Omg lol I literally just finished listening to this song as we speak and was about to suggest it to you. Jamel, the Talking Heads have a discography that is unreal . As you’re now finding out what all the hype is about
Hi there! This is WAAAY off-topic from the joviality of the Talking Heads, but check out Billy Joel's song about Viet Nam. Gives me goosebumps EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I've never had enough courage to play it live. It's pretty heavy. And brilliant. It's called "Goodnight Saigon." This is a very high-quality link. I still can't get through the song without a tear coming to my eye. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0e5AUckHNps.html
I highly recommend the whole Stop Making Sense film (not necessarily for a reaction, but just to watch it). It is fantastic start to finish, the Talking Heads (and singer David Byrne) were never more at the top of their game, and it was directed by Jonathan Demme, of all people, who directed Silence of the Lambs. And Tina Weymouth is one of the all time great bassists, certainly of the 1980s.
Definitely one of the best concert movies ever made. The show was...incredible. And this movie really captures how brilliant the band was at the peak of their powers.
Funkadelic!! Are you kidding me. I had no idea. Next you will be telling me Botsie Collins was playing drums. I am joking of course. Thanks for the education, as a person who loves Funkadelic, P-Funk, George Clinton, etc, it make total sense that I loved this song so much. I said making sense....get it?
it's a fantastic tune, for sure! though I'm in love with The Accident (seriously, a bassoon???) and Now I'm Your Mom (what other rock song has a breakout jam with a woodwind section??? Only DB!)
When I was in high school someone told me I’d be a good bass player because I have big hands. I never even thought About and just assumed bass players have big hands. But there are so many great women bass players I know now that it’s not true. I sometimes wonder if having smaller hands is an advantage.
The David Byrne "Big Suit" was legendary during this tour. In fact, Byrne in the suit is part of the poster for the film. I've said it before -- "Stop Making Sense" is the BEST rock concert film ever. I can put on just about any song in the film and it makes me SMILE!!! Great reaction!! (Another vote for "Burning Down the House" from the film.)
As everyone will tell you, the whole "Stop Making Sense" is the greatest concert film of all time. Watch and pick whatever you like to make a reaction video.
@@ryantomkyles Agree 100%. And I'm a guy who usually doesn't like the live versions of songs. But you can tell the thought behind the both the presentation and the song selection to encompass a full whole. A Masterpiece!
I saw the film as a kid... and it never left me... was so happy to find it again on a streaming service now 20+ years later... and it blew me away again. You're not lying, it really is the greatest concert film of all time!
David Byrne's explanation for the big suit is that he wanted to make his head look smaller, lol. I saw them do this show in Oct. '83 - wow, 37 years ago - and it was one of the very best concerts I ever saw. When the movie came out I went to see it 4 times in one week ...
@kendeeni - I saw this show in Philadelphia in ‘83 too! Best show I’ve ever seen! I hope Jamel reacts to This Must Be The Place. It’s so fun to see David Byrne dance with that lamp!
Sorry, life long Talking Heads fan here. The line is actually "They say compassion is a virtue, but I don't have the time." From the song "No Compassion" from the "More Songs About Buildings and Food" Album. I ran to the record store and bought it the day it came out. Played it until it was so worn out I had to buy another copy! Peace!
@@lordzhuge Thank you sir. You are correct. Many years since I listened to the original album. Never bought it on CD because the sound isn't the same. Can it be 43 years already?I Wow. i remember bringing that album to high school during the height of the Disco craze. The world was not prepared for David Byrne. He was too far ahead of his time.
Check out David Byrne’s current concert American Utopia tour. I saw the show that this was made from live at the Greek Theater in the early 80’s. The only show that topped this for me is the current tour.
This live concert documentary “Stop Making Sense” is literally the best filmed concert of all time, no @‘s, I’ll die on that hill. ☺️ Get some popcorn and settle in for a great night, Jamal! Added plus is that I saw the Heads live twice back in the day, including this tour. It was even more jaw dropping live.
