What you need to understand about the whole Vulf "thing", is that it's really all just a sophisticated marketing ploy to sell more fonts. The funk is just a side gig.
I was third row center at Vulf's Madison Square Garden debut in front of Wong, he melted my face off and stapled it back on upside down. He is so beyond amazing and courteous to guests (he was geeking out watching Dave Koz and Chris Thile jam).
I saw Cory Wong with his fonk band last fall in my city. It was in a small, but packed, venue, and he played for 2 hours non-stop. The dude is a machine and while he is amazing with the Vulfpeck, you should see him with his own band, too. They are easily just as good, and I don't say that lightly.
Keeps going on about how they're so well arranged and then talks about "the other guitar player in the short shorts." Welcome to the church of Jack Stratton. :-D
oh to be a new fan and have my mind blown by every video and witness such overpowering genius and not able to identify it's source. I remember at first I couldn't even tell Woody, Jack, and Theo apart! Then you find the "Holy Trinities" videos and the old Mushy videos and the Vulf Compressor promo and it all starts to click.
The "other guitar player" is pretty much the genius behind a lot (not all) of Vulfpeck. Behold, Jack Stratton. In his own words: "Some say polymath, some say dilettante. I specialise in everything. I get Tony Robbins results at TJ Maxx prices." It's funny but not all that surprising that people don't realize he's like the circus ringmaster. It seems he's low key like that, but seriously, I'm a huge fan of his.
Ah yes Joe Dart, of course the most prolific Michigan Slapping Turtle these days. Notice the characteristic elongation of the neck as the head draws in and out of the shell with the beat.
Michael!! Thanks for taking a crack at my request. This totally made my morning! Sipping an iced coffee and about to get in a little practice before kicking off my day. These guys put a big smile on my face every time I listen to them and so do your videos. Stay safe and keep up the great work!
@@rockkevinrock and Russell, agreed, I love that performance. The tone is out of this world and he constantly gives the feel of 3+ players. On a youtube wormhole a while back, I think I remember Blake Mills talking about that modified guitar and I want to say there was some influence by Ry Cooder's Coodercaster.
Great vid Michael! Am Australian and was put onto Vulfpeck about 1.5 years ago and they're like an addiction. So perfect so funky so musical - can't stop listening to them. Loved your little improvs over the progressions and your appreciation and breakdown of this song.
These videos are inspiring me to learn theory. I can see how only 'learning to play songs' without understanding what's going on (for the past 35 years) has held me back so much.
Great video - love to see another musician listening and learning by ear, commenting on theory in a way that enhances understanding of song construction, and showing appreciation for the overall mix. Your pleasure and enjoyment shows!
Any one who’s been to a Cory Wong show will know what this means (comment below. Hint: Serbian folk music) Give me my chipotle Give me my chipotle I want chips I want quac Give me my chipotle ONE!
Love the videos man and definitely love Vulfpeck. Huge fan. When you first started playing I thought “that SS sounds so clean, this will be perfect” then the band played, and I thought “maybe it’s not quite clean enough but it is gonna be super close”. Then you played with them, holy hell, that Silver Sky and whatever you are plugged into sounded so dirty. Lmao. That straight in the desk sound is so different, my ear just doesn’t realize how extreme it is until they are together. Awesome video brother and I’m learning a ton from this. Thanks so much, and as always, much love from Tulsa.
Fantastic vid. Would love to see more Vulfpeck reactions...Fugue State is so tight with a super interesting interlude and the way Joe Dart brings them out of it is worth talking about by itself.
Cory and the others are all from my hometown! Such a funky band, absolutely love it. You should absolutely react to some Tom Misch, I would love to see that
9:26 that is still such a face melting bass fill from Joe Dart. I long to get the same feeling I had when I heard that for the 1st time. The stank face was absolutely unreal that day...
The day I subscribe to GuitarGate is the day you drop some Corey Wong, and more importantly some Vulfpeck. As a bass player at heart and a guitarist by desire, Vulfpeck is as good as it gets.
Loving your "reacts to" stuff! You've done a few of my favorite artists, Ian Thornley (Big Wreck), Corey Wong (Vulfpeck), and plenty more. I'd love to see you do a reacts to Richie Kotzen, whether with The Winery Dogs or his solo stuff...he's one of those under the radar guys that blows people away when they give him a chance, and it'd be fun to watch you break him down.
Somehow this came back around on my feed, which is great. And as I was listening to it, I thought (for the first time) "Steely Dan." There's a bunch of stuff in there that sounds like outtakes from a Steely Dan rehearsal. Maybe it's the electric piano. Or the sweet guitar with Corey channeling Skunk Baxter? I dunno, but I wanted to start singing "Hey 19" or something over it.
Man, of the probably thousands of guitar related RU-vid videos I’ve watched, you stand alone. You have an amazing ability of breaking things down in a way that is understandable but not too simple. Also, your visible passion for guitar and music never fails to inspire me and make me smile. I recently moved back to my hometown of Phoenix after pursuing music in Nashville for 6 years and am currently trying to get back on my feet financially. Once I do, though, a subscription to all your stuff is at the very top of my list. You can count on that. Thank you so much for all the free content in the meantime, and I can’t wait to be able to learn even more from you in the future. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so so much and keep up the good work!
Hey! Looking into buying your class. I’m interested in getting better at soloing, I can jam pretty good to any song in any pentatonic scale, but feel like I’m getting bored of playing the same licks all the time. Is there a lesson you would suggest starting at in your program that would suggest me starting at? I’ve played for about 6 years, would say I have basic to intermediate knowledge of theory and mainly like playing classic rock, jam band, funk, and jazz. Appreciate all the work you do. Your videos have helped me a lot. I the and learn what your doing by ear and sight a lot of the time, but don’t understand the theory behind it! Sorry for the long post🤙🏽🤙🏽
I love Vulfpeck. Killer stuff and Cory is a funk master. That bass player is killer. Cory gets a lot of props because he is the face of the band, but they all lay it down.
Well, wasn't THIS just filled with all kinda stank funk?! "Yeah, ok. I'm trackin' ya, I'm trackin'ya!" Great analysis (and lesson to those who speak guitarese) Thank you.. for the funky start to my day!
