I love how he casually puts seeing the statue of David, the Mona Lisa, and a watching Doc Watson sing and play on the same level. I happen to agree with Guy about Doc Watson.
@zelmo999
@zelmo999 Год назад
On the same level to Guy but he notes the difference. He can see the David & Mona Lisa, Doc was blind. Guy's being fair w/"I have heard Doc Watson play Columbus Stockade Blues." And yer damn right right he did it on purpose.

Don this song was in a couple different ways a tribute to Doc Watson. He was referring to Dublin, Ireland. It started as a trribute to Docs version of Columbus Stockade Blues. The singer in that song starts the story wishing he was someplace else. Supposedly Columbus Stockade Blues was fashioned after an old song called Handsome Molly. That song started out the same as the other two. The story teller wishing he was anywhere else. (I believe he was in Dublin wishing he were in London) Doc did his version of Col Stockade Blues to about the same tune as Handsome Molly and Guy as part of the tribute used a similar tune (just a bit slower I think) in his song. What is beautiful and amazing to each of us is personal. What we might consider art. For Guy (and many more of us) Doc's rendition of C S B is truly a beautiful work of art. Stay safe and well.

Guy Clark was one of the kings (some say THE king) of the Texas troubadour movement. His writing is among the best...the way he surgically separates human emotion and then assigns words and phrases to elicit a particular mood. Very few in history have the mastery and understanding of this word-mind-heart-soul connection. I could give some background on the places and references he makes in the song but that would be kinda missing the point...

My favorite guy song. My dad took me to a guy show when I was 14 and it’s the only show I’ve ever been to where you could literally hear a pin drop in the crowd. Even when he was older he had everyone’s full attention. Greatness!

You should take a listen to a more fun song is "Texas 1947" and "Let Him Roll"...Let him roll is an outstandingly sad song, and likely true, knowing him as I did. He claimed it was about someone else, but the wink he gave me told me otherwise.

I love this song. Guy is one of my favorite songwriters. His version of “Come from the heart” which was written by his wife is brilliant. My favorite song of his is “Magnolia wind”. It should remind you of someone you can’t live without. Also, Doc Watson’s “Sittin on top of the world “ is great.

Guy was a master of his art as you can see from this great performance. I think he was probably referencing Dublin, Texas as opposed to the capital city of Ireland. Another great reaction, Don, and keep rockin' dat country.

That was great! Love this song! I’m not positive but I like to think he’s talking about Dublin, Texas. I grew up close to Dublin and I know the town well because I probably drank about 10,000 “Dublin Dr Peppers” which were made with real cane sugar. Brings back memories.

Unfortunately he's talking about Ireland...him and Steve Earle frequented the country alot. But in all fairness, since Mr. Clark wasn't specific, the folks of Dublin Tx have every right to claim its about them (and many do!)

David Emswiler that’s cool if it’s about Ireland or if there is still some mystery about the song years after the man has left us. Maybe Steve can clear it up in a comment if he reads this... just goin through some RU-vid videos of Guys and found Mcmurtrys cover of “cold dog soup”. Man that would be a reaction to behold.

So much emotion in Guy Clark's songs. You've got to check out Jason Isbell's cover of "Desperadoes Waiting for a Train" at the tribute to Guy Clark concert. Sadly, Clark wasn't able to attend because he was in the hospital and he died shortly thereafter. But its one of the best covers I've ever heard ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sOOH8shmKnQ.html
