I wouldn't say he IS undervalued. Every time he gets mentioned it's usually with the highest respect. Even Axl, in interviews, typically cites Izzy as a fundamental component of their sound. Izzy gets his due, no doubt. As he should.
Watch people playing Izzys Mr Brownstone or Rocket Queen part. The guy took rythm guitar to the next level imo. One of my favorite Slash solo songs is his work with Izzy on Ghost. Listen to the song and it is like a GNR song with how the guitars work together.
The only thing that clued me in was in the original video, they show Izzy playing the intro "solo" quite clearly...the rest of the song I had no idea about until this!
He co wrote the best songs with Axl. Duff even said that “patience” would never have been a hit if it wasn’t for Axl’s contribution to the writing. This probably applied to most of their hit songs too.
This is exactly why Izzy and Slash are the perfect guitar combo! They had contrast in styles and all their guitar parts were entirely different. Absolutely brilliant guitar work on appetite for destruction. Thank you for this post
@@jonathanriojas2177 bro lol no they're not. There are plenty of videos on RU-vid that have both of their isolated tracks. They are playing subtle differences and Izzy is playing a lot of different fills as well. You obviously do not have an acute ear
Izzy's guitar sound was what I loved the most of all in all the AFD songs! It took all five of them to make it such a powerful album, but that rhythm guitar was orgasmic 😊
Orgasmic is truly the correct word to describe Izzy Stradlin. Guitar playing, looks, style, everything about him is sexy as hell. He oozes sex out of every pore. 🤤🤤🤤
I’m never easily impressed, but that performance is perfectly brilliant. Most cats focus on Slash’s part for obvious reasons, but without Izzy’s part the tune isn’t remarkable at all. You not only absolutely nailed Izzy’s part, you nailed the feel. So hard to do, and so incredibly awesome. Brilliant! Thanks for sharing. I’m subscribed.
I feel a lot of people when they hear someone say rhythm guitar they think bar chords and backing tracks but this just shows how intricate and important Izzy was. Whilst watching this I discovered that delicious parts of the song were actually played by Izzy. A lot of rhythm guitarist are very underrated and not noticed as much. In the 80s each member gave they own tone, feel and emotion to each legendary song. But as rock n’ roll has evolved, things have changed. Thanks man for the great video and cover. Much luv🙌
I rarely praise covers on here but this is phenomenal. Highlights the brilliance of an underrated rhythm guitarist and the lightning in a bottle that those two had together. I’m a huge slash fan but I’ll always feel that Izzy pushed him to be his best.
@@joaogabrielmatsudaverdi4070 While I agree that Fortus is a very good rhythm guitarist and compliments the band well, he hasn't yet shown if he can be a prolific songwriter like Izzy. His contributions to Chinese Democracy are muddled by the fact that there are overdubs on top of overdubs and the music itself wasn't nearly as strong as anything done during Izzy's days. Hopefully some new music will surface soon from the band and we can finally get a feel for how he fits with the (3/5ths) classic lineup on new material.
@@strandburger6353 before you even start playing, try singing or humming the guitar parts. You need to hear the sounds in your head, before you can play them. Also count 1 2 3 4 to your favorite rock songs, you need to get good at listening for the beat. Learning the guitar before you have a grasp of those concepts makes it much harder to learn the guitar, or any instrument.
Hippie Gamer I noticed same things! And the tone, I think only izzy knows how to make the right tone, and look at the style too! maybe he really is him?
Such a funky bad ass swinging rhythm part!! Izzy never struck me as being a really intricate type player but WOWW this just CRUSHES. I'll take your word for it this is what he plays... yikes man so creative with the different types of power chords... I love the way he slides the D chord up.... just brilliant, Izzy had his SHIT DOWN as a rhythm player.
In high school when appetite came out, I would run one wired headphone earbud up through my sleeve and rest my head on my hand so I could secretly listen during class. Never paid attention to whether I was doing the R or L channel, but randomly hearing one guitarist isolated on any given day was a huge eye opener. Vocals drums and bass were centered, but it was often Izzy in one channel and Slash in another. Great way to check each one out.
And they call Izzy a "rhythm" guitarist. Hahaha This kind of artistry is what makes early GNR songs so powerful. Izzy's ability to create harmonies and dissonance with Slash's lead gives their songs an epic sound and elevates Slash's playing at the same time.
The ability of two guitarists to play fully fleshed out parts on top of each other, that are radically different, is one of the most underrated skills of being a musical band I think.