My wish is that I got to see them live, so I'm a bit jealous! I remember Stop Making Sense being on at the cinema when it was released, but was too young to go by myself & parents weren't interested. I've owned the DVD for ages and watched it plenty of times, but, thankfully, a cinema in Sydney recently screened Stop Making Sense and it was a great evening. It was my wife's first time watching it and she was blown away.
There are others that can also arguably hold that title too (the last waltz). But there’s no debate about which is best in which this film isn’t in the top 3-5. No doubt about it.
I think what made it so great is that is literally just a film of the entire concert, in the sequence it was performed. There are no interviews, no backstage scenes, no shots of the crowd, no special effects or fantasy sequences. Often, it is just a wide shot of the stage, as if you were in the audience.
The bass player, Tina Weymouth and the drummer, Chris Franz are a married couple. They did a side project called the Tom Tom Club. Jamel may know their song “Genius of Love”. It was big in the 80s hip hop circuit.
David Byrne has always been on the performance art side of the fence. He was recently on SNL and his new music is just as fresh and wonderful to hear. ☆
Jonathan Demme directed this concert film. He was also the director of Silence of the Lambs and a similar Neil Young concert film called Heart of Gold.
This clip of David Byrne in the huge-ass suit is the clip that got all the attention when the movie Stop Making Sense came out. The band were not just musical innovators, they also were also innovators in stage design and performance. Endlessly innovative and creative.
Yes! I remember people dancing in the theatre too! They had the sound turned up loud so it felt like a concert! I regret I only saw it twice in the theatre.
That suit was one he had specially designed. It fit him inside but was absurdly oversize outside. I think it had some kind of harness or frame in it to keep its shape.
Yeah I saw that late one night and was blown away, especially by the young Argentinian fans, they were crazy for it. Big Rosie riding the train was indeed a spectacular image but it's not a patch on the artistry and imagery of SMS. Sorry
@@jasonritchie8475 Yeah, I know TH have much talent and SMS is truly fantastic (I have the LP and a longer bootleg LP of it) but for me, Live At River Plate is pure rock joy.....but each to their own hey? :)
I must reiterate the ONLY way to experience this film is from beginning to end, as the introduction of the instruments are layered one at a time for each subsequent song. David enters a bare stage with just one microphone stand waiting for him and his acoustic guitar. He presents a small BoomBox and presses "Play" on the cassette tape, which lays down the percussive track for "Psycho Killer". Slowly, one by one, the rest of the Band joins him, while stagehands dressed in black methodically assemble the rest of the equipment and instruments. The Drum kit is rolled out on platform, and eventually, the entire ensemble is present to deliver an unforgettable show that now belongs to the ages! Yes, it is best to view this Film in its proper sequence to appreciate the genius of it in it's entirety!✌🍁✌
I'm gkad you posted this, the reason to see the concert from the beginning. It's true, Jamal. You'll love it. And then you'll be one of us.... One of us.... One of us.... 😉
There were movie critics who said that they were not interested in The Talking Heads but really loved Stop Making Sense. I believe that the show was filmed in LA. Great film.
"Stop Making Sense" exists by itself. There are other great concert films, but SMS is a genre of one. Nothing quite like it before, nothing like it since. Entertaining on so many levels.
Slippery people is the hidden jewel of this DVD concert video. There is always one song on an album that does not get much publicity and is worthy. You MUST watch slippery people. You will understand what I mean after you watch it. I use to have this set as my alarm. Go Talking Heads!
There are so many great performances from this concert film: Heaven, Slippery People, Life During Wartime, Found a Job, Take Me to the River. The list goes on and on and on.
@@brian_wooley Absolutely! I love all of the songs from the concert to be honest. The only ones i'm less fond of personally are "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel" and "Genius of Love". All the other ones are constantly in my rotation.
When I saw Jamel was reacting to this I clicked IMMEDIATELY! I just knew it’d be incredible especially the dancing! He just gets it. Love, love, loved it. What I really love about Talking Heads is the Non existent race issue all the way back in 1983/84 .. they are black and white in harmony.. wonderful. Funk and quirk in unity.
