Had professional contractor/roofer put up new metal roofing & clear panel roofing (for large deck) with new gutters & downpipes last year and it has been overflowing since then. My inexperienced father did it 25 years ago without any leaking so thought I'd get it all renewed and updated to metal roofing and new gutters - mistake relying on professionals sometimes - sometimes fathers do a better job than people who do it as a business. Thanks for your information though. I didn't realize you could bend the metal that easily, so thanks for showing us. I have tin snips and tools and take after my father in repairing my own things rather than hiring a professional when I can do as well myself. Obviously the new metal roofing job was more than I could do, but can adapt the problem areas for over splash and also get some sealant to fix the leaking end caps. Will get some gutter guard netting while I am at it to complete the job properly. Great video.

When we built our house they put up guards that were about 3 inches high and a total of 8 inches long ( 4 inches in each direction. ) They might as well have put up nothing. I followed your video and made 2 guards and they look great! Thank you so much.

Nice video - that's what I need. I wish people who installed my gutters thought about this.

After some expensive porch/walkway repairs due to erosion I watched the rain fall off my moms roof to see what was happening. Once I saw what was needed I searched for a solution and found your video, thanks. I now know what to do to FINALLY fix her problem!

Hi Eric. Thank you so much for the comment. If you are on facebook and have time would you like Steadman's Rain Gutters. If you have any more questions on my web site rain-gutter-guide.com there is a section for questions; just feel free to ask. I have enjoyed helping people all over. Appreciate you taking the time out to let me know how this fixed your moms situation. Have a great week, Jim

I live in a very wooded neighborhood. My Splash guards were the worst debris catchers. Leaves and seeds quickly buildup causing water, snow and ice backups. Not even gutter guards helped prevent this problem, unless you could clean the splash guards every week from August through December, maybe. I took down all the splash guards. Works better now in my opinion.

All you need to do is score the front part of the gutter with very sharp knife right above where the flat straight part ends about 3/4 of an inch from bottom then you fold off the top excess and you have a ready made guard just install it directly onto your hangars instead of the gutter lip that way no sealing at all
@glenrees4072

The problem with this method, and I speak from experience here. is that the water hits the splash guard with such force it splashes back under the shingles and the eave soaking and rotting them over time.

Yeah that's what I was worried about.. Is there any way to solve that or fix that problem or is there another way to accomplish this? Or do they make something else that doesn't allow that to happen? Thanks appreciate it

Interesting though wouldnt that cause back splash on to the fascia boards if the rain came down hard ultimately in time rotting out the wood?

Only needed if the gutter is a special color and you dont have that roll if it's a white gutter just use trim metal

I just installed some gutter on my new home including an inside miter corner. The builder has a shingle sitting at the end of the valley to help let water drain away from the house. It’s got a slight bend lying at the end of my roof valley. Do I remove this shingle now that I have the splash block or should I leave it? It has shingles covering the roof, this is there to help water get pushed away from the house just a little bit.

Your video is very good. I was expecting you add sealant all over the gutter and splash area. On my opinion there will be a leakage through the not sealed area.

How would you suggest a homeowner DIYer bend a 90 degree angle on the flange without that device you used?
@josephbohme7917
@josephbohme7917 6 лет назад
Jim, what about making all the leaves go right into the gutter from now on and never letting them wash out or flow over a screen, if yo do one thing another issue will arise. personally the downspouts should be be enough to carry all the crap thru., but many times they are too small and clog right up if you are not surviving them regularly. Has anybody. Generally the leaves stick to the abrasive tile or shingles- if they were smooth it would be great, but then you could slip if wet.
@Mote78

Joseph Böhme I agree. In my opinion the splash guards caused the worst debris buildup of leaves and tree seeds causing water, snow and ice backups. Not even gutter guards helped prevent this problem with the splash guards, unless maybe if you cleaned them every week from August through December. I couldn’t keep up with it on my two story home. I took all the splash guards down. It works better now in my opinion.

I will have a problem with the aesthetics. How about the rain diverters to dispers the water to the further area with punched holes?

@@Mote78 not only that but what people fail to realize if people use leaf guards in their gutters when rain is falling its hitting top of the guards which are splashing back hiiting the fascia boards which in time will rot out.
@pagenix9388

Can you make one and ship it? The process looks simple enough, but I don't have a table saw or whatever you used to create that 90 degree angle, so if you take orders, let me know.

you can run a utility knife down the gutter then bend back and forth and it cuts easily.

@@mjm4ut I think they are talking about scoring the metal so it's got a line it will break on when you bend it.

I read somewhere that instead of attaching it to the front side of the gutter, you’re technically supposed to attach it to backside. That way the water as it comes down the valley hits the guard before going into the gutter. Anyone have thoughts on that?
