John Mayer is living the golden life on the golden road. Let's be honest, he's doing what we all dreamed of doing, taking over and playing Jerry's solos on stage with the boys.
Perfectly said Mutualist! He has mastered Jerry's tone and doing what all of us guitarists dream of. Plus he introducing the next generation onto the Dead ensuring The Music Never Stops!
@@maxschreifels7161 man he might say he doesn't dose but I swear to God when I saw him from the front row in 2018 while I was dosed he was giving me heavy in the pocket energies and the way his face and body were moving. Dude might not of been of course but how do you do what he's doing and not at least try some medicine? Just my speculation
Man, it's awesome to finally see a member of the RU-vid guitar community digging into the treasure trove that is The Grateful Dead/Dead and Company. Masterful tones, musicianship and improvisation that for some reason seem to sneak right past most of the guitar folks out there. As a player, the Dead catalog changed everything for me. I hope it can do the same for other musicians looking for deeper inspiration. Thanks!
Same!! Im about 2 years in to really diving into playing the Dead and i still find new stuff every day. Been a listener for a long time but never thought to learn most of the stuff bc it was harder than i could handle. As ive progressed the licks come easier and ive learned a ton of material. Dont even know what else to listen to these days. 😂
I've never heard guitar playing like Jerry he gas blown my mind several times. I saw Dead & Company in 2016 and was pleasantly surprised how well John plays the songs with just a touch of bluesiness that is fantastic
I've watched this video about 4 times now over the course of a year whilst working alongside on guitargate and each time I come back here I leave with deeper understanding each time. Thank you for your course!
Absolutely love this gent! As a lifelong Deadhead...40 years of guitar playing and immersion in Grateful Dead music..this fresh enthusiasm and breakdown is priceless! Thanks Mike...will check out your courses!
Chad; I hear what your sayin', except for this one dude named Pigpen. He made them stop and restart this one time. He said they can play loose some of the time, but not all the time...
You obviously haven't heard Jerry Garcia's other projects... The acoustic band is EXTREMELY tight, also old and in the way. And Jerry and merl saunders if you like jazz. If Jerry wasn't tight he wouldn't have Tony rice, one of the best players EVER playing with him often.
2/8/73 The Grateful Dead first performed this song. With Pigpen passing away a month later on 3/8/73 I highly doubt he was on stage those last 30 days to tell the crew to tighten up. You got a recording of this?
Great stuff, Michael! As a guitar player, its great hearing someone who is obviously very well versed in music theory, break down what makes these tunes work. Keep up the good work. Lots of love from Dallas, TX!
Finding you by way of your stuff being shared in Dead groups (the way our family is, it will definitely definitely generate lots of traffic for ya!) and so glad I did! Been playing a long time and I enjoy your breakdowns. Gonna listen to Dew again, and then check out your lessons. Much love from Southwest Virginia!
Love the videos!! I can almost keep up!! But since the stuff you are talking about is really my next step I appreciate the challenge. It’s got me thinking and adjusting and trying new things which is great
hard to copy Jerry outright when D&C has brought everything down to a slow waltz - Im glad people are still enjoying the music and John is doing this thing respectfully and all, but damn the slow tempos are excruciating at times
@@HyzersGR understood - the core members are straight up old men now and it doesnt mean Mayer isnt talented (he clearly is) or it isnt fabulous that heads old and new still have something to gather for and enjoy. But yeah, like most tunes they do now the tempo on TLEO to my ears is just sluggish and kinda boring.
Two things: One of the things I love most about this song are the fills/riffs Jerry does in the verse after he sings... they are weird and and somewhat disjointed and I LOVE THEM... would love to hear you break them down. Mayer doesn't do it like Jerry... Which is fine! #2, You mentioned in your Morning Dew vid that you loved the footage... Dude, watch the Grateful Dead movie... You. Must. Watch. It. In general I absolutely love your unfettered enthusiasm for this music and the player's work on these tunes. This music is the music of my life... Your unabashed enthusiasm about it seriously brought some "dew" to my eye... Welcome to the world of the Dead!
Great video, man! I too have found a new respect for John Mayer. I’ve seen Dead & Co 3 times so far and I’m in awe every time! It’d be awesome if you could do “help on the way!”