I got to see TALKING HEADS on this same tour and it was so great when the concert film STOP MAKING SENSE came out. It successfully captured the pure JOY and FUNK we all felt in the audience. EVERYONE was on their feet for the whole show🥰
He's working that suit, ain't he!?!. This is a masterpiece of a concert film. It starts with a bare stage, and slowly, bit by bit, the equipment is rolled on, and the players slowly but surely, begin to fill the stage. Believe it or not, the suit gets bigger and bigger as the show goes on. They started at CBGB'S as a punk band, but took it in a whole different direction. David Byrne is a genius who is also a great photographer and visual artist. I love Tina Weymouth on bass. She rocks!
This concert was released as a movie in theaters called Stop Making Sense - a lyric from this song. Great movie/concert/live album!. Byrne is still making music solo and some albums are close to talking Heads in sound.
STop Making Sense is hands down the greatest concert movie ever filmed, with The Last Waltz maybe being the only exception and thats more like a party as opposed to a carefully choreographed production. Watch this movie immediately lol!!
I feel the same way. I love the Last Waltz and it was my favorite concert movie for many years before Stop Making Sense was released... now I'm not sure which is #1
Love that you've gotten to Talking Heads. So many good songs in the comments. My favorites are definitely "Road to Nowhere" and "Nothing But Flowers." If you treat the Stop Making Sense concert as an exercise video and you just follow everything David Byrne does you WILL get a workout. Thanks and I hope you're enjoying your journey as much as we viewers are!
If you ever start doing movies you should check out “True Stories”. Fun little look at life in a small Texas town starring the lead singer, David Byrne.
Talking Heads broke up a long time ago, but "David Byrne’s American Utopia” -- a concert filmed by Spike Lee debuts on HBO this Saturday night. "Lee’s energetic direction combined with Byrne’s exuberant staging of Talking Heads classics and other songs makes for a concert film that stands on par with Jonathan Demme’s Talking Heads classic 'Stop Making Sense.'" (AP) "Stop Making Sense" is the 1984 documentary movie this clip comes from.
Stop Making Sense is my favorite concert film ever. There isn't a wasted moment, or a less than stellar rendition of any of the songs. And David Byrne just makes me happy every time I see him behind the mic. I know I'm going to to have a smile of delight on my face for the next several minutes as I dance and sing along. I'm so glad you loved this!
Yes David Byrne calls it the Big Suit. Sadly, Talking Heads split up with a lot of animosity in the early 90s, and have only performed together one time since then, for the Rock N Roll HOF induction
Woooo! Well done Jamal! Thank you for doing this reaction! As soon as I heard the beat I knew THE BIG SUIT was going to make an appearance and was waiting for your reaction to that too! Glad you enjoyed the music as much as the video! 👩🏽
How could you not be entertained by this band. You can imagine what it did to our heads, as young teenagers when this stuff was hitting the airwaves… 🤯
Jamel, this was actually filmed in the early 1980s. I went to watch the "Stop Making Sense" concert movie when it came out in I think about 1983. the sound quality is superb! It was one of, if not THE first digital recorded live concerts. I recommend reacting to their cover of Al Green's "Take Me To The River" from this same movie!
Completely forgot about this song! Love what you do! I've rediscovered so much music I forgot about. Thank you for keeping great music alive! Thank you so much!
Sadly, they are not still going. David Byrne has flat-out refused to do any kind of reunion, to the point where I was ASTOUNDED to learn he consented to perform with them when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That was in '02. As for the big suit, I'm pretty sure that's just extra performance art. XD Other Stop Making Sense essentials: "Life During Wartime" and "Psycho Killer." (Yes, again, it has a completely different flavor to the album/weird demo cuts.) Tina Weymouth is a goddess among bass players and I will hear no argument.
Poll: Raise your hand if every time Jamel says "Let's jump right into it" your right arm automatically mimics his. Also, how many would LOVE to see Jamel in a Zoot Suit, reacting to Cherry Poppin' Daddies "Zoot Suit Riot?"
