Pro tip: When opening your amazon packages break the whole box down flat and fill one big box with all the flattened cardboard boxes you get. It makes for less clutter and they'll actually collect it on recycling day.
Bonus tip: Don't over stuff so tightly the cardboard won't fall out when inverted over the truck. I've done that twice. The first time they put the still full can back down, the second, they just dropped the whole bin into the truck and took it too! Took me 2 weeks to get a new one!
He made the choice of joining Poison as they were considered a joke and kinda the epitome of Everything the Seattle bands were " Fighting" against. So I think he got labelled as a " hair metal" guy and a " shredder " to us guitar nerds , not a recipe for cool points in that era. I honestly didn't know he sang till The Winery Dogs as I stopped thinking about him by the time he left Poison and became a solo artist, I had seen his Shred instructional video but that's it. My mind was blown away by his voice and talent , I always knew he was a awesome guitar player but had no idea he has one of the best voices in Rock. At least he is getting attention these days, he should be FAR more popular but we live in a world that HORRENDOUS modern Hip Hop and Strippers disguised as pop stars " singing" about the moisture of they're lady parts.......talent sadly isn't important to people these days.
Hey man I love these videos! I’d love to take lessons from you but I fear I wouldn’t make the progress because I should be in special education for music theory. My eyes gloss over every time I hear you talking about going to the third. Any way to become a better musician while working around that deficiency in my brain?
This is indeed the Power Trio of this generation. I have always thought the Billy Sheehan overplayed, but I realize that he's doing a lot of that to fill up the space. Mad respect for his skill set. Richie is simply a force of nature! One of the greatest vocalists of all time, and his guitar work is 2nd to none. And what can you say about Portnoy that hasn't already been said. A true master.
Richie is the MVP! Top tier on guitar and vocals ... It must have been hard to be in Poison. They sold albums, but Richie had about 10 x more talent than the rest of that band combined!
Kotzen is so good, been listening to him since about ‘90 I think. Great job. I think this is my new favorite of yours, driving home why each musician in the band is important is great stuff to hammer.
RIchie Kotzen is roundly ignored by so many people when they talk about their most revered guitarists, which is a real shame. The man has some serious chops - up there with the best - yet finds himself gravitating towards the more melodic blues rock. Here's a man who can shred, who can handle any technique and any lick, yet allows his songs to breathe, plays the rests, and can play his solos like he was singing them. I hate to use the term "underrated", as it's so often misused, but this man is truly underrated and underappreciated.
He is amazing, both vocals and guitar! I actually have the Richie Kotzen signature pedal by Tech 21 called the RK5, it sounds great and is basically all he uses live himself
Portnoy is undeniably a master of his craft. Whether it's a crazy polyrhythm or a simple groove he knows what to do and when to do it. No wonder Ringo Starr is an influence of his. What Ringo does isn't overly complicated but he knows what is best for the song and the performance.
As a 40-year guitarist, I absolutely LOVE the way you break things down. Just hearing you explain the chord progression completely opened up the fretboard for improv and understanding the thread of the progression. Thanks for what you do. I love learning new things every day
To think Richie was In poison for a bit, wayyy too talented for poison, Billy is just a master on bass, can’t say enough about him and his playing and portnoy, what a three piece band, these guys rock
This is one of the best musical reactions ever. I really appreciate your depth of knowledge and, more importantly, your appreciation for the music and talent of others. GREAT stuff!!!
Bro, just wanted to say this. I haven't signed up for Guitargate classes yet.....yet being the operative word there. But I've learned so much, and continue to learn so much, from your video's. Seriously. I'm not just blow'in smoke. Always picking up useful, relevant stuff from your teachings. I don't want to get all mushy, so thank you.
Billy explained in a video about his style; he says it was partially due to when he was starting out and making very little money that if he could create a fuller sound on stage with fewer players they would each take home more money.
@@jamesbrady8535 behind the beat has nothing to do with overplaying. His performance is terrible here. Listen to the original version of the song and nothing about the bass performance stands out, as it shouldn’t. The original bass player locks in with the drums and doesn’t turn it into the “bass guitar show.” People aren’t paying money to hear a bass guitar solo in a ballad. He’s overplaying BADLY for such a seasoned professional. He’s better than this.
Kotzen's been one of my favorite musicians since i was introduced to him by a friend's band covering "Doin' what the devil says to do" in 2010. Since then i had the opportunity to see him live 7 times (1 of those with the Dogs), as he often came to Argentina up until the pandemic. I have to say tho i've seen docens of other world renowned bands in huge arenas, Kotzen's still in my podium of live performers, always with the same immaculate singing and playing, as well as some incredible backing musicians to not only support but play alongside his talent. It's truly been an amazing experience every time i've seen him live.
