Today I react to Subdivisions by Rush. This song hit me and made me realize I don't want to give in to the pressure of being "Normal".
Too many people lose their dreams and give up their goals for fear of being different or of failure.

I agree Rachelle P I think that, Kid Gloves, maybe War Paint (not so good, but still teen-oriented IMO) but The Pass could have been the Adolescence Duology Part II. I believe Geddy and Neil and Alex said The Pass is one of their favorite compositions of all time (search net on this).

Rush was blessed to have one of the greatest bass players if not the greatest in Rock probably the greatest drummer ever and one of the most complex lyricists of all time. Not to mention a fabulous guitar player in Alex lifeson as well.

I am 50. I was introduced to Rush in junior high school thru this song. They understood me better then my parents teachers or any other adults at the time it seemed. At 50, I still think the same. I think the late Mr. Rogers said keep putting yourself in the age of those who you council. Dont "outgrow", or forget what it was like when YOU were that age.

Especially those of us who were in HS (and I supposed even middle school) when it came out. But I think this song speaks to everyone. Even kids who others thought were "popular" in school will eventually experience feeling like outcasts at some point in their lives, it's part of the human condition. How strongly the messages in this song resonate with each individual depends on that person.
@toddstevens13
@toddstevens13 3 года назад
Ahhh but the "Cast Out" always outnumbered the Cool, but most did not get it. I was a Cast Out, ran for Social Convenor, and my speech was one line long. Remember we out number the Cools, the Jocks, etc., so lets send them a message. Was up against the Oldest Daughter of the Speaker of the House in the Federal Government. Won in a landslide. The next year we ran a whole slate of Cast Outs, all repeated the same one Line, and swept the Election and made the school a Cast Out Zone. Damn was it fun, and RUSH played every lunch time in the Cafeteria.

The song after this on the Signals album is awesome. Analog kid. It just nails that tween wanderlust that I think all of us remember from that age, when you just want to escape and get on with life.

Great reaction! Neil Peart was an incredible poet as well as drummer.He had that ability to take on some very deep subject matter and somehow keep it simple ,relateable and beautiful simultaniously. I hope youll do more 80s Rush...the stuff after this album, Signals, doesnt get anywhere near the attention it deserves. Its some of the bands best work both musically and lyrically and its filled with thoughtful songs like this. Try Middletown Dreams, Grand Designs, or Emotion Detector from Power Windows.(an album of songs relating to various manifistations of power. Also, an album that Alex Lifeson really liked contrary to popular belief. Signals is where he found himself compeating for frequency space with the keyboards) Or any number of songs from Hold Your Fire (As in hold on to your dreams...the theme of this album was human instinct). Grace Under Preasure and Presto are both great too. Anyway, Thanks and keep up the good work!

Good to have you back !!!! Keep Rushing !!!! There is one band I would love you to react to. It's an other obscure Canadian band that really kicks ass. They are called : The Tea Party. Here are 3 songs for you to chose from to start it off : Fire in the head - Temptation - Sister Awake. So far, I've made the recommendation to a couple of other people reacting to Rush and there response was great and many viewers have commented that they want to hear more of that band so.... Now I offer it to you! The singer and guitarist crafted some of his instruments and he is a true genius. Please check them out !!!!!!

Not only is this the greatest song of all time, but there is so much more to this song than meets the eye. I personally know several people who have done their Ph.D. theses on RUSH and this song specifically. Aside from its OBVIOUS meaning (i.e. people who are not considered "cool" or "popular" being cast out from society), there is actually a "double meaning" to this song. The secondary meaning is the irony of people from the big city wanting to escape to where there is peace and quiet (i.e. the suburbs) yet the people from the suburbs want the "action" and want to go down to the big city to find it/experience it. Hence, we have subdivisions socially as well as geographically. It's almost the "flip side of the coin" kind of song. The more you listen to it, the more you appreciate its many, many layers and (as always) magnificent musicianship by the greatest band of all time. Not my opinion, but simply a fact of life.

Rush can provide you with almost anything except boredom. For more seriously thought provoking lyrics, do try out “Nobody’s Hero,” off of their “Counterparts” album. The studio album is on RU-vid as well as a few live ones. I recommend the 1997 live version from the Molson Amphitheater in Toronto. “Cold Fire” is another deeper cut from the same album and is in that same show. If you don’t care for those live songs, try the official videos.

Signals is the 3rd in a trilogy of albums that I would class as ,arguably, the best 3 consecutive albums ever released....by anyone. Permanent Waves , Moving Pictures and Signals were a big shift away from their 70's sound. Many fans didn't like it ( at first) but over the years these 3 albums would be classed as their 3 finest. You need to check out all 3 and react to Camera Eye , Limelight and Jacobs Ladder. But in truth u need to listen to Every track 😀

Signals was the last great Rush album produced by Terry Brown and it sounds like it. I don't know what came over this trio to go get a Madonna or boyd george producer out of England who had never heard of Rush to come replace Terry? WTH? looking back that was a very stupid move by Rush. And I say that as a 40 long years fan of the band. Grace Under Pressure album didn't sound as good as Signals n was a dark album. They went down the hill but their genius saved them n again they shined on.... Thank you for posting n sharing your thoughts.

Don't take this wrong but I think you are missing the basic sound/meaning to what they are doing. Every note any of the three play is purposeful to the mood of the part of the song they are playing. Ted Nugent can jam as good as anyone but that is all he is doing is jamming. Love Ted's music even in Damn Yankees but it is not at the level of Alex. All three of them play every note matching the mood of the song they are playing. You not only hear the song but you can feel it too.
