This isn't for people that want to copy Hendrix note for note it's for people that want to think about their rhythm playing and understand the way advanced rhythm is created. Thank you Guthrie very well put
Yes. But Guthrie is also showing the importance of Hendrix. RU-vid says Hendrix is overrated? Some guitarist don’t understand Jimi Hendrix is 60 years ago. At that time nobody but NOBODY played double stops (rhythm n blues chops like Hendrix). All the great guitarist Jeff beck Eric Clapton were absolutely shredded when they seen Hendrix. Elton John, Mick fleetwood said interview during 1980s said Jimi was best performance they ever seen and nothing compared since. The films of Jimi playing live are not Jimi’s best.. During 80s I talked with many older guys who seen Hendrix. Story’s varied, but the people who seen Jimi twice. Always said the first was the best, some said they haven’t seen performance like Jimi’s since then.
Guthrie Govan is great. When he comments, his comments reveal a thorough knowledge of what he is referring to and when he doesn't know about something, he just says so and doesn't try to fake it.
Him & Paul Gilbert are such great teachers. They able to explain very complex stuff so it's simple- Gutherie just says it or teaches it in a more entertaining fashion with stuff like "hendrixian noodles"
@@ovmeygat It's the "rhythm solo" from All Along the Watchtower. Guthrie was emulating it to demonstrate how Jimi so effortlessly mixed together the strumming of a background rhythm guitar with the unique melody of a lead guitar. And of course, being Guthrie, he played it clean as fuck
it so cool to see a shredder who didn´t forget about the blues and that shows in his playing, even in wild and supersonic moments, most shredders sound like machines that bore me in the second song but i can be months listening to Guthrie, what a master.
mrbsred1 Guthrie Govan is a fantastic player - we have a huge selection of videos here on our channel & more on our website! If you have a spare 60mins we had a Live Guthrie Govan master class which is available to view on our website for free: www.licklibrary.com/features/28888/guthrie-govan/may-2010
Spot on. Hendrix's style was essentially playing rhythm guitar in a lead sort of manner. Those 2 & 3 note voicings or embellishments on major chord shapes became his signature sound. He was a soul player with a funky feel. Guthrie's example at 1:34 is a textbook page out of Jimi's book :)
Remember this about Jimi we only really had him for about 3 or 4 years. He had a pretty good body of work that still influences guitarists to this day. If he had lived whom knows what magic he had left in him to share. A lot of guitarists for years just concentrate on the playing only leaving the structure of a song to show their skills at playing. Jimi focused on performing his music, guitar and singing maybe doing some playing behind his head etc. There is a difference there and a lot more to concentrate on. Not to mention the beautiful songs he wrote as a whole not to just show off his jamming ability.
Guthrie's got the best quips to go along with these instructions, lol. Real down to earth, real easy to understand. Great job Guthrie! That SUHR is SO nice...
This guy is just ridiculous. All of his videos should start with disclaimer saying something like "beware, you WILL feel like a useless waste of biomass after watching"
Amazingly valuable and concise advise. Especially love the last tip in regards to advancing the CAGED system further understanding the fret board.. learning songs within limited chunks of the neck!?!! That's a perspective of practise that I've never thought of in my 3 decades of learning the art!! Awesome stuff
This guy blows my mind, everytime I see and hear him, his knowledge on the guitar and his playing, is where I would like to be, but will never reach that level.
CAGED man. I've been teaching this theory for 15 years and literally opens the gate to the board. Reduced inversions of all 5 positions will expose the past 50 decades of all classic guitar lines. G - you the man ✌️
It all boils down to this really- hendrix was a brilliant musician and songwriter, a true creative genius. It blows my mind how he had no music theory, same with cats like Danny Gatton. Just awesome. Here's an interesting fact- JImi had synesthesia which means that when he heard sound and music he'd see colours aswell. So for us, a certain chord or progression might have been the colour blue for him
This is what I am trying to show my grandson who is learning to play. The same chord / solo theory has been applied before and after Jimi by many many guitarists. I always found it much more melodic and listenable. If this is tried, it will open a lot of doors to better soloing as opposed to scales only.
I saw you alive In Tampon, and I could have killed the sound man. You are a Musician. OK. That's about it. It is a pleasure to listen to you playing. That's the point of playing an instrument in the first place, isn't it?
Despite the fact that I worship Hendrix and like Govan, Hendrix was not the first one to mix rhythm and melody... decades before him people like Django, or much earlier some unknown flamenco players, were doing that. Let's say that Hendrix made that playing style very famous for rock audiences and for the masses.
This was absolutely fantastic to watch... Hendrix was a genius... so is this man... fantastic manner of explaining. And he also reminds me of Robert Plant. Which always helps.🙏🏼😄
With already having a musical background with a stringed instrument I can't imagine the transition to be too difficult. Also, you will be far ahead of most beginners who start out without one, Good luck to you and your musical travels.
Very well organized and clear video.... I don't know how your able to get your point across so clearly, I understand exactly what you are talking about, I would not be able to explain this issue to people the way you do hahaha
He lives near me. Never met him but he goes into the pub my flat mate works at, proper nice guy by the sounds of it. Only seen him in passing never mustered up the courage to say hi. Maybe one day
Kidding? Did you not hear the high praise he gives Jimi in the beginning of the video, or the praise he gives him any time his name is mentioned? Definitely a fan.
there is one single song, played live by the experience at the royal albert hall, which in my opinion summarizes all of hendrixs rythmic genius and his tricks, as well as his creativity while doing it with such fluency and naturality - this song is "lover man", the first half, up to the solo. Listen to it carefully and you'll be grooving along.
Finally...a shred guy who actually plays like Hendrix...I have seen alot try and just not understand it. I am an aficionado, I actually have the music to the guitar intro to little wing tattooed on my left arm.
@yatah That happens in studio recordings, especially with his tone. He sets it up for live shows, where the room is his reverb pedal. When fed directly into a recording, it sounds thin.
@maneatingtoilets u start from knowing how a chord is made, it's essentially 3 notes, for instance A chord: A, C#, E : look where else u can combinate these notes on the strings, no matter what shape, then try to add the minor 7th, the 4th.-
He means Rob Chapman of Chapman Guitars...he works a lot with and is good friends with Lee Anderton who owns Andertons Music shop in Guilford...they do loads of gear reviews
This bloke is the best guitar teacher I've ever seen in almost half a century. How old was he when Jimi died - wait, looking it up - he was in the womb when Jimi died, born about 3 months after that, weird...
Is there a course available on Hendrix Rhythm techniques available ? Guthrie takes about and demonstrates this technique/approach at 1:35 , " a melody while your outlining the chords" and at 2:45 "caged system ie C shape chords and outlining the major pentatonic"
You are a fan, Most of those players brought amazing elements that allow us to use, but Jimi, he basically gave it all... He taught us Chords and Lead at same freaking time... those elements can be use on ROCK, FUNK, JAZZ... but if u dont like the way he speaks(improvise) that doesn't mean anything... the way that Govan improvises does not speak to me neither, but his lessons and approach are amazing!
if youre interested in hendrix's rhythm stuff, there is another song called "move over let me dance", with tthe isley brothers. try to learn it note per note.