Ive seen winery dogs live and richie solo both live and man the tightness of both bands live is just breath taking...richie vocals and guitar playing duo is just next level
Hey, im down the street from you. Thanks for your review, it lead me to some amazing talent. Im a fan of dt, ive seen mr big a few times, but man, ritchie! I had never heard of him, your review has led to an incredible musical investigation of this amazing rare talent. Thank you.
I love how, going into the first chorus, Billy signals to Mike that "Richey sings alone on this one." One of my favorite live performances, right now, is Blackbird by Alter Bridge LIVE in Amsterdam. Of course, Myles' voice is insanely good, but the solo handoff from Kennedy to Tremonti (Bluesy to more shreddy) is excellent. And I love the volume swell touches that Myles puts in here and there.
I saw Billy playing with DLR and Steve Vai for the Eat Em and Smile tour, it was pretty epic. At one point Steve started playing eruption, Billy walks over and slaps his hand over Vai's strings, silencing him, then launches into it on his bass, and they went back and forth tearing into the solo. Dave had a boxing ring set up in the middle of the floor so even people at the back could enjoy the show, iirc that's where he went to the edge, stood and looked down... it really was a great show, Dave was pulling out all the stops, wanted to make people say, Van Halen who?
Why did I only just discover this guy? I am getting smarter every video! I need to start breaking stuff down more like him, I usually just want to play it haha and don’t get the chance.
"I'm going too the second, because we were in F, and it resolves of course to C, which then is the 5 which goes to the 1 which is F"! Mr. Palmisano, unfortunately i had an aneurysm trying to follow along. I will fully admit i'm knew to the channel. I think i have watch 90% of your vids in about a weeks span, and am lost 90% of the time. All though i have dabbled with guitar for about 12 years, and know almost all chords and can play songs so so, with chord progressions, I have come to realize i am feeble child at guitar. Going to do my very best to learn this shit, because not knowing is maddening!
I’m going to try to simplify the language I use. I watched this again and I was way overly verbose. It’s not just an issue on your end, I can assure you sir!!
@@Guitargate Please don't think take my comment as captious, or over critical. I love your vids! I think, by being verbose, while it may make a listener like myself feel like a bit of an outsider, or intimidated, it gives you a drive to learn this stuff. The fault lies mostly with myself, and my lack of education on the topic. I think i will def be signing up for some of your lessons! But if you have any wisdom you'd like to part on us "casual players" in your vids, I'm a sponge! Thanks for you comment and videos man! keep them coming!
I'm in the same boat haha right about a decade of playing, only seriously for about a year though. As much as I'm lost, your excitement, Michael, is fantastic to watch. I'm back in university so my play time has fallen but these videos still help me learn. Thanks man.
I just like the fact I've found a community of people who share a similar taste in music and share in their stories and also recommend other artists and tracks. There are some brillant musicians I would otherwise never have known thanks to this channel. Its given me great joy personally.
Great explanation of an amazing performance. Man, there's so much too learn from this. Might be my favorite song breakdown that I've ever seen. Great work!
So - I don't understand a ding-dang thing about what you're talking about, Kind Sir, but... your true appreciation & enthusiasm is absolutely *contagious* and unbelievably *riveting* !! Well done!! As it happens, I fell down a wee bit of a rabbit hole & watched your Marcus King review (Wildflowers & Wine)... which led me to this video. And, sure - I know what a "guitar" is (lol), but that's about it... And yet, I watched the entirety of *BOTH* videos. Lovely day, Sir!
That is actually the reverse of Billy's sound. Billy EQs with the mids up, the lows and highs down in sort of an upwards facing parabola. I think what happen with whoever mixed the audio of this video, is that they had a raw direct feed of Billy's bass, that bypassed his own EQ settings, and they went with a default scoop out the mids, downward facing parabola. So that is why you hear all that 'swishing'. But listen to any other recordings of Billy, or youtubes, or see him live, his tone does not sound like this. I got to play this song with Richie (me on bass) at Winery Dogs camp (10 years ago)
Such a great song originally... I love it when a band can turn something I am so familiar with into a new discovery. Faith No More did the same thing with "Easy"... timeless song done masterfully different.
Richie Kotzen is a truly brilliant guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist. Portnoy is the hearbeat of the Winery Dogs. Sheehan fills the sound, but I feel his bass noodling and tone in this video is way off what the song needs. Some other Winery Dogs stuff it works perfectly though
@Ken OKeefe i'm still not sure what you mean i've seen him live a few times and he's great to watch. His stage persona fits him perfectly energetic not like most bass players sitting at the back looking depressed to be there.
I’ve been a working professional guitar player for 30+ years. I’ve Been following your channel for a while now and love all your stuff. this is such a great breakdown of this song. Well done sir. Fantastic job. Keep up the great work.
