what i really dig about these mgsd kits is the detail in the head. its like they took the actual 1:1 size mecha and shrank it without losing detail. looks soooo cool.
This! I love the way you can see the "camera's" in the eyes, pair that with the fact it's a mini master grade, the sheer amount of detail they pack in is incredible! Definitely need this next to the MG Barb's!
@@MrMuiliehad the same thought too! Especially the shoulders. I recently bought the msgd barbs and tried to put on the mgsd shoulders onto the mg but unfortunately it wont work straight out of box. Need some customization.
I dont think Mika ever used the smoothbore gun without keeping it attached to the backpack subarms. Pretty sure thats part of why its so stable, being braced in the back as well as the grip.
Maybe we're at a turning point where MG splits into multiple lines permenantly. Maybe soon all normal MGs will be Ver Ka level, while SD is the fun collectibles and EX are the high end super kits
It's already happened It's pretty obvious that bandai's "affordable premium" line is RG, and little by little FM is becoming the focus of the 1/100 scale with ver ka still around to give the scale a premium touch.
I am hoping whatever improvement they are doing with MGSD (in specific, the detail in the eyes) would transfer over to newer MG in the near future, if we are lucky enough to get them.
It’s purely speculation on my part, but I have to wonder if the drop off in MGs is because of the explosion in Gunpla’s popularity, making it hard to produce as much new product, not to mention the massive uptick in HG kits taking priority, both WFM and other series (Scopedog, Kyoukai Senki etc.) I know they’re still building another factory to keep up with demand, so perhaps MGs will become a little more common again after that opens
@@wulf8889Isn't that also why Bandai has been experimenting with recycled plastic and plastic substitutes? It's getting to the point where it might be more sustainable to switch off plastic but in doing so it could lead to bigger kits than HG becoming really hard to produce due to the inflation. It's why even though the Ecopla line is far more sustainable, it'd be a lot harder to push it anywhere but P Bandai. Despite them probably being designed to at least take up to 50% of the load off of Master Grades, it's kinda hard to justify it for how much R&D it would take. It's the Gas Vs Electric argument except in Gunpla form.
the HG also got much much better in the last couple of years, both the normal releases (WfM) and premium bandai variants. The "inner frame" is just not the highest priority nowadays it seems: articulation and details are.
@@Zeromaru42ecopla is more of a marketing thing than a line. they are already using ecopla in some regular kits. it's marked on the boxes (my mg astray red frame kai did for example). the issue is that ecopla is only really used for dark colours because it's hard to make other colours (cause if how dyes work), and only so effective to use as a technique
To me, the fact that this exists shows that Bandai is really trying to take steps to phase out MGs. It seems as though they might simply not be as profitable as other lines, and this feels like an attempt to capitalize on the wider appeal of cute robots rather than a smaller but more dedicated consumer base.
My sentiments are the same. I hate the thought of mg kits getting phased out, and really wish they could open a factory here in the states we could buy from instead of having to go through 3rd parties that jack up the prices.
I think mg’s are kinda limited by the physics- long levers and big mass with set characteristics for plastic- kinda hard to create something extremely impressive without complications. Mgsd does not have to deal wirh physics that much, so bandai can put more stuff into them
Eversince Bandai expanded its plamos other than gundams, the MGs were forgotten. Another reason, I think they are also minimizing the number of plastics included per kit.
You say that first statement like its a bad thing. I for one love that bandai have been branching out to other mecha franchises that I love too, like the new Macross kits for example. Honestly, there are a good number of mg kits in my backlog I could care less about wanting a new one anytime soon. Sure it sucks that we haven't seen any new proper mg in a while, but we've got damn good kits recently that are also of high quality that makes up for it. Fm aerial, fm forbidden, zeta ver ka, rg epyon, mgsd freedom and barbatos.
The smaller stature actually makes it look more stout and less anorexic compared to the 1/100 and HGs. Hopefully that makes it stay stable over a longer period of time compared to the larger scaled kits.
Instead of Master Grade SDs...How about more "amplified" SDs, Bandai? IE The SD extra fancy designs with NORMAL Gundam proportions. Please, Bandai? Do stuff we actually want for once.
God I hope we get some MGSD from the Sangoku Soketsuden/Heroes World series! I love the designs of those guys, but want some real articulation/color separation (fawk them stickers lol)
Yes! The Cao Cao wing Gundam or Liu Bei unicorn Gundam to name two that I really think should be mgsd. Or they could go the build fighters/divers route and do the Barbatos from SD soketsuden.
Oh hell yes! I love the design of those kits, I can only imagine how they would look as an mgsd. Though knowing bandai, they would probably make them pbandai 😅.
Yep. I definitely want one of those. Sucks a bit that I have to get it through local private vendors though. I always have a soft spot for the SD line since they just often look so solid, like if people ever bring a gundam into reality, I think they would be about that size since they can move and perform in urban areas much better. But still, thanks for the great review.
