John started wearing the headphones mainly for hearing protection. He found that during rehearsals for the 2021 tour and the first few shows he was getting significant ringing in his ears afterwards so he started wearing the headphones to mitigate that. He said in addition to that he liked wearing the headphones because of how well he could hear himself and the band which allowed him to be more dynamic and expressive with his playing.
I don’t think John can handle the criticism on the tempo..so he’s out … would Be way better if he just emulated jerry when playing the music vs the current spin /direction he’s been going in
I soooo appreciate you Michael. The guitar knowledge and passion you bring but equally as powerful for me is the heart you bring to these videos. I can feel the love you have for music, and also the struggles you have been through, and to me that’s what music is all about - sharing the human condition. One video really stood out to me in that regard, I believe it’s Brokedown Palace. Anyway, I know you have a lot of admirers. Count me among them. Peace and love brother!
I never saw Jerry but I got to see Dead & Company last fall and John's playing was life altering. I've been working on Brown Eyed Women, while trying to include the uniqueness of the Dallas 2021 performance. Fun times for sure!
@@daveyboy8907 Not true at all. Stop with that nonsense. Have you ever heard Mayer talk about the Dead? The guy is all about the music and how it changed him and his approach to the instrument. He’s a highly successful solo artist who spends every summer touring with Dead & Co not because he has to, but because he wants to
@@AaronRadioStudio Haters gonna hate. I'm not a purest. I saw theDead be the best band in the world and I've seen them suck. I also saw them become a religion that ate a lot of good players they've had through the years, Including Jerry. The songs will outlive all of us. I think John kicks ass on the tunes. Sue me.
As always, Nice commentary, good analysis. The remaining band members from the original lineup did well in choosing John to fill those enormous shoes. John, during his tenure has most certainly put in his time listening to what his predecessor was doing. John has also done an outstanding job recognizing and incorporating what has come before and giving a gracious and courteous nod toJerry while still being able to incorporate is own sensibilities. John is walking a fine line and doing it with the grace and awareness of who he is playing with and who he is playing to. Also, interesting commentary on hunting 3rd’s, you did a vid analysis’ on a live GD song, I can’t remember if it was a sugaree, but you were pointing out how Jerry was hunting 4th’s. I guessing the song and how the player is interpreting it in the moment and what key it is in can influence what one may be hunting for at any given time. Jerry also had a tendency to weave an dance around the root more and land on it only when you ear was begging to hear it.
Michael - thank you!!! Thank you for summing up exactly how I felt and feel when I first heard and continued to be blown away but JM’s playing and singing with Dead and CO. I’ve seen Mayer so many times prior…Dead and CO is in my opinion his best work Thanks for articulating my exact thoughts
Idk what round means lmao. But to me mayer sounds mire bluesy, and jerry sounds more busy/jazzy. But mayer does an amazing job of doing a jerry like tribute to jerry but while making it his own and adding his touches. This is the blueprint for what I am trying to become as an improviser. You’ve helped more than you know, brother. You and stitch method are the best guitar teachers on youtube for rather than teaching people to memorize stuff note by note you show us how to get that kind of sound while still being original. That’s true musicality. Now I just can’t play things the same way every day. I’m gonna drive a band crazy 😂
You should react to Dead and Company Sugar Magnolia live from Folsom Field, Boulder, CO. 7/14/18. I think it’s one of dead and company’s best sugar magnolias and Mayer is so good at sitting in the song.
I really only began to appreciate John Mayer as a musician and singer because of this channel. Now, I’m a big fan. He’s soulful and hard-driving in equal amounts! A pleasure to watch!
Mike, I just wanted to thank you for getting involved with the Dead. It led me to your channel, and that led me to Guitar Gate. It is the best investment I've ever made. I've been playing for 20 years, but my playing had too many gaps, and I can't play solos yet. After just a few lessons, I'm starting to see how this all works. My playing is going to get so much better now. Great tutorials. Keep up the good work. You're awesome!
Watch all your videos. Rant enjoy all the artists you cover. P.S. please finish up Cornell '77. No sir, you did not do the whole show. Anyways. My favorite channel. Thanks
Great analysis but fun just to watch you enjoy something you know so well …I like How you mentioned “well that’s the point of it” because that really is the point of music like this, to push people’s ears to places they are not expecting, which is the joy of it.
