May 77 is great but May 78 is so much better. That year was great for them. Egypt? Read about how Phil Lesh placed his speakers in the giant pyramid. Only 50,000 were at that show. Imagine taking LSD in the desert tripping your balls off

Thank you for posting these amazing videos. I started listening to roots reggae music about 40 years ago. I was always a casual Grateful Dead fan but about two years ago I started doing a deep dive into all Grateful Dead music. I stumbled upon your video of Row Jimmy and listening to your explanation of how the song had a reggae beat to it seem to pull everything together for me. Row Jimmy has always been one of my favorite songs by the Dead and now I understand why. I think Jerry’s slide guitar solos are amazing and I wish he would have done more on the slide. Thanks again!

This is the brilliance of the Dead. To someone "unlearned" never could a band sound so lost yey know exactly where they were. Jerrys Brilliance was his "noodling" would build to the most unbelieveable peaks. Crescendos building and cascading at the same time. And he knew exactly where he was going. And Michael, youve discovered Bobby and Phils brilliance. Bobby, the master chordsman with the most intricately simple rhythms and Phil the most studied of all of them. And dont count out the drums. Mickey and Bill doing 2 "completely different things yet completely in sync with all those things perceived as "out of sync". It was always an adventure seeing them live. You never knew where you were going. You were just along for a beautiful peaceful ride.

To go along with what you are saying; I saw a documentary on the making of 'Catch A Fire' (the Wailers first album), the studio musician (piano player) was having trouble playing the song. He started asking Bob questions on how he should be play it. Bob walked over and just started slamming his hands on the keys to a rhyme and said "Na, na, mon, just feel it."

A Bill Kreutzmann quote from Wikipedia: "Jerry brought "Row Jimmy" into us one day, and it was really difficult to get a grip on it at first. It has a slow tempo, which makes it seem like it would be easy, but it calls for a slight reggae groove layered over a ballad. Rhythmically, the lengths aren't traditional. They're not just twos and fours. It's deceiving. Basically, you have to play the song in half-time with a double-time bounce on top. It's trickier than it sounds. But once I locked into it, "Row Jimmy" became one of the best songs in our repertoire."
