I'm here because a heavy rain last week caused really some big damage in a property (inside the building) that I own. I thought it was a roof leak, but the roofer who went out there told me that the gutters were clogged and must have overflowed to cause the damage. I didn't understand how that could be possible. Your video made it quite clear. Thank you. However, it will now cost me several thousand dollars to fix the damage caused by the water. A very expensive lesson.

It really can be. Water is one of the most damaging things to happen to a house. A gutter that works wells is very good for the house, but when it doesn't work right it will cause so much damage. Thank you for watching. Check out hundreds more of our videos at www.aroundthehome.org

I had a Deja vu experience. I decided to find out why my gutters were not draining properly and came across your video. So I put on Vivaldi four season for background. When I started your video I though I was hearing echo when much to my surprise I discovered you had made the same choice. Ironically a good choice in music! Good instruction video, btw.

I truly believe and have lived it. The smallest gutter I would ever have is a 6 inch gutter. It is just worth the difference in the short run and the long run. Just my opinion. Thanks for the Video.

Question when you say don’t use a blower on a roof well my bad but I live in the country where you can rarely get a tradie I’m not young as well as I have a 4 disc fusion in my lower back so I have to do it myself and I have cleaned the corner spout and dried it with the blower best I can and used a towel then siliconed it but it’s still leaking underneath the corner and this was actually caused by a tradie originally as we have tank water and he changed things while working on our house now I can’t stop the water pooling up and dripping down and have very minimal room to change the flow. I’m not in America so sometimes when a product or type of object is used we might not have the same in Aust.

What they could do is they could upgrade to bigger downspouts and if you want to arm the next time if you’re over there or if you still live in the same house move the splash block from the downspout underneath of the downspout side splashes nicely

Actually the downspout and gutter was clean. It just couldn't handle the volume of water with the way it was designed.

My gutter downspout is connected to a neighbors(townhouse). It's roughly 30ft. with a downspout on her side(up higher) she's up the hill a bit. And a downspout on my side. Her down spout has fallen off her gutter. I'm seeing a lot of rain leaking (behind) or where the gutters edge connects on the outer edge, not inner. Doesn't look like it's my downspout. Definitely rain coming "out" where it shouldn't be. I have a gutter cleaning company coming this week-not sure it needs it. What are your thoughts?
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 3 года назад
Well, I'm thinking I would really like a breakfast sandwich right now. Sorry, you asked. Let's work backwards on this. First your question about if your gutter needs to be cleaned. I honestly wouldn't have a clue unless I saw it. If you have large trees around your home at all, then you probably do. But it also sounds like your gutters need some other attention. If your neighbors downspout is down then of course that needs immediate attention. As far as the other problems that you are describing, I really can't get a clear picture from your description. And don't try to keep explaining it, because without being there, there is no way to really know what is going on. Your gutter cleaning company that is already coming is probably your best first step into troubleshooting your gutters. And since you share the physical building, being a townhouse, you need to get the other owners on board as well. Because like I said in the video, well working gutters are great, but gutters that are not working well will cause a lot of damage to your home. There are many variables to a well working gutter system that you need someone with experience to trouble shoot them. This is not something that I can properly do in a video. The purpose of my gutter videos are to bring awareness to the homeowner so they can spot problems and get someone there to address them before too much damage is done. So, I do wish you good luck with your project and I hope that it is easily fixed. Thank you for watching. Check out hundreds more of our videos at www.aroundthehome.org

You would be surprised how often gutters can be clogged when someone lives without any trees within miles. I have seen just about anything u can imagine clogging gutters. Birds, squirrels, etc. Will carry different items up onto roof or into gutters which don't fit down the down spout. Also predators can carry their prey onto roofs and their bones will clogg the downspout hole. Another common thing especially for new construction is roofing nails, shingle pieces, or other scraps will work their way into gutters creating a dam.

Yep...I was surprised just today with a clogged gutter. It filled to the point of overflowing backwards into the sofet, then behind the siding to the lower level where the top plank of my basement sliding glass door sat. The water then dripped on the inside of my finished basement. Saw this dripping from the top of my sliding door onto the floor. And yes, there is not a tree tall enough to put leaves there. But the leaves were still there. A small clump covering the opening to the downspout. Once I pulled that small clump out, the gutter drained and the leak stopped almost immediately thereafter. Gutter helmet time!

A single 3x4 downspout will drain up to 434 gallons of water per minute. That calculates to 650 square feet of roof area. That’s 6.5 roof squares a roof square is 10ft x 10ft. Adding a downspout to the gutter that is on the front of the garage on the same corner of the house bringing it down the front and allowing it to drain down the driveway would solve the problem of overflow but not standing water in the gutter if it’s not sloped probably.

Miter is leaking and the downspout isn’t low enough. Too many corners for the water to have to go around. You are exactly right. Need atleast one more DS on that section.

So the answer (for your neighbor) is just to add another down spout or to enlarge the existing? Everything is fine on mine but it overflows during big rains, trying to find the solution!!