@Michael Palmisano, the headphones were because he started getting ringing in his ears after shows recently, it freaked him out so he switched from pure monitors to headphones and then later he made a comment that he feels more connected with the headphones (noise canceling and over-ear lol). I don't think he ever used in-ears with DnC
Watched the whole thing, I don’t understand music theory to the extent you do, but this was so cool non the less. Thank you for helping everyone to understand the technical passions behind such an epic tune. See you at Fenway!
Love this. Curious if you’ve seen any shows from this summer’s tour. I feel like Mayer has taken it to an even more impressive level! Can’t wait to hear your reaction to the Sugaree at Wrigley. 🤘🏼🎸
After a few of minutes I started to find a scale, not sure which, and several little riffs that sounded similar to John's. I can't play fast so this kind of lesson helps me find simple, melodic phrases to repeat, hopefully increasing my speed over time. It is amazing how great just using the first three strings and frets 8-13 can sound when touching on the melody and following the groove. Thanks for the useful inspiring videos.
Stellar breakdown. I loved it 6 mos ago when I watched it but I wasn't ready for it. Now after some growth on the fretboard which included a guitargate subscription, I had a completely different understanding of your breakdown.
How did I know you would d-ride John in this video? He’s playing blues (as usual) in a non-blues song and that phony SRV singing, ugh! His vocals are so contrived-pure jive, man.
nice videos man, i have so much time whitout play ; i wan to play now. Mayer is a incredible guitar player, i always love this kind of guitar players who generate melodies and not only show speed and skills like in metal hahaha
It's a great composition! Of course Dead & Company are super players. Mayer really gets the groove of the Dead's musical feel. I have seen them live and also the Gratefull Dead in the 70's.
Love this analysis. Mayer is always an amazement. Suggestion for future listen and analysis: Chicago 25 or 6 to 4 Live at Tanglewood 1970 Thanks for your passion and analyses. Cheers
Michael. I think you should start diving into The Mars Volta, especially songs from DeLoused and Frances the Mute. I think you going over all the layers, and Omar Rodriguez guitar compositions would make for a very interesting video. Of course we always want your reaction
Big fan of the channel and the videos, especially the Colter Wall and Tyler Childers videos. I've been working on learning some Waylon Jennings songs, would love to see a reaction video for To Beat the Devil. The song means a lot to me, and I am struggling to find any videos of Waylon's version.
You can find blues roots in almost all genres of music. That is where it all came from. Blues and hillbilly music. Of course Europe had the classical guys. Not a lot documented there in scores. Every 3 years every symphony starts running through them again because there is only so much recorded and scored that got respect.
I know you have tons of reactions in the queue, but Chris Robinson band does a smokin version of this song. Would be interested in hearing your thoughts on the very different guitar approaches
I’m a PT in Asheville. Most tendon injuries are due to overloading. Biking and running is a lot on the patellar tendon. Foam rolling quads and anterior tibialis can help. Hip strengthening is usually good. Loosen up the ankle for Dorsiflexion. Proper loading of the quad is key. And cross training is the most important thing you can do for movement health. Strength training is most important. #CantGoWrongGettingStrong But I’d seriously recommend finding a good local PT to help work on your individual impairments and keep you healthy as you age. Let me know if I can help in anyway.
Mayer is so interesting in that the music that broke him out doesn’t really seem to be his music. And theres like this split fanbase to him between those who know and those WHO KNOW
Hey Michael! Thanks for doing this one - love Dead & Co.'s take on Sugaree! Have you seen: John Mayer Practicing Dead and Company Songs on the Guitar: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3UQqVHrkpxM.html ? Great to listen to John talk about playing the music.
Been to 8 DeadN Company shows and 6 dead shows and there is no comparison... In 2017and 18 DnC had some good shows but nothing compares to the real Dead shows..
He is probably wearing headphones for his monitor mix instead of in ears which can be ambient and some people want but some only want to hear what they want to hear. He can still hear the audience because they put mics up so they can send the crowd reaction into peoples in ears or headsets. Once again not every one wants to hear that. Some performers can walk onstage and do everything they are supposed to and hear the crowd or NOT because they simply have to ask to hear the audience mics in their ears. Nobody would pipe that crowd noise back into a floor monitor.
Hey, why is your guitar looking so f*** good? Even the pickguard seems to stay white. I own the same red silver sky from 2019 and the guitar never looked that good.
