If you get your gun fitted it's one less thing to blame for missing. My gun hasn't fitted for years.

I got taught a great way to fit a gun for drop that's always worked for me. Tape a straw to the top or the rib, a bit like having a rear sight, then close your eyes. Bring the gun back up to your natural shooting position with your eyes closed and then open them. If the gun is set right for drop then you should be looking through the straw and to the front sight. If its set to low then you will be looking over the straw and vice versa.

Great straightforward advice, I used to shoot a little Winchester 101 twenty bore it was short for me but I shot like a demon with it. Few years later lost a fair bit of weight lost confidence in the gun so decided to have it fitted to me after shooting next to someone who had had his fitted by the same guy. I'm not going to mention his name but he did make a great job of it but now it's worse than ever to long in the stock 😞 now it stays in the cabnet ,bought myself an mk60 hp witch on the right day I shoot pretty well. I'm not blaming the guy that done the work on my gun I just think I've started to overthink everything lost confidence and I dont shoot as regularly as I used to if you think you cant hit the target,,,, you definitely won't.

I had my gun fitted, it transpired that it was shooting slightly high and left. After some excellent work by my gunsmith I’m hitting far more clays than I’m missing! In other words I’ve gone from 17/36 to 25/36, not that brilliant but at least I know it’s me and not the gun that’s the problem!

Very informative , I was Clueless , I am sure just from watching this Video I would Hit more Clays with my old Scattergun . But I am waiting for my new Ethos Sport (like a Walnut Super Sport ), with adjustable stock (within limits) to arrive next week in time for the Range reopening . Excellent Video Keep up the Great Work .

Nice video I always bought a gun the way it came to my shoulder I am a side by side man just started shooting over/under sporting clays after 70 years I have had the devil of a time finding the right gun this information will help my quest to find just the correct one.

I think your observation is on the mark. I usually reach for an older SXS first just because they fit so much better. I only have one O/U, a Beretta, and some day I may have the stock adjusted, but not yet, at least not as long as the lateral doubles continue to fit me so well.

I'm 6'4", and shoot a number of different guns. I've never had an official fitting, but my best and most natural feeling shooter is an older William Powell & Son. It has a 14 1/4" LOP and about 3.5" of drop at the heel. I find most modern guns seem to have much less drop, and I have to focus more on proper mount.

In a future video, would it be possible to explain more about master eye importance and problems of changes as you get older, use more computer screens, etc? Are solutions such as the Easyhit bead an option, instead of maybe a crossover stock?
@wholeNwon
@wholeNwon 6 лет назад
I've been around a LONG time and find that modern production shotgun stocks are far too straight with insufficient drop at the comb and heel to properly accommodate the normal human body. That's why we see so many shooters contort themselves over their weapons. It doesn't have to be that way. The gun should shoot where you are looking when in a comfortable stance to see the target and to absorb the recoil while still being able to get back on target very quickly. That's why very old guns often fit much more comfortably. The old timers really knew what they were doing.

They did, apart from being shorter on average than we are. I couldnt agree with you more about lack of cast, although it keeps my stock bending jig in business

The Gun Shop I was at my local gun store today looking at some beretta's. Found a nice S/H one in really good condition. Unfortunately I could see too much of the rib although my eye was centre with the bead. When I told the dealer this he handed me a much more expensive gun (£1100 difference) and it wasnt as bad. So basically I can have the stock adjusted to get my eye to see less of the rib without having to pay crazy amounts of money on a different gun? How much would this cost roughly and how much of the rib should I actually see? I see and hear conflicting information on how much rib I should see. Any help would be greatly appreciated as my local dealer just seems to want more and more money..... Don't we all. It's my first gun so I want it to be right and I won't be going to my local dealer as I've seen and heard enough from other folk.

