Seriously loving this album. Digital Man from Rush off of Signals is another beautiful well composed song. Going to be checking out more of the earlier stuff here soon but had to give this one a listen after listening to The Analog Kid.

@Scott Shields, I had some friends around this time who weren’t that keen on Rush but there was one album that grabbed them. But it would be a different one. I recall someone being hooked on Signals, another on Grace Under Pressure... Personally I considered Signals to be a bit below par, despite the fact it has some of my favourite Rush songs on it! I think this is because it followed the mighty Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.
@scottshields113
@scottshields113 3 года назад
@@kevinmcfarlane2752 It's the mix of Signals that got killed, it has a dull feel. If you listen to Moving Pictures which is so crisp, the drums alone are night and day in the mix sound. Signals got too muddied in the mix for me. But tinkering with a good equalizer does help. They definitely took a plunge off a cliff in a new direction, but I love the songwriting, of the synth period it's a lower ranking album for me. But for nostalgia being my intro it's still special

Another great example of how Rush could play any style of music and sound so tight and energetic at the same time. Love the bass lives throughout and Neil’s groovy drum fills. At first listen you feel Alex was left out a little but then he brings a very unique and killer guitar solo. You’re not going to find three better musicians collectively in a single band.

Love this song. I'm a drummer and this was always one of the most fun Rush songs to play from the opening riff, ska feel time, cool fills and little cowbell flourishes. RIP Neil Peart, u were an inspiration and will never be forgotten. When I hear this song, it makes me think a lot of The Police. Alex was playing a lot of New Wave riffs, they mixed in some reggae grooves, and just seem to have fun with it. That bass groove though.. What I haven't heard you comment on yet, OLS, are the transitions. Rush I think mastered those smooth transitions into bridges and alternate time signatures like true wizards. There are certainly underrated gems in Rush's discography, but I'm glad someone is finally posting up reaction videos of their deeper tracks!

One of the best songs I've heard from Rush, and Geddy's bassline is just straight up fire! Although this song was what broke the camel's back for the band's long time producer Terry Brown, as he initially refused to have this song onto the album. This would be his last album he produced with Rush. I'm not sure if you listened to The Police, but one of their songs Walking On The Moon was the inspiration to Digital Man, especially in the middle section on both songs. There are similarities, but not enough for Rush to "rip off" The Police. Although Rush is inspired by The Police with their sound. Great reaction for a great song!

This album was the first album where they really incorporated a lot of keyboards into their rhythm section. Geddy wanted to go in that direction. Neil was very open about his fascination with Stewart Copeland and the police and the reggae and African rhythms. Alex was struggling trying to figure out how he still fit into the band! All things considered, a pretty cool noise overall.

There is a theme to the album. Subdivisions is about youth in society being divided into groups with dreams of something more in life. Some "sell their dreams for small desires" and wind up in a 9 to 5 job. Analog Kid is about the "restless dreams". "A bright and aimless vision has him longing to depart" Chemistry is about interactions in society being like chemistry between people. Digital Man is about being current with information looking forward but dreaming of getting away. Losing It is about people who had the opportunity to live their dreams but lost their gifts and inspiration. Their dreams are of the past. The Weapon is about how some people use fear as a weapon. Countdown is about people coming together to make a dream a reality.

😷People use to always criticize Rush for not being more spontaneous/improvisational however I always thought bands that were jam based like that, were that way because they had to be and couldn’t really nail a structure or performance note for note, night after night like Rush could. Several other bands were great at reproducing live what they put down on tape, but let’s face facts, I think more were not, and just capable of coming close enough for the general audience to be entertained.🤘🖖✌️🎸🎹🥁🎤

80's Rush blows 70's Rush away and it's not even close. 70's was very proggy and experimental for sure, but also more inaccessible from a songwriting/vocal standpoint. All Rush is great, but the 80's is when it all came together. Starting with Permanent Waves.
