Great review once again, Justin. Love it. Funny you mentioned "the Poison guy" when talking bandanas. The reason I started listening to Richie Kotzen was because he joined Poison in 1992 and played on probably their best album "Native Tongue". I think he was kicked out a year later for an affair with the drummers missus. How rock n roll! Regardless, I was then a follower of Richie right through his solo stuff, his stint in Mr. Big, his band Forty Deuce and now Winery Dogs. Met him at a showcase gig for Cornford Amplifiers in Whitstable 20 years ago with Stevie Salas. Really friendly and personable chap. Amazing guitarist and singer to boot. Keep up the great content. Strewth. He sounds so much like Chris Cornell it is scary!! Then again the whole band is on another level. Billy Sheehan's playing is ridiculously effortless also. I love Justin's appreciation of musicianship. I mean, he is such an accomplished, superb guitarist himself, but when he sees and hears something that he likes and appreciates he does not hold back, have any airs and graces and speaks like a fan. He then proceeds to explains WHY he likes it so much and WHY it is so good. One of the things I love about you sir. I also love it when you say something is just shite!! 😁

I remember hearing some Poison in the early '90s and thinking that CC must've been practicing and getting better, not realizing it was Ritchie.

Richie is the best rock singer and guitarist going and has been for some time now. He never hits a bad note on guitar and singing. And he's 10x better live too. Nice dude too.

Richie Kotzen can do no wrong in my eyes. What a fantastic talent and thoroughly nice bloke. TWD put on an amazing show and I can't wait to see them rocking again this summer in the UK.

Have been fortunate to see them twice now and their playing is absolutely mind-blowing. The things about bot times that also stood out is how much fun they have together. Next to seeing Rush multiple times I have not seen a more cohesive talented trio (really band) in my life, and this a kinda of a side project. They are individually arguably the best in the world for their respective instrument. Thanks for highlighting such an amazing group. They should be way more popular than they are. I've gotten to see the Winery Dogs twice live, once a week after their first album came out in a small little club and again after III came out in a theater. Richie Kotzen is the legit real deal and absolutely brilliant guitarist blessed with an amazing voice. Got to see Kotzen on a solo tour in a small club too near where he is from in the Pennsylvania. Everytime he left me just leveled by his performance!!!

GREAT BAND! Ritchies guitar playing is as you said incredible, always with feel, melody and sits in the song, nothing worse than a solo that feels like it was recorded for something else and dropped in because it was in key but doesn't fit the feel of the song. And the fecker can sing too!!!!! 🙂

Richie’s voice is getting better and better as he get older. To the point sometimes I forget the incredible guitar player he is.

Saw the band recently in Glasgow, they were absolutely immense, I would encourage anyone with an interest in Rock to go and see them (and I am 70), three of the best musicians around.

Imagine if Kotzen actually smiled or at least pretended he was happy to be in the band instead of looking like he lost a bet.

The best! Saw them in February and they were incredible. Saw Richie 2x last October. Never disappoints. Phenomenal talent. I describe him as Chris Cornell on steroids; more soul and bluesy.

In a great band, the sum is greater than the total of the parts. This is not a great band. The sum is something less than the total of the parts. And would probably be better with a different Bass player. Sheehan always falls flat post DLR. The talent is there, but the songs just lack something, as they do with most of his projects (Mr. Big, Sons Of Apollo). I'm 50 years old. I'm not as full of piss and vinegar as I was 30 years ago, but I'm not dead yet. I can enjoy a lot of their tracks, the talent of the musicians is undeniable. The songwriting and vocals by Kotzen, as always are top shelf. But the songs just aren't....great. They're good. At the end of the day they're more Adult Contemporary than Hard Rock...more like something on AM radio back in the day. They're an updated version of the band Everclear, with more talented musicians. I'll take KXM over Winery Dogs as a relatively new "super group" trio. Dug Pinnick (Kings X), Ray Luzier (Korn, Army Of Anyone, David Lee Roth, Steel Panther), and George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob). Again, the songs aren't GREAT but at least there is some edge to them.

My problem with this is how un-edgy it is. It's like The Eagles of hard rock, has all the required elements of a classic rock band with plenty of interesting things to analyse. However, once you put it all together to make the complete song it just ends up a bit boring. You say they're in cruise mode, but to me that's synonymous with mediocrity. It's very middle of the road. There's just nothing that makes me go "Wow, this really needs to exist right now."

Hadn’t come across this remarkable band before this review; what a find! Sadly, whilst singing along in the car, I substituted ‘Grapefruit’ for ‘Breakthrough’ and it’s now stuck in my head forever 😢

This has zero to do with this video, but felt compelled to comment anyway. I'm from the States and knew one of your songs- make that LOVED it! I started watching your reactions and realized you were the singer. Since then, I have watched you sing live (recently, too) and, man oh man! You are bloody amazing. You are now in my top male vocalist list. 😅 I love how I can hear your accent on some words (swooning over your accent anyway. I have the Southern Belle accent and want yours) when you sing. Your range is incredible and I hear Freddy Mercury (highest compliment I can give anyone) but also such a distinctive sound of your own. Just wanted to let you know. And we need more rock music like this nowadays. I'm unimpressed by most new music.

I admittedly haven't watched but I submit my initial response: Yes, King's X.

Those three guys just kill it. And I have been saying that Richie sounds like Chris Cornell for a long time. I'm proud to say that Richie grew up around my area and it turns out that his parents are friends with my in-laws. And I have been a big fan of Mr. Big so I'm a big Billy Sheehan fan. People just don't realize the amount of talent in the Winery Dogs!

They are a band I really want to see. In fact, I just finished this video and booked tickets to see them at Shepherd's Bush Empire in June - result!

Watching Portnoy play with Transatlantic (another band of virtuosos) I noticed how little grandstanding these guys do. It's there when they need it but it's not in your face. The concert opens with Portnoy on lead vocals which is quite a revelation.

Apparently you never heard of Animals As Leaders.

To see Richie's vocal abilities I suggest you listening to his album "Acoustic cuts".

Trios are often brilliant, like Cream, The Police. Some sounds are better with three, each instrument stands out and compliments others. Notwithstanding, an awesome rhythm guitar though completes a lot of bands 🎸