@@stephenmac3105 Sounds like you experienced what I described. Since you stated that it was to be your first gun, I assume that you are somewhat less experienced than many others. That's good because it was one of the reasons that you were unwilling to accept poor fit as the norm. A good shop will have a "try-gun" that can be adjusted to a perfect fit so that you know what's right for you. Some of these guns are intended to be taken to the range and shot to verify the fit. You might want to try some old boxlocks from past generations.

yes gun fit is critical but what many people forget once the gun is fit to you you need to go to a patterning plate and see what's actually happening you may need to get the gun readjusted again so that the gun shoots where you like

Like Johnny said, develop your mount before getting a stock fitted or you will waste your money big time. I'd recommend using products like stick on comb raisers and heel pads to get you close if needed until you shoot for a couple years and get your mount fairly good.

Great video--what I'd like to know is what comes first for a relatively new shotgunner: the chicken of your shooting posture or the egg of your shotgun's stock dimensions. The latter should be determined by the former, but if you're new to the sport you'll naturally try to adapt to whatever gun you have at your disposal.
@tgsoutdoors

We get a lot of people coming in for gunfit for their first gun - this is a very difficult thing as they rarely have a consistent style, so trying ot fit is difficult. Getting it close is a matter of experience in these cases, and getting it close will allow them to come in for a second fit at a later stage.
@wholeNwon
@wholeNwon 5 лет назад
As you indicated, one begins with the former. Stance results not just from the need for reasonable comfort (i.e. easily taken) but from the need to absorb recoil and then to be back on target as quickly as possible in case a second shot is needed. A right-handed person is then leaning slightly forward with more weight on the near leg, etc. I like my head a little higher for a better field of view when cheek is against the stock.

Great video as always. How do you cope with shooting when you wear varifocals? The other half wears them & struggles to see the rib & the target in focus at the same time.
@wholeNwon
@wholeNwon 5 лет назад
That's really a good question and emphasizes the importance of fit. Personally, I'm hardly aware of the rib and the bead. My guns fit well and, when I bring them up, they are pretty much aligned with the target. Actually, one of my doubles has very little cast off and, by comparison, is a real chore to shoot.
@hypegamergig1785

John, question for you. I have Browning 525 and drop of the stock is not enough for me. I have longish neck and I really have to crawl over the stock in order to see the rib slightly raising (putting one pound coin on the rib right above receiver). When I try to mount the gun naturally or quick enough like when picking up a bird for a fast shot a see too much rib and obviously shooting high. Yes, I can float the bird but with different distance it will be different amount of float. Checked on pattern board and my POI is 25 sms above. Yes, I can fit myself to the gun and make it shoot 6 o’clock position but I am not able to control it every single shot. The only way out I see is to increase drop by filing the top of the comb. To my regret we do not have experienced gunsmiths where I live and I will have to do it myself. Will appreciate if you could explain how to do this or perhaps send a link if you have already covered this subject in the past. Thank you.

@TGS Hi John, I'm a bit on the tall side. You shoot lots of different guns. What do you do when your gun is too small? And what adjustments do you make?
@tgsoutdoors
@tgsoutdoors 2 года назад
adjustable combs are usually necessary, and stock extenders. Permanent extenders are preferable to the 'boot' type.

@@tgsoutdoors Thank you for the reply. And yes, I had to get my gun stock fitted. But my question, comes from thinking of you shooting your gun of the day (for example the Purday) and wondering what you do to get the best out of it? Having a comb raiser was not an option with a £50k lend gun for example ...

So for someone who is six foot four inches tall and muscular and very broad shouldered as i play football american football and i am not sure if my gun needs to be fit what would be the basic length and drop as I don't have a gunsmith near me
@tgsoutdoors
@tgsoutdoors 6 лет назад
Drop is more to do with face shaoe and position so its hard. Length would be somewhere between 15 1/4 and 16" dependent on how much mass your shoulders have.

If a gun is too long, I suggest you place it on top of your shoulder and press agains your cheek. I do that and works just fine. You will look different but that is because you are told that gun should bot agains your shoulder and kick you to death to make a good shot. We shouldn't go around and cut the stock on every gun that so called dosnt fit us we should be creative and hold some guns different than others. Thank you