I definitely enjoy your take on Dead songs and how much appreciation and respect you have for the musicians i hope to learn alot from you in the future I believe that you are an excellent instructor! Jerry does some smoking hot versions of Sugar-ree and John does also maybe you could break down both of them!!! Terrapin Station is also fun!!
I just discovered you while binging on all things John Mayer, his own work, and I’ve really really enjoyed your videos. (“Really really” is your signature phrase when you really really inspired about something). And now I just came across this video and I can’t even tell you how much I enjoyed it, because going to see Dead and Co shows with John Mayer over the last few years has been like going to the mountain to pray in a group trance with a whole bunch of beautiful souls. Such a joy. Watching you break down this song was also just pure joy. And I’m just a shitty rhythm guitarist with barely a clue on theory. Thank you for doing what you do and keep rocking. See you at a show!
Killer stuff bro. Much like yourself I've only recently caught John with Dead & Co. 2018 in SD and 3 x in 2019 in LA. He's a mad man and it's helped me fall in love with the Dead. This is one of my fav tunes. Great insights. Can you do one of these for the song Loser? 🤙🏼
Hey there, loving to see you checking out some great jam bands, Umphreys are incredible, so is Moe., W.panic, Government mule, saw them all a few times. Keep it going,
Summer Tour getting announced tomorrow! Awesome video, easy sub! I would love to hear a review of Morning Dew from Shoreline 2019. That was the craziest solo he has done with them and it would be incredible to hear a breakdown. All those “power up” sounds he did. Face melting for sure. Check it out!
@@Guitargate I just learned They love each other from that video. LOL, I been playin' GD songs for a hundred years but never tried that one till now. Thanks!
I was at this show! I saw phish there the week before and had low expectations for dead and co given the shows they played leading up to this one but man! They blew it out of the park that night!
It cracks me up, so many assumptions about Mayer. It always pleases me to see people who find a song or two that allows them to appreciate how great mayer is
His Live in LA 2007 concert demonstrates his different musical personalities. I recommend Slow Dancing in a Burning Room from that concert for a bit of a guitar show.
Nice breakdown, really helps bring clarity to playing with modal 'colour'. I'm a big fan of your stuff and found your Masterclass on Udemy to be an absolute goldmine of guitar technique and theory. So a huge THANK YOU for that. I would love to see you breakdown some Marcus King tunes.
has made Dead & Co. his own thing ... ` gotta say for future reference ... maybe listen to how humble John is to be swimming in the deep end. He knows who stage he is playing on. And I am happy to say that he is doing pretty damn good ... I was just coming back to edit this bud, I didn't mean it rudely and by the time I finished the video I could tell that you had not either. Sounds awesome by the way. You have a smooth sounding tone going here
I’m asking this at the beginning of the video so if you address it, I am sorry. But what do you think of the silver sky? I really want the new one with the maple board but it is expensive.
Hey man! What do you use to get your tone when recording these videos? Are you going direct into some sort of modeler or software? It sounds fantastic for this sort of thing! Cheers- Ben
Why dead and Company when he can do the original Garcia version I don't understand the logic in this and I'm not even taking anything away from dead and Company but why not go straight to the source
Good basic stuff to learn musically on how to approach playing in a band. Well I wrote basic but I mean not necessarily easy to wrap your head around when composing own stuff or just improvising with similar taste
I agree 100% never liked John Mayer until Dead and Company. ..... almost didn't go to the shows because he was in it.... but man I'm glad I gave in and went..... haven't missed one show when they come through our way
Don't forget, for the icing on that "Jerry sound" cake, use chromatics! For instance, in G mixo use A-Bb-B, C-Db-D, and F-F#-G, ascending or descending. Over the C chord it would be D-Eb-E, F-Gb-G, and Bb-B-C.
I'm dying for your reaction to phish "you enjoy myself" so many different sections that intertwine perfectly!!!!! Brilliant writing! Thanks for what you do! I enjoy watching your videos!
You should do Tennessee Jed!! The licks in that one are relatively simple but harder than they sound, and its just a fun song!!! More Dead tho. Definitely. Lol
Could you do "Big River" by either the Grateful Dead or Dead and Company? Both versions of the tune are on fire, if you get the chance it would be super cool to see what you think