To think I first heard Richie on his Shrapnel instrumental album back in the late 80s when he was still a teenager....what a progression and career. Glad to see he's finally receiving the exposure and accolades that he's deserved all along IMO. He had a lot of years releasing solo albums without much exposure (I am working my way through them after only having his early mostly instrumental releases). As much as I wish he would've returned to the limelight from wherever he's been hiding, I have to thank John Sykes for passing on the project that became the Winery Dogs. Sheehan and Portnoy pivoted to Richie and here we are.
As a drummer, I like your assessment of the drummer when playing live music.... 😎😜 Great song , Great band!!!! Really like the first album they did. Saw them in Atlanta, really good show.
Damn right, the drummer is Key! I've played 3 piece for some long time, as the guitarist in 2 bands, the drummer is it. (Unfortunately not playing any more.)
Michael, your breakdown of this performance is brilliant and very helpful to me as a beginning guitarist (at 67yo,) but I was a little disappointed to not hear a peep about Elvin Bishop's song writing and brilliant guitar work on the original, or Mickey Thomas' apparently effortless vocals. They've been one of my standards of excellence in rock music since 1975!
You need to liston to Elvin Bishop's solo. It is essentially the basis of this performance. I learned this tune years ago from Elvin Bishop not to denigrate the Winery Dogs. This a really great performance.
Ohhh, you have the guitar Kanami Tono plays (dye color anyway) . Nice. It's fun to watch someone love what they're doing so much, and you can hear it in your descriptions and explanations.
One of the best live bands I have ever seen (I have been to over 400 concerts). Of course that's one of the benefits of over 15 years working in the radio biz...
Great reaction. I love Portnoy and the Dogs, but seeing the pure joy of watching them made my day. Also, I did not notice it before but now I cannot ignore Billy’s tone anymore.
Most EXCELLENT review Sir. Thank you. My everyday music. This is the best there is currently, maybe ever for a three piece. Richie is 1000% . Your descriptions are great. I'm a drummer 56yo but I'll be back. Thanks again
Hey Mike! You need to try out Darrell Scott “River take me” live from Music Fogs page. He’s so underrated, wrote a ton of songs made famous by others and something about this song is awesome. Hope you see this and give a listen.
I only recently discovered this band (and Richie), have always been a DT fan... I feel dumb. This band is so freaking amazing and your commentary is spot on. Great Great band. Joe Bonamasa is my favorite guitar player, but Richie Kotzen may be right up there at number 2! He's that good. (And a much better singer, lol)
Check out this Tyler Childers song if you’re wanting another murder ballad. I know you dig them! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bwmbI4_rmgg.html Mike - Fellow Balt. Resident
I know this is an old video but if you want to see some of the best live rock footage available, do a video on Richie’s 2015 live in Japan concert. Check out the opening number or look for “Fooled Again”. It’s just Richie and his solo band. Just three guys kicking ass for an hour.
Not sure if you've seen Martin Miller's session videos, but they do some amazing covers with awesome guests (Timmons, Paul Gilbert, etc) Love this cover of Purple Rain: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Po99AdWQK68.html
I've watched this video hundreds of times, double tapped 10sec back thousands on various parts. The breakdown where the band stops and the crowd claps, I can TOTALLY understand why it happened, but Holy balls are they not liken shall step quick?!?! Or am I counting wrong? Their timing is even breaking apart worse on every clap! Am I not hearing that properly?
So Billy, we’re doing this bluesy iconic song, super soulful…. Gotcha Ritchie, I’ll use a fuzz, and a synth sound with an auto wahwah on the bass. And will play every note throughout … I’ll allow it. It’s Billy FN Sheehan
Thanks much! I was nodding like a bobblehead. I suppose I got to this from listening to them on YT. I don't think I've seen one of your videos before. I'm a long time player and there were at least 2 points that condensed things I've known. I appreciate these guys a ton, though a lot of their material isn't quite to my liking. I grew up listening to this tune and have always loved it. Like you said: "you can see how much they like it.." That brings me to the best part - your reactions were great. Thank you. So many great points.. And, they did a great tune proud.
Mike....I love your channel....but I must say you drew attention to the drummer when Richie walked right by us all with his runs....a bit of a cop out maybe...lol. Don't worry, no one else had a clue how absorb what we just heard. Richie is well above a sneak peak within a single vid.
I don't know if it's better, but in the ballpark: check out Grace Potter cover Cortez The Killer with Joe Satriani ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-paeNnR33i5Q.html
Love your videos, we need more Richie content. You need to check out his live in Sao Paulo - the whole concert is amazing but these three for me are probably the greatest live performances ever - High / Faith / Remember. Have a listen, you won't regret it. Cheers!
if you like Richie please do yourself a favor and check out this live cover of Burn by Mr. Big. He totally shreds that tele. You also can't forget Billy playing Jon Lord's organ parts on bass. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NCu-bPrguUc.html
