This satisfying video shows a man pulling huge multicoloured crystals out of a boiling pot.
Kazushige Nagashima, from Japan, is a bismuth crystals enthusiast who has gained a following on social media by uploading videos and pictures of his homemade creations.
Bismuth crystals are stunning objects with a complex geometric form and they can be easily ‘grown’ at home.
The crystals are also rainbow-coloured from the oxide layer that forms on them once they get in contact with the air.

The amount of experimentation it takes to get those colors and large stairstep crystals is kind of crazy. I tried for hours to get something even remotely close to resembling a crystal.

it doesnt take color or shaping them you just need the right temperature and crystals will start forming either way its very impressive that he made such big ones

What I want is to know HOW he is doing this. I have been able to make crystals of up to three inches in size. I would like to know how he is controlling the rate of cooling, and what equipment he is using so I can try it myself with some stepped up gear.

awesome! It seems to me that lifting the crystal slowly out of the melted bismuth, new crystals are formed underneath and the whole crystal formation becomes huge. Surely, though, there's a lot of bismuth in there and this means a big financial investment. The density of Bismuth is almost 10g/cm3. To fill a pot like that, he probably needs 20 kg or more of raw material. Finally it seems that he keeps it warm just at melting point, maybe not switching off the heat source completely or keeping the pot a couple of cm above the hot stove without touching it: just enough to keep it warm long enough. There's no insulation around the pot, therefore he's using some other technique. The big volume helps, of course, to make it cool at slower rate

If you think about ytou really only lose out on the cost of time and heating the metal. You can just recycle what you don't like and keep trying
@3dChris

that pot has over 150 lbs of bismuth in it, easily. This is very dangerous and should be done only by people that know what they are doing. Bismuth expands when it cools, and 150 lbs of bismuth could rip open a thin walled pot, spilling the remaining molten bismuth out.

@dorneybrooke4686

they poke a little dot in the middle of the pot starting the crystal from there. crazy eh if the whole pot cools youre indeed right itll harden all around aswell. and you can see how he hovers it for a second to drip.. hes also letting the surface of the metal to cool evenly so the oxide arent shocked as it freezes or solidifies. He knows what hes doing love to see it

A worthwhile hobby- filling an eight inch pot takes roughly eight liters or 78 Kg of bismuth. At $ 3.30 a pound, that's about $600 worth. The large crystal clusters however, generally weigh 4 to 8 pounds, so at most $ 25 worth of metal must be added after each growth cycle, and the clusters are being retailed for hundreds. by Chinese E-bay crystal merchants
