As a woodworking hobbyist, walnut is my favorite wood to work with.

There's one piece in there, the checkering/carving reminds me of the old Browning Olympian grade rifles. Very well done.

Kurt sounds like one of those guys that you could talk to for days and not soak up a tenth of the knowledge he has.

Birch and Beech is quite easy to distinguish. Birch is much more maple esque in looks, while Beech has it's small dots/rays all over

I epoxy a 5/16 to 3/8 Hickory rod 41/2 inch long through the pistol grip four strength. And pillar and glass bed them. These are done on the heavier magnum calibers.

From what I understand, birch was also used for M1 Garands and M1 Carbines during WWII for cost saving reasons as well.

From the 1870s in Scandinavia, used for the 12.7 rolling block, true it is quite a dull timber until you get to the birds eye and striped selections, but it's a good timber for the job for sure.

You have a lot of patience. Checkering and carving is a time-consuming process.

Does the width of the growth rings indicate durability at all? Some growth rings are very wide and far apart----a great look. Other times, the growth rings are very narrow and tight/consistent. Aside from personal preference for looks, is one better than the other for long term performance of the wood?

That inletting is beautiful almost a shame to cover it up with with the barreled actions. I am waiting for him to mention Turkish Walnut.

Kurts Checkering Is Boyd's usually good at getting the grain structure for the pistol grip right on the XX grade walnut?