Yeah, but so many amazing songs on the album too. But I guess we have to keep in mind there were probably 1000s of bands and only the ones with the talent and creativity for the first album made it.
Consider the fact that "You could be mine" and "November Rain"...and perhaps "Don't Cry" were written in the Appetite era, and it had the possibility of being... A supernova of rock! No complaints, either way. But damn!
Drinks and drugs never come first. They just sap creativity and cost money. The drink and drugs comes after the creative phase when the band are sitting around waiting to record twenty guitars and someone else is paying.
Great job on this, your tone is amazing and playing spot on. Well done bringing more attention to these intricate rhythm parts. Love Izzy's rhythm work.
@@tarunkumaar625 fuck yeah my favorite part of listening to GnR was how both sides of the earphones where different guitar playing, THAT SHIT FEEDS MY SOUL!!!! BEEN LISTENING TO GnR SINCE I WAS 6 and im now 25 and i cant believe my mom let me listen to that crazy shit!!!!! It was the stepping stone towards metal because my favorite song as a kid was literally, OUT TA GET ME. the imagery in my head was the awesome!!!
@@Violence1320 I was wondering: are there newer remixes that take away the two channels of the original experience? Or can you still distinctly hear Slash and Izzy's parts?
@@jeremycline9542 i can tell the difference? the guitar tones are different and the style too. Plus one is on the Right the other on the Left lol. Listen harder i guess haha. Idk if its because i play guitar but i know the weed helps lol
Thanks to RU-vid and people like you, lots of young and not so young GNR fans will be able to know who Izzy was in the band. That taste, that guitar arrangements... He is one of a kind, specially in GNR records. It took 30 years (not 14, ;) to start giving this man his place in music. Thanks a lot!!
Perfeito O melhor que já vi até hoje Timbre, pegada, reprodução Poderia fazer o Apettite, Ilusion 1 e 2 inteiros, mostrando a linha de guitarra do mestre Izzy Stradlin Forte abraço
This is a perfect example of how great rhythm guitar playing IS NOT MERELY chords. It is a combo of chords, chord fragments, double stops, short single string patterns all flowing together to make a great backdrop.
ive always wanted to hear the two guitars split apart. what an amazing piec... 4 choruses each 2 each in 2 keys, the breakdown... so many parts and such complicated riffing. this album still holds up and a lot of that has to to with the excellent rythm guitar
Great job bro!!! Excellent lesson for us players that have been playing a while and don’t need to hear all talking before a lesson!! Loved it man!!!☘️🎸🏴☠️
Great!! Izzy makes the perfect combination. He complements exactly to fill the song. Listen appetite for destruction with headphones is a pleasure L & R.
VERY nice. This reminds me so much of going through the AFD Cherry Lane sheet music book 30 years ago trying to figure out which parts belong to who...still really can't play any of it. You played Izzy's part to absolute perfection. God bless you for you sharing this with us.
As of today (Easter 2020)... there are 97 haters wishing they cold play such a stellar rendition of this all time gem... so I'll bite... I'll ask the ubiquitous (and utterly inescapable) question - how the eff do you thumbs down this vid? Nice work, boss 💪
Great playing brother, I've been a Guns fanatic since they dropped Appetite so I know their tunes inside sand out. You totally nailed everything, the part, the feel, the sound. Keep up the good work man. Guns n Roses are the greatest hard rock band of all time, no competition.
Agreed. A friend and I were discussing a few years ago the greatest rock 'n' roll albums, ever, of all genres, and we decided that Appetite was the best album since The Wall, and there hasn't been a better album yet.
I have to learn thee Izzy's part of this song, your video is really helping me, but I never think it was going to be so chaotic in the solo part... it's being harder than I thought.
As much as I like Slash, I think he stole a lot of Izzy's thunder. Slash and Izzy could have worked more in tandem like Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing does in Judas Priest
@@carpediemarts705 No, he didn't. That was even a big part of why he left, and why he won't return. GNR became "too big" for him, and he didn't like the fame and attention. He's played with Axl here and there for random shows and songs, but he'll never rejoin the band, because they surpassed what he wanted.
I bought amazon fire tv, and looking for best video that heals / encourage myself in this COVID situation. I am huge GN’R fan since 1992, and wanted see GN’R video on Friday nite at home, and found this video reminds me back to my high school eras. This guy is super, I would love him to be in this NITLT tour as well as Izzy. Izzy rules, and this guy is really awesome. Love Axl and Izzy! Also love Slash and Duff and Steven of course.
