow and shape his own narrative.

I sincerely hope that I don’t see him campaign stumping for any politician any time or ever. I like everything about his music, I’m good with what he’s feeling, but I can see some politicians wanting to use him as a pawn. Hope that doesn’t happen.
When I was a little girl and I would get upset, I would cry and say I just want to go home even when I was home. Haven't related to this more than anything. Brings back those feelings of not feeling like I'm home.

i instantly loved oliver when i heard his first words of song, i've listened to his entire backlog no matter how bad the recordings are. i'm so grateful that folk music is #1 right now in the world, this can only bring good things and important conversations.
Art is a reflection - you nailed it...the reason he resonates too is that he's not trying to sell anything, he is a creator who has openly stated he starting writing and playing music to help with his own depression. I too wish him well - he is doing great work in a world that needs to hear this message, whether or not he realises it 🙏

Well said Michael. I agree 100%. The reason this guy is resonating with so many people across the globe is the fact that he is authentic and real. And he is able to convey his heart in a way that connects with others. That’s why the person in South Africa that knows nothing about American politics, and knows nothing about Appalachia, instantly connects with Oliver Anthony. They can plug their situation, circumstance, or life experience, into the framework that Oliver creates and they say, “I get it. I’ve had those same feelings.”
Regardless of how you feel about Oliver Anthony, you can feel the emotion resonating from that gravelly voice and the trailing vibrato in each of the lines. It's something that many seek, but few truly find. It comes naturally for him, but it took a lot of pain and depression to bring it to the fore.

They may be in the same "economic class", but they are not the same. For example, one is living off the dole of the taxpayer. The other is working and paying into the system. I'll let you decide who is who, but what was clearly referenced in the song was the person that is nothing but a draw on the system. He's referring to the person that doesn't work and doesn't want to and gets paid using tax dollars provided by the working class to keep themselves in a unhealthy state. His emotion and his articulation, or lack of articulation with his words just adds to the emotion of this song. Then you add in the lyrics of the song and the twang of his guitar just makes this a great song.
Anyone saying this man doesn't believe the words in these songs, has got to be either emotionally stunted, or playing team sports. I can't imagine hearing this man almost cry some parts of these songs out and say it's all an act.
He is singing to the heart of many generations. He will not be forgotten. I pray he makes it through all this publicity and everybody interrupting his privacy.

I am not a musician nor have the discipline to become one but I have to say I love your video's and the reactions to Christopher Anthony Lunsford's , AKA Oliver Anthony's, new music. You can "feel" the honesty in his music and for you have that same enthusiasm is awesome to see.
You hit it square man... he is popular because he is pouring his heart out..!! There will always be haters, but that is, was, and will always be the sign of a true artist whatever the medium.. to put your heart and soul into your art... Some people appreciate it and others don't.

Michael I am so glad you gave an honest opinion of Oliver, you left politics out of it, so many on the left are blasting this guy and many of my hero's in the music community will blast him also. We need to keep politics out of it because at the end of the day 3 chords and the truth will always prevail.
Oliver has brought the world to tears. Amazingly from all walks of life. He is just what the world needed. A single voice, no explanation we all understand. More importantly an anthem a coming together of the masses. They need to play it in stadiums, let’s put a fire in the bellies of the world population to push back against the evil that seeks to destroy us and minimize us.

I am a Christian, with mostly conservative views and identify politically as Libertarian, and I love Phish, the Dead, Umphree's McGee, etc; and I know that our "politics" don't match, but our love for good music, positive attitudes, and love for people is shared, we just understand how to get there differently. The exciting thing is that regular people are making a statement about the problems and fears of the current situations through music. This happened during Vietnam War and the voice of the young were heard through the music of protest. For the first time since Covid I feel something positive happening.

