1) They tried that, but M14 magazines have a lot of variance, and the AI style magazine used is standard among many quality rifles. 2) I agree 3) The flash suppressor is removable. Jeff
The rifle also has rings to mount a scope atop the receiver. A flash suppressor is as effective on a bolt gun as it is on a semi-auto. Serves the same purpose. Jeff
Ruger started off designing the weapon to use surplus M-14 or FAL magazines, but found that there is a lot of variation in those, which caused feeding problems. Kel-Tec has run into this with the RFB. A lot of the mags on the market are not reliable. Therefore, Ruger decided upon the Accuracy International style. Jeff
@TheHossUSMC Yeah no doubt about that. Something I see being done often is taking old Mosins and making them scout rifles. It's pretty cheap because you don't have to bend the blot handle down for a regular scout. They sell scout mounts that replace the stock rear sight with a rail for optics. You can then add all you want to it. I'm sure it would come out cheaper than a M77 but not as nice looking. Also I don't know how accurate a Mosin like that would be.
After waiting 4 years since the scout hit the market here in Australia I finally have mine in the form of a 16 inch stainless without the flash hider + warne low rings Xs Sights rail and a redfeild revolution 2-7x33 scope ! Total spend second hand $ 1309 for the money I am Extremely happy with the rifle grouping 3/4 MOA with 168 grain handloads. Thanks Ruger :)
ah I love that place, especially when they team up with manufacturers. They'll design a gun with everything you need and nothing you don't! Did my 250 and CCW out there and they keep me coming back to get beat up in the GAS Match every year. Ron Benson even got a few days of work out of me when I tried to do an internship but my school didn't let it count. Screw the system!
@TheHossUSMC The scout rifle was an idea pioneered and created by Jeff Copper back in the 80s. The concept was a rifle that was good for defense and good for hunting. Something handy to have on you. It's idea that never really caught on because most people don't keep rifles by there side and use them often. Not like the use to in the days of ol'. Also most SD encounters happen much close than the range the scout rifle was intended for.
@TheKodiak72 I never said that any gun that can't produce sub-MOA groups is crap. For myself, I'm only interested in purchasing a rifle that's at least as good as I am. Accurate, reliable rifles capture my interest because they give me the confidence to take any shot at distances which I'm consistently capable of scoring lethal hits. The more accurate the rifle, the farther my ethical hunting range expands.
It looks like Ruger has another winner on it's hands! I can't wait to get my hands on one. I was set to sell my spare car next year so that I can order the Specter B.A.B.R made by Underground Skunkworks .Msrp on that was $4495 but seeing this made me change my mind! It definitely will cost less to acquire the Ruger so I'll have more coin left for a quality optic, spare mags and more ammo! Thank you so much Jeff for showcasing the new Ruger! Happy New year!
@glennwih They don't always have to fire the gun LOL I liked this one it was about the features. Which i thought were nice, but I am a Ruger fan. as far as shooting goes it is a 308 whats to see. it is accurate well powered. but this one will fit more people better.
It's not a sub-MOA rifle, but 1.5 MOA is a fine level of accuracy for a Scout-type rifle with such a short barrel. I'd have prefered an 18-20" barrel to wring a little more velocity out of the .308 Win., but 2550-2600 fps is still respectable.
I wish they came out with a semi-auto version with different stock options. Maybe a beefed up mini-14 in .308, I remember them making one years ago. Just like Ruger to come out with something no one was asking for. I still want one though.
@opmike343 Thank you! I see so many comments where people want a .308 mini-14 and I cant help but laugh because they might as well buy an m14/m1a. I wonder if they even thought their comment thru. Glad somebody else gets it.
@TsugaC i dont understand this fascination with unless u have a MOA gun. its shit. most of us, use them for hunting. and most hitzones are 4-7" big... so even a 2 or 3MOA rifle is fine for a hunting rifle
It depresses me you need to remove the rear sight to mount a conventional scope. If it wasn't for that this would be a no brainer buy for me. Now i need to consider my options for scope mounts...
Perhaps I missed something - but I don't see anybody actually SHOOTING the rifle or handling it in a practical rifle course, or showing its accuracy or lack thereof. Or did I miss it???
@gasdorf The Mini-14 action wouldn't be able to handle .308. They'd have to make so many changes, they'd essentially end right back to an M1A/M14 action...which already exists.
does any know if you could take the bottome plate assy. from this rifle and put it ina a standard m77/mkii? that would be a neat little upgrade to my mkii.
I am in love with this rifle. It is every thing I believe a rifle should be at a price I can afford. Fuck Steyr and their price tag! i've been waiting my whole life for this gun.
It is available from Seven Brothers Mercantile (sevenbros-dot-com) for only $5.99. Measures 3x5 feet with 2 grommets. Search for "M4 Come and Take It Flag", item number fsh-m4. We have no financial interest, it's just a cool flag that everyone should own.
@Gunblastdotcom I agree with you Jeff and would only voice a few changes they should make or had from the start. 1. the box magazine should have been the double stack from the M1A/M14(reduces cost and increases availability as well as capacity) 2. It should have an adjustable trigger that can be changed from 2.5-5.5 pound, using only an allen wrench. 3. The flash suppresor should be removable with optional break, compensator suppresor (AR birdcage style) or thread protector available. My 2 cents
