Which was your favourite combination? And what genre did the 10" speakers shine in?

Lovely video, Paul. Not only are the speaker samples/combinations sounding great (we thank you), there's some excellent information about selecting the right cabinet, which, as we know, is crucial. Sweet!

I bought half a year ago a '65 Princeton RI with Alnico Gold already installed, sounds lovely, and with the Gold being 98db sensitivity, compared to factory Jensen being 94db, it gives practically more than twice the wattage!

The gold is a really cool choice for Fender combos, I've had the 12" version in out twin before and that worked great. Thanks for watching.

The Green & gold sounded just ace for my ears, very well defined in higher gain and chimey in cleans.

Glad you like them... that is generally the most common mix of 10s that we do.

10s are a really personal speaker and I have to admit, I change my mind all the time as to which my favourites are. Thanks for watching, glad you like it.

I had liked to hear the different speakers alone too. But ok! I am not the biggest fan of neither the G10M, G10 Vintage or G10 Gold, in comparison with the 12" versions. But, as little, as I like the G12 Creambacks,, as much I started liking the G10 CB. This one has a very unique voicing, for a 10" speaker an awesome bass, maybe even too much and a very unique character, which one likes or not. For me it is an excellent high-gain speaker, especially in a 210 or 410 closed back, so a serious alternative to the typical 412. 10" speakers anyway are something strange, differ a lot from 12" speakers, but in a 210 cabinet they really can do a good job, but they still sound much better than 8" speakers. In a 410 even more. Although I preferred a 1210 closed back. Combines the best of both worlds better for my taste. Or a 212210, 112210, 212110,... (Unfortunately such custom made cabinets are not cheap, so I usually only mix them with IR's for myself.) As single speakers the G10M sounds a little but too muffled for me, the G10 Vintage too thin, I miss the bass and the Gold is not even in 12" size one of my favorites. Unfortunately my favorite 10" Celestion is missing here, the VT-Junior. Has for me the best and most balanced all-round-sound, in a 210 cabinet I combined it with the G10 Creamback and I think, the results covered everything between clean and high-gain nicely. But in combination I also could imagine to combine the G10 Vintage with the G10 Creamback instead for a tighter, but still punchy tone. A 210 cabinet is for me the perfect match for a 15W (or lower wattage) amp, usually sounds fuller bodied than an 112 and is not as big as a 212. I think, I start liking this channel! Not the typical farmer trapping, but more serious and informative. Thank you! Just an idea: What about releasing some Zilla IR's additionally?

That's hilarious, during the clean demo I thought "they've nicked Tom Quayle's lick" haha... just to hear you mention that he was part of the demo. For me the one with the Vintage sounded the best, but maybe that's just because it was brighter.

It’s a great day when you see a new video coming from you guys. I will definitely need to watch it at least one more time on my PC to make sure that what I hear is good. For now I have to say that strangely I like them all. Maybe the gold and greenback meets the best my expectations of what I would like to own. Though each combination would fit some amplifier and some player definitely. Creamback and Greenback has that middle and warm tone. Considering how I grew away from the V30 in 12” 16 Ohm China build especially, I am liking the tone of 10” version. Not that peaky/spikey and very good in the mix with gold. Even Gold sounds warmer than 12” version to me. Now I have to admit that I have no 10” speakers in my test setup. I just can’t have it all. Currently I have like 3 1x12, 3 2x12, 1 1x15, 1 4x12 and few 8” combos, 3 1x12 combos and 2x12 combo. From those again most of them are Celestion speakers. Few Jensen’s and Eminence from Fender combo. I use to test new amplifier builds with all possible speakers but lately as soon as I hear it on one of my reference setups I know pretty good what to expect. Then I have to check it out does it become overbearing with speakers I do not prefer myself as well but people will have those. That’s for part of judging how it sounds and what needs to be changed eventually. Rest of the testing is more for my enjoyment and burn in process making sure that amplifier can work for hours and be thermally stable. I also bring my amplifiers to friends who are professional players and let them use their cabinets and hear their opinions. But by that point I am sure that amplifier model is 99 percent finished. Funny thing is that even my perception of speakers changes over time even with the same amplifiers. Some speakers that fit standard factory of the shelf amplifiers just do not work as good with some boutique amplifiers. Often some speakers that are darker sound completely different on such amplifiers and then they show their actual rich texture that was not coming true on some other amplifiers. Some stay weak though. Though even those can be used great in the combination with something else. My long lasting love for Alnico speakers took some limitations as well. Now for some type of music I can’t recommend them at all. Maybe in the mix with some ceramic magnet speaker but not in the isolation. It really highly depends on volume/ power they are used at and the level of the gain. From certain gain level Alnico speakers just stop being superior even for me who loves them the most. In last decades with starting to use two different amplifiers at the same time even without wet dry concept I have noticed the magic of mixing different types of speakers. I have explained it to my self that they complimented each other just like the middle position on the Les Paul does. Then I understood I could actually mix speakers in the same cabinet even different power and sensitivity and that all what matters is subjective result. Technician in me was saying no but results said yes. Who cares that Creamback H and Creamback M have different sensitivity and power handling when they sound awesome together? For me they sound more that simple addition of properties and sound of each of them alone. Some magic happens. At some point I was only about parallel speaker connection in 2x12 cabinets. Voice coil inductance will affect the other speaker. So what if the result is sounding good to you? So now only reference is how does it sound. Plus dealing with point to point amplifiers mostly, 8 Ohm speaker versions became more favorable choice. The proof is in the pudding. If it works with your gear and your playing that’s all that matters. Forget about trends.

Thanks mate that's really kind of you. I flip on my favourite 10s all the time, it also depends on what they are going in too. There's some great comments there.

Haven't done this myself but in a metalmix, mix in some tracks with 10" Speakers, would add a 3d dimension to the sound. Correct me if I think wrong

Did you listen to the slightly heavier tracks? It's a bit easier to spot when there's a bit more gain.