It's hard to believe we are not living in a version of Orwells 1984 with how much hate is thrown at him. People seem to have lost free will and can only feel connected through hatred. I've instantly found my new favorite artist in Oliver Anthony and can relate so much to his messages. He is bringing many people from all walks of life together. Even though at 46 I don't really play much anymore and haven't for sometime. I just enjoy hearing you explain music theory but also how you delve into the lyrics and explore the whole song. It's kinda funny you said, roughly speaking, that he's in a place to where he has to create. There's many different ways for me to connect with Oliver's music. One being that it's coming from the heart. I believe what he's saying. But on a very serious level. I was a professional mechanic, welder, and a so so fabricator. I had a back surgery that failed. I'm 100% disabled now. It hurts just to sit up. Although in my head all I can think about is making and creating things. It's basically killing me to not be able to work. Back to the song, Yeah I feel like I just want to go home. I feel like I'm just sitting here waiting to die. Because, for me personally, what I'm enduring feels worse than death. The REALLY messed up thing is that I could be fixed!! I have a doctor that has the ability to make my life 1000 times better. I just can't afford it. Medicare won't cover it, even though it's cheaper in the long run. I cannot even begin to describe what that feels like inside. Yes, I'm well aware that there's people who are WAY worse off than I am. I'm in no way trying to compare others pain and suffering to mine, period. My heart goes out to those folks more than you'll know. Anyway, this is how I relate to this song. Thanks for the great content Mr. Palmisano. My line for artists has always been I don't mind politics, I mind when you tell me what to do or what to think. If they're respectful I have no problem continuing to support them - the second they aren't I'm done. I love the song and you had a great breakdown Michael.

The best thing about Oliver's music is that all of these songs of his, he wrote and performed (recorded) while being consumed and haunted by these emotions/addiction/pain and this was his way of getting it off his chest. Thats why you can feel the emotions so strongly in his music.

He’s not only speaking to the “blue collar working class.” Anyone from any demographic, any socioeconomic background, etc. can feel hardships in life. I personally believe many from all groups right now resonate with what he’s signing about right now.

Last I checked I thought we were still a free country..Oliver definitely feels what he's singing, and he has the right and freedom to sing about it, it should be appreciated! The fact that he believes what he Is singing is the reason why he is hitting so many people in the heart!
I know the chances of you doing 4 of his songs is slim but he has a song that is called “VCR Kid” and it is incredible. It makes me cry every time it’s sad but positive at the same time and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

I was born of a broken home. My mother was a drug addict it took my dad 4 years to gain full possession of me. My mother also used my disability , and my dads child support money to feed her addiction further. Up until I was 6 years old you could see bone through skin. When I was finally able to be rescued by my dad my life improved. When I was 23 years old on April 2nd 2014 I was diagnosed with a brain tumor that took up between 25-30% of cranial space. My doctor made me aware that my nervous system to my bodies right side is damaged but can be maintained to be on par with my bodies left side and memory exercises . So it’s hard to believe I took to music , I choose to learn to play the bass guitar. The low end feeling of notes and what I call being a tempo translator has helped me out gratefully! It’s one thing I never thought I would be able to do. I’ve dealt with some pretty terrible people in this world post neurosurgery. Surgery markings that will never go away , muscle tissue had to be removed from my face for the doctor to save my life. Many people have pointed out the deformity to me around their kids , even encouraging their kids to treat me like I’m not a human. I’ve been pushed to a brink of having facial reconstruction surgery done but I told myself the tide will pass, so to me Music is my way to release my frustration and anger !
I always jusge music by goose bumps. If i get them its a good song. I still get goose bumps when i hear a good version of the national anthem and ive probably heard it a million times. When i first heard Rich Men i put my phone on loop and fell asleep to it. It was still playing when i woke up.

Interesting that so many comments mention he is “resonating.” I think it too but what do we really mean? I guess he is feeling the same way we do in a honest non-judgemental way. After all who doesn’t want to go home to be with the Lord. Im thankful this country still resonates with his message. Maybe there’s still hope for us.
I'm a Serb who lives and grew up in a Western European country and his music and words pretty much from beginning to end resonate with me. It's beautiful and just what we need.

In person we could have a deep discussion about this but to me, what matters most is the artist is saying it with genuine belief and conviction and that can't be denied. I don't agree with absolutely everything...doesn't make me love it any less. The soul is a beautiful thing.
