I epoxy a 5/16 to 3/8 Hickory rod 41/2 inch long through the pistol grip four strength. And pillar and glass bed them. These are done on the heavier magnum calibers.
From the 1870s in Scandinavia, used for the 12.7 rolling block, true it is quite a dull timber until you get to the birds eye and striped selections, but it's a good timber for the job for sure.
Does the width of the growth rings indicate durability at all? Some growth rings are very wide and far apart----a great look. Other times, the growth rings are very narrow and tight/consistent. Aside from personal preference for looks, is one better than the other for long term performance of the wood?