The other day during a heavy rain, i found water dripping down my ceiling fan fixture. Went to the attack and saw no leaks from the roof. Lifted up the insulation and it was only wet underneath. Next day i went on the roof. No missing shingles but downspout was clogged. Is it possible for water to come in the attic as a resulf of the gutters being clogged?. It hasnt rained since i cleared the gutter but im worried of it dripping into the ceiling fan/ light fixture in my son's room again..thanks in advance
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 5 лет назад
It is possible for water to run in through the eaves and up a rafter a little ways. Then it will drip down and pool at a low spot, like your ceiling fan. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to stop by our website www.greatwhiteninja.com

Yes, there are a number of ways water may have come in other than the very top of your roof. Without seeing some detailed pictures of the surrounding areas it would be hard to know for sure but a few guesses could be: 1) A hole in your fascia behind your gutter that only leaks when the gutter fills in a hard rain, possibly even from a gutter nail that was removed or rotted out. 2) Water that is traveling from another location which is NOT directly above your son's room where the leak is coming through the ceiling fan box. 3) The downspout could have essentially backfired and shot the water back in an upward direction through your soffit area. This actually happened to me. One of my downspouts were clogged by a rat's nest once, so when it would rain the water had nowhere to go but back up through the seams of the spout shooting water in our attic. the water was shooting back out through the seem about 3-4 feet like a garden hose with decent pressure lol. If possible, go back in the attic and follow the water trail. Even though it is dry now, it normally leaves a light brown trail where it was once wet on the attic side of the drywall.

What size do you recommend 5 inches or 6 inches ?
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 4 года назад
Well that really depends on so many things. The size of your gutter, the pitch of your roof, and the length of the span between downspouts. If you are having trouble with your gutters, I would recommend talking to a local pro. Thank you for watching, and please share. Check out hundreds more of our videos at www.aroundthehome.org/

Is normal than my gutters retaining some water like half inch?after rained and staying on it for days.
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 Год назад
It is not uncommon, but it is not correct. Many gutters are installed without the correct slope so they can't drain out. If the gutters are installed correctly with a good slope and enough downspouts, there will be no standing water in them after the rain.

So basically your saying the gutter design in whole is a inferior design. My issue is its no gravity added. The gutter are catching rain water at leveled.
@joshmatthewson7154

I 100% guarantee you that some debris is clogged perfectly over the downspout drop. Even though that is way too many square of roofing for one spout, there's no way the water would be almost at the top of that gutter if the probably 2.5 or 2 3/4 inch opening is totally open.. I own a gutter company lol....I know water was coming out at a good rate, but it should have been coming out twice as fast..
@AroundTheHome1
@AroundTheHome1 2 года назад
You could be right, but I believe that I checked this one after the rain and found no clog. There was another time that it was clogged a couple of years later. But real lesson here is to keep an eye on your home and make sure everything is working right.

I always try to clean the gutters around my house each year before winter when it starts raining. Worst is when neighbours have huge trees and the wind direction blows across my roof, can only ask them nicely to consider getting some pruning done, or offer to pitch in and show them how it's blocking my drains. Another annoyance is when a place has those palm trees that grow several stories tall with nut clusters that drop several times a year (they were really popular in the 80s and 90s when people wanted to have a swimming pool or little 'tropical paradise' style garden). There are these little gutter mesh things people can install over the top to stop leaves and gunk from getting into the gutter, but I find if they aren't secured properly they will blow away in the wind, or very heavy rain will actually wash them out of place - if they're cut into small enough sections they can even go into the down pipe.

At my front door I have different roof angles. I have trees around my house. I have always had trouble in that location and twice a year I have them cleaned out. So I heard leaf guard guaranteed no clogs. What a joke. I spent a lot of money cause they said they will clean out. Well they are telling me that last time they came out they were not clogged that it was the debris on roof. If they are not clogged they will charge me to clean. With their gutters they have a flap on down spout to open and clean out. They are always full. Talking to man on the phone he asked how the water was pouring over? I think they are trying to keep me from calling or make money from me to clean that area. I am planning on being at my house when they come so I can look. What are some things I need to know and see if they are clogged when I go up and look? This company has been a big pain and don’t back up what they sell. If it is clogged how would it poor over? That is a question he asked me how it pours over. Thank you for you video

Sorry for the delay in answering. I did not see this comment right away. That is a lot to unpack. First thing that I can guarantee is that there are no guarantees in life. So, that is a flag right there. Next, it does not have to be clogged to overflow. It can just be too much water for the gutters / downspouts to handle. Also, gutter guards can clog, just depends on what kind of trees / plants you have around. Also gutter guards do guard the gutter, but they slow the rate of water they can handle. So simply put there is never a perfect answer, always a give and take between cost, performance, and promises.

Another downspout will 100% fix the issue. The actual problem is the water to the left of the downspout outlet is blocking the water to the right, slowing the flow down. The water to the right is being help back. The quickest fix is to add a downspout in front. If not wanted because of location, that seems to be what homeowner wanted. This is the solution, make sure the right is properly aligned. The downspout needs to be moved to the front of the gutter secured in the same location . So the water from the side gutter has to go around the miter to the outlet. this will slow the water down so the front gutter wins the outlet for max flow😉👌
