This was the greatest show I ever attended so far (Aerosmith, Deep Purple, & Guns n Roses at the Meadowlands on August 16, 1988). I remember being driven there by my friend Doug (I didn't have a driver's license at the time), after playing a softball game in Piscataway NJ. I was pretty wasted (got sober in 1991). GnR had just put out their first album a year earlier & we just caught the last few songs of their set. I had never seen Deep Purple before or since & they just blew me away. They played one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard live - "Child in Time", during which I think I had a spiritual experience. When they started into "Smoke on the Water" I remember some people piled up toilet paper (I assume) in one of the sections & lit it on fire, making a six-foot round ball of flame. Aerosmith was great that night too. I remember fireworks at the end & right behind us a large railing at the front of one of the sections broke off & crashed twenty feet down on the people below, injuring more than a few.
Deep purple influenced Aerosmith which in turn had a huge influence on GNR (especially Slash). Has their ever been a concert lineup with this sorta close knit lineage?
I like what Aerosmith said about deep purple, and the album Machine Head that they were listening to it in their hotel room in 1972 for ideas for their first album, that attitude that they had..that’s the influence that deep purple had.
I was there, upper deck of Giants Stadium, almost 34 years ago. Legendary show, great time to be young and alive. Some footage from this show made it into GnR’s Paradise City video later on.
I am recreating this concert in my mind...I was 7 at the time and would have killed to see those 3 bands. I mean, GNR is my favorite band of all time, Deep Purple is my 3rd favorite band and Aerosmith just fucking rocks and still do...waiting for them to come in November for their last tour.
I was there on the floor - made our way to the front by the time Aerosmith played....Deep Purple was awesome, and I didn't really know GNR too well at the time, but that show made me a huge fan.
Still got my tic stub, showed Duff it last year @ his book signing, best $22.50 I ever spent. Giant Stadium got torched, as we all did. Gr8 show, Gr8 bands
I was also at this concert! I was an early supporter of Guns n Roses, an admirer of Deep Purple and an avid fan of Aerosmith. All three bands were great that night but I have to give it to Deep Purple... they stole the show with their near perfect set and Ian's spectacular vocals. Wow. Anyway thanks for posting this!
I was there. About 4 rows back on the grass. Deep Purple did a great job, Aerosmith was good but not at their best, G'N'R had some sound issues. It was G'N'R, DP and then Aerosmith.
I took my little cousin Frankie to this show, I had to hang drop him on to the field from the first level, cops were kickin the crap outta everyone, and vice versa.... great show, and DP ruled the night!
Anyone who was there remembers the riot on the field in between the GnR and Deep Purple sets. There were concession tents set up in the end zone on the field, and people were mobbing them, trying to get something to drink. I started pulling on one of the tent posts back and forth, and yelling '"plunder! plunder!". Other people around me started yelling it too, and the mob took over and started pulling the tents down and just looted everything. It turned into a melee. we were taking drinks and throwing them up into the stands, and people were fist fighting everywhere. the place was a mess when it was all over. Also, someone set an entire section of seats on fire during Deep Purple's Smoke on The Water. Huge fireworks show after Aerosmith at the end also. Epic show
I was there I remember that. There were hot dogs flying through the air. I said I guess we're not getting a hot dog tonight. I also remember seeing two fist fights, the seats in the upper deck on fire during smoke on the water, and a naked guy walking around on the floor with the crowd parting like the red sea around him. He kept saying I dare them to stop me.
I was there that day. It was awesome. G N R filmed the Padrise City video. And when Deep Purple played smoke on the water the fans tryed to light the stadium on fire.
I went to see Deep Purple. Fans wearing GNR shirts lit seats on fire during Smoke on the Water. Everyone was dancing and singing Smoke on the Water as the flames grew. Security started pulling fans out of the way; it was crazy.
i would do anything to go back in time and see this show. I wasnt alive when it happened. I wasnt even alive when Richie was still in Deep Purple and Slash was still in GnR. Man those must've been some good times
I was there!!! People burning starts during Smoke On The Water. Was a Jet season tix holder. Next Sunday you would not believe the graffiti on the seats with permanent black marker.
I was there - Crazy fffing show, dangerous too. 5 rows and 5 isles of seats in upper deck lite completely on fire during "smoke on the water", toilet paper streamers being thrown - on fire, between set changes it took an hour and there were massive fights happening on the floor. (man in the middle), a car lite on fire outside, people throwing full bottles of beer.... It was ffffing sick. To bad, my parents had to come pick me up cause I was only 16....can't imagine what they must of thought
@olhole HAHAHAHH! Yea he had them pegged pretty good. I guess it was the inside joke about them... IF Guns N Roses thought they were wild they wrere nothing compared to some of the bands that came before or after them...
ha funny - GNR is opened for aerosmit in early days - now played together - finaly Aerosmit is guests on his show :) Abaut new GNR - its a offend for name GUNS N ROSES its must named " AXL and friends" GNR died in 1993 but he lives forever Slash is real great musician and maybe the best rock Quitar player From Bulgaria with love to every single fan of GNR in this galaxy :)
I think Roger said: they (GnR's) seems to be doing it all wrong, right from the start. I guess Roger means "too much partying right out of the gate." Was he right?
there should be a reason if chinese democracy has sold like that few, and the reason is that this album sucks! this ain't a GN'R album... it's such an axl's project album. Guns N' Roses died long time ago
+gogglespisano24 GnR s sound was fading in an out.. after that they fixed the sound.. and the show was great.. it sucks that they didn't have it right from the get go... but they would a been dead on i think if the sound was correct.. i was there too..They should have fixed while they were still playing...
And Axl the A-hole was telling people not to listen to the security guards telling people to back up when people started to get crushed up front. I got away from that area soon after that.
