Bob Ross: hello and welcome to Joys of painting, todays subject is gunpla, now then let's start by shaking the devil out of the paint, later we'll paint a landscape on the shield with a cozy cabin and a tiny friendly shrub, and remember that shrub is our little secret.

I have painted minitures like Warhammer and Warmachine for a decade now, but have always avoided gunpla since I do not own an airbrush, and out of general fear that my skill set, while not that expansive, would not translate well to bigger models. However, after watching this video, you have convinced me to give it a shot. It will certainly be something new and challenging, but that's what the hobby is all about. Thank you for helping this budding modeller mature! I will certainly be following you!

I'm at the stage that I am ready to start painting my gunpla... but am hesitant to begin developing my skills. I almost feel like I should pick up some warhammer miniatures to start on a smaller scale.
@RayFChung

@@GurtMcDirt warhammer ones might cost a bit much for that for small surface area. You can probably just grab a cheap HG kit or even an SD kit to practice with. I used my pre 2005 kits to practice painting since most of those were of kinda shoddy quality

I've watched this video about 7 times now. I'm floored by your level of painting skill. I tried on a few of my HGs but thought I was messing up due to visible brush strokes. Now I understand that hand painting doesn't have to be perfect. Especially for a mecha, it should look beaten and used. I recommend your videos to every model enthusiast I meet.

Incredible to see someone paint the inverse way of how we're usually taught. Your use of dark colors first, then progressing towards lighter ones hits a lot of birds with one stone. It's pretty much set up for weathering at the very start, where most other folks would do that at the very end. I don't have experience painting Gunpla apart from decent work with spray cans and a terrible experience with airbrushing, and life circumstances don't allow either, so I'm looking into doing hand-painting. Yours is a remarkable video. Thanks!

This video just blew my mind away (watched it several times these past several weeks). I started plamo just this year, with gunplas. I’m a total noob. I felt quickly stuck cause I can’t get an airbrush. I simply lack the space for it. BUT, with THIS video I just started to think it possible to achieve something worth the time and work with handbrush. I looked the whole hobby differently. Really inspiring. Like discovering a new world of possibilities and awesomeness. Since then I practiced my handbrushing with Nausicaa models from Bandai, and Dragon ball mecha collection. I also practice on SD gunplas models, they are cheap and easy, most convenient to learn how to prepare kits, try stuff and experiment painting and weathering. And now, you’ve made me into Ma.k, like I told you on another video earlier. So… this long comment just to express gratitude, respect and admiration. THANK YOU LINCOLN.

Aye my comment was in the video! another great one! I think what benefitted me the most about this video was the use of completely different reds on those bits. I tend to go one flat color and then let the gunk wash handle most of the shading but I really like the way the head and shoulder turned out on this one!

Hi Lincoln, i dont have an airbrush and mainly uses a normal brush. I have just got into the hobby recerntly and im on my 3rd kit. In my first attempts on painting i used normal brush which i did not find great as the paints would dry in unnatural pattern and the brush marks are very noticable in most flat areas. In my 2nd kit i used spray cans for plastic modelling as i though it would create a quality similar to airbrushing, however i ended up regreting it, the quality of the paint was smooth but the fine detials on the kit became almost unnoticable and was burried due to the thickness of the paint and the cans were expensive! I learned from your tutorial that with the right tools and experience, you can still create a great finish without having to rely on an airbrush. I think i will give hand brushing another go for my 3rd kit and will definitely use a thinner this time!
@PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright
@PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright 6 лет назад
Excellent, that is so true and thank you! Yes, experience always wins. Spray cans, we need to go slow. Paint brush, we need to control the paint. I practise, practise and practise! Enjoy and thanks for watching and commenting on my video.
@ilink06
@ilink06 6 лет назад
Maybe when you use spray can, you spray too thick layers... Fine details should still be visible with multiple things layers of sprays. I used spray can before but I think hand paint has more satisfaction. Buy a kit and try out different paint, different thinner, different brush, different bush stroke, etc. Try everything, when you get it, you will know what to do.

Now, i only use spray paints for primer and coating and I started loving paiting with brush again!

Yes, i spray quickly and would go back and fourth. I remember seeing some drip marks too so just to give u an idea of how much of a newb i was. i didnt even try doing any research back then. At the moment, i have been practising hand brushing on SD gunplas that i got on ebay before i paint on my 3rd kit, im really scared of messing it up so im going to practice more. tnx!

I found your channel through this video and I think these tips might really help me since I never painted a gunpla even though I've been doing miniature wargames for most of my life. The big surfaces scare me, but these techniques make it a bit less daunting.

Wanting to paint my first kit here soon, I’ve built several but want to start customizing. There are also some I already have I would like to touch up, so to see you take a fully assembled kit and just hit it with the primer was insane. No one else I’ve watched has done that; it’s always every individual piece on an alligator clip.

Amazing work as always Linc, well done!! As a big fan of clean builds in general, your models and tutorials always inspire me to want to tackle something with a bit more weathering and texture to it, put down the airbrush and pick up the paint brush. Your videos always manage to cater to a variety of skill levels with something in them for everyone to learn from.