Based on the kits they relased I'm guessing their using popular gundams to boost popularity of the line. I got a pretty good feeling the next kit is either a nu or a unicorn gundam. Me personally I'm wishing for MGSD Zeta Gundam.
God I want them to release the knight gundam in this new style so badly. Getting a regular MG of it would be cool too even though I already have the metal robot lacroan hero.
Nice review plus I love this better but the fact that it doesn’t have the pistons on the legs and feet that the original mg Barbados had is a little bummer but other than that, this might be my favorite mg and gunpla. (I plan on getting this for my birthday, march 11th.
Just built mine a few days ago. It really is better than the MG. The feet are more secure and solid, and don't use a c-clip. They put the opening gimmick on the knees instead of the arms, which is better executed than MG. And the shoulder armor can be easily swapped off to put it in an incomplete 1st form. MGSD again proves they can squeeze so much detail and mechanical design into a small scale. This might be too optimistic, but an RG Barbatos seems slightly less impossible now. Also, seeing that huge chipped off damage on the left ankle armor in the beginning, RIP.
I think these are really cool. But I would still vastly prefer more standard MG's. The full mechanics just don't hit the same. And i'd still very much love some classic MG's, like the saviour. And i've been trying to get my hands on the MGEX strike freedom for what feels like YEARS. but it's always sold out
I'm actually quite fond of these proportions. I just hope they make these versions after their MG counterparts and not before. It adds another layer of possibilities for displaying your kits.
Fun fact : sword of barbatos in this kit that made from center grey part and two white parts sandwiched it, is actually lore accurate, barbatos used naked sword before having it a hand guard(if I'm correct), for the hg though bandai make two separate sword
I would also love to see a normal master grade. Bandai please. The SD proportions on this aren't my thing but the execution of the kit does look like perfection.
Im REALLY hoping that since these MGSDs have such crazy detail that it is foreshadowing a generational leap for MG coming soon. Sort of how g witch kits feel like a leap forwards for HG
A lot of people would stop building though there’s a lot who are MG purists. And a LOT of people who really hate SD no matter how detailed it is and hate the fact that MGSD exist. If Bandai doe move to just MGSD and the other iterations of MG instead of regular mainline Gunpla would get less fans I think but that’s just speculation
After MGSD we will get METAL ROBOT SPIRITS <SIDE MS> Gundam Barbatos (1st to 4th forms), after that RG, then cycle again to MG Barbatos Lupus and so on....
I was really hoping they would smash out a tonne of them since they all use the same frame, Kimaris Vidar needs a 1/100 kit. I know my fave Gremory would never get a 1/100 but Kimaris Vidar? Come on bandai
@@ChaelaThompson dude same here, I at the least was expecting like the a Gusion/Rebake set, a Graze and a Kimaris by now. Like one every year like they did with the MG 00 kits
@@MechaMeister6511well they didnt do exia 2.0 while they have the frames all together, atleast your mg barbatos wasnt mg exia/mg unicorn ver ka. Or even the 00 raiser with its backweight problem, early mg syndrome. No one want junks in their collection. And mg dynames comes 10+ years after mg exia, unlike seed they got all of their suits even the one from side story (like noir and stargazer).
to be fair, just look at 99% of the rest of model kits, they all are filled with seams, nubs, like 5 pieces molded into a single one, only bandai delivers such quality and color separation, with every kit the basic knowledge is needed to build and remove the seams and nubs, it seems that we're reaching a point where we'll complaint about the only company that make a kit like this for like 4800 yen, common, literally moderoid sell HG quality kits at twice the price of this kit, and sometimes they don't even compare to an 2000s HG...
When MG Barbatos was released, the Gundam Frame runners only say "Gundam Frame", now with the MGSD Barbatos's Gundam Frame runners says "Gundam Frame 1", it means they would make another kit using the Gundam Frame right? They would, right?
Is the shoulder armor compatible with the MG Barbs without plastic cement? Also what the heck, I have the exact same amount completed on my MG Barbatos lol
Despite how the series played out I could never grasp something.. people said the barbatos took on a monstrous form as it progressed, to me it didn't seem so.
No one asked for a MG Ver Ka of Narrative? Lol you're detached from the community... All protagonist mobile suits from the Universal Century deserve a Master Grade kit. Period. I'll take Narrative ver ka over any more kits from Seed or 00... because there's a reason those kits don't sell.
NO. I just don't get this fascination with the SD. Sure they are kinda cute chibi gundam for a couple of bucks but they should never cannibalize serious series like Master Grade. Not buying them out of principle.
Probably going to get a bunch of negativity for my opinion, but this line just seems like an excuse to say they're still making MG without actually doing so. Never asked for this line and feel it's being used as a stopgap while taking actual MG release slots. If they have the time to spend on development for something like this, that's time that could've gone into making a real MG that was pretty amazing. At this point, I'm just.....disappointed in their direction and decisions for some things.
