First,HerriBest you are my favorite reaction person. I listen to a lot of music with you. Your reactions to Bob Dylan are best. Guy was much younger when he recorded this for a album. Guy is a tremendous singer/songwriter. Guy was the most authentic singer/song.writers I’ve known. As was Townes Van Zandt. Susanna Clark wrote song but did not record. Emmylou Harris covered her songs. Take a listen to “She Ain’t Goin Nowhere “. Guy always said that was his favorite song that he wrote. Rita Ballou, Dublin Blues , Let Him Roll.
Harri, just a little background. Guy, his wife Susanna and fellow singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt lived together in a strange triangular relationship in the '80s. She moved out but Clark never filed for divorce. After Townes died in 1997, they reunited but their final years together were difficult to say the least.
John Chu, in a video of Guy and a group of friends, with Steve Earle singing The Mercenary Song, was the woman sitting next to Guy, Susanna? I always fancied that the paintings on the walls were hers, and particularly loved the denim shirt one. I liked thinking Guy still had that painting in his home. Hoping you have seen the video I am referring to.
If I'm not mistaken Blaze Foley often hanged around Townes, Townes apparently felt bad for blaze because his wife had crashed blaze's car, and also because blaze was basically a crazy homeless songwriter.
Clark wrote a song "Desperados Waiting for a Train" that was popularized by Jerry Jeff Walker. Check out Walker's studio version to get a different side of Clark's writing ability.
I think, My Favorite Picture of you, was probably like you said, a significant emotional mind searing moment in time that represented their relationship to him captured in an a single old photograph. Maybe not the most flattering moment or image, but one meaningful to him - for whatever reasons - mostly only known to him. Like all good songs, somewhat left up to the listeners interpretation and meaning. He told a story about the story, but I don't think he told the whole story. I was wondering how many great songs we have never heard were stored in those tapes on the shelves behind him. When I think of Guy Clark, I think of Old Friends, the song with Emmylou Harris, her harmony with him was just beautiful - as she is.
I'm wondering if Mr. Clark considered all his mental pictures of her as his favorites. Is it hard to pick just one when you love someone deeply? Each one is our favorite ... until we see/think of another one! 💖💖
Great reaction…. IMO Guy hung onto that picture cause in the moment of the picture she was ready to leave. BUT they both managed to stay together. I do believe that Guy Clark was not an easy person to be in a relationship with. Plus at the time of the video you review, his wife is long dead and he is now old. (Guy Clark has now passed)
Well, on a kind of related topic, my favourite song with the title "Picture of You" is a fantastic, melodic country-pop hit from 1962 by Joe Brown .. I think you would love it, Harri ! .. Please check it out when you get the time .. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EE-EFKv1qn8.html .. Cheers, Wayne
@@markoehler2752 excuse me I never said he did, I simply stated he's not the best singer and one of the best songwriters, well that's certainly debatable
