It's been a few months since Warhammer: The Old World came out, and the popularity of the game has clearly been noticed back at Games Workshop, because they've just teased that the scope of the game is grown and that more content could be on the way.
But what do you think?

I heard it has to do with team evaluation. The AoS team is judged by how well AoS models sell, and the same goes for the Specialist Games section. So, by limiting overlap, GW higher ups can more easily see how each team does.

@@andrewbakescakes9684 not really. AoS sold A LOT of miniatures to people who wanted them for the old world in the last 3 months (I’m one of them). One of the questions people have is if these purchases will go to boost AoS even if they were not made for AoS.

I gotta correct you on a point Tom, yes it’s not a mainline game it is however an official specialist game. And it could be the case in the future they stock it in their specialist section. Also staff aren’t not allowed to teach you how to play, it’s just theirs no starter set for them to demo with so they don’t actually have anything to teach you with yet.
@TabletopTom
@TabletopTom 3 месяца назад
You’re absolutely right - that is a better way to phrase it. My point, though, was simply to contrast ToW to 40k and AoS, and the fact that GW has been really surprised how this tier of game has performed, given it was largely a passion project by some Forge World staff. Warhammer sales staff were telling independent retailers as much when the latter were trying to restock during that launch weekend. Personally, though, I don’t think we’ll see Starter Sets (they suggested they have no plans for those at Warhammer Fest 23) and the closest they’ve got to those are the new Batallion boxes, which are still missing rules and the like. Now, while plans do change - the prevalence of resin means that (like the other specialist games), it will likely be there in the background while 40K and AoS take up most of the stores. But Warhammer stores have very limited space anyways, and regional reps have been very clear with their expectations on how much of stores is dedicated to 40k, AoS and other boxes games - and they’ve been very clear that ToW isn’t to be stocked over those main sellers. As for teaching - again, anything can change but, what is really interesting, is that my local Warhammer staff say they’d hate that (it takes too long to teach, and feel they would struggle to convert those to sales). At the end of the day, those stores are for converting lessons into customers, and ToW doesn’t fit that model as well as 40K and AoS do right now with their Spearhead and Combat Patrol sets. We’ll see though - and anything is possible. In many ways, I hope I’m wrong there. 🤞🏻

I feel like starting small with the option to expand, rather than over-promising and under-delivering, is a smart play. Themed 'seasons' that cover particular historical events are a great way of bringing legacy factions in. After the current armies are released, culminating in 'the Great War against Chaos', the Skaven could be brought in with a release/season/campaign focused on the second Great Council of 13 consolidating their power and once more turning their attention to the world above rather than the costly internecine warfare they'd waged amongst themselves for the preceding two centuries. Lizardmen could be brought in with Daemons during the week the sun turned jet black in 2321, where daemons manifested throughout all of Lustria, or along with the Dark Elves for an event about the Druchii raid on the Citadel of Dusk. That sort of thing. Means they don't have to do everything all at once, they can take their time to get things right as they come out. "There is only one way to eat an elephant: one bite at a time"

Competitive try-hards are what killed Fantasy in 8th... The same people who bitched about the game requiring too many models & being too expensive, were the same toolbags pushing for 2750 - 3.2k pts to be the accepted "tournament standard". The loudest & whiniest crowd calling for "balance" were the same mouth-breathers who would only run the filthiest whombo-combo lists imaginable & hopping on the latest power creep bandwagons. (*coughHighElvescough) In the end, Fantasy simply became a very toxic & expensive investment. The infamous 'Ard Boyz "incident" involving GW having to give away a 3,000pts Gnoblar army which was then "returned & exchanged for other product" at various local GW stores was such a perfect example of just how god-awful the Fantasy community had become.

I think we might see some of the legacy factions come to TOW when the core units that overlap with AOS finish getting updated (e.g. ogre gluttons + leadbelchers, skinks etc). I think Ogre Kingdoms and Lizardmen are most likely. Chaos Dwarfs are probably out of the question since they're basically confirmed for AoS. Think dark elves are unlikely since AOS is geared to bring back Malekith, my guess in 2026 or 27. Honestly, I think we're more likely to see Kislev and Cathay get models+rules than VC and Skaven (yes, even with the 'no Cathay and Kislev for now' WarCom post). One of the rumours I've seen around for 4e AOS is that one of the model design team's goals is to replace the main models that overlap with WFB with new updated AOS sculpts. The happy consequence of this is some of those legacy factions might be able to make their way back into TOW. That's all a rumour, though. Who knows what's actually going on in Nottingham.

Well - if they want to reintroduce some factions, all they need to do is to release a DLC called "The New World" - with Dark Elves of Naggaroth, Lustria's Lizardmen, Sartosa Vampires (vampire counts) and Pestilens Skaven (Lustria). And since Lustria and Naggaroth are so far away, they don't have to stick with TOW timeline, they can introduce new narrative in different times.

Solid reasoning. One point that was missed is the rumour that GW also transitioned from the Old World as it was too difficult for them to establish IP over the factions. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but if it is it could be prove a challenge to them investing in the Old World completely. This is especially the case when 3D printing makes generic dwarves, elves and so on much more accessible and able to be produced more quickly at a fraction of the cost.

I think GW was underestimating how much the bad management and real lack of exploring stuff to general people was a contributor in Fantasy not being that popular. The rules def are more complex than AoS's, but I think the amount of people turned off by that are a lot smaller than they realized. I joined the hobby a few year in Total Warhammer 2, and i certainly love my Sylvanneth and Seraphon armies i've built, I don't dislike AoS, I just think they seem to treat it as competition for Fantasy in ways that are kind of silly. Beyond one setting using some of the lore ideas of the other (while changing most character into wholly different people lol) it's a different setting and a different wargame experience.

I don't think the lag of some Faction in the game for now has anything to do with these Factions being prominently featured in AOS. If this was the case, it would be executed way more consequent than it is now. Besides Beastmen and some Chaos units almost the whole range of Gloomspite Gitz is playable as nightgoblins in TOW. This seems to be forgotten most of the time this non overlapping AOS/TOW discussion comes up since nightgoblins are not a major faction in The Old World. I know that we can expect some older nightgoblins plastic kits to come back but this will not include things like the Arachnarok Spider, Spidercavalry and Sqiugrelated stuff. All of these are included in the ravening hordes book. Same goes for Savage Orc's/Orruks wich are also includes as upgrades for some basic Orc Units. You simply will have to buy AOS models if you want to include them in TOW. There is actually no sign that this will change in the future. So there we have "overlapping" wich seems to be permanent for an official supported TOW and AOS faction/s. Even some Ogre Kingdoms Units are included in the Orc's and Goblins Arcane Journal as mercanaries. And this will just be released by the end of the week. ;-) My guess is that the supported faction at the start of TOW are only there for a more precise massurement of sales for the start of the release to have a clue for future releases roadmap. This makes especially sense when you take a look at the starting factions which never had an official appearence in AOS. So my hopes are, that when everythings goes the way it goes now we will get more well known and beloved factions back. There are actually no economical reasons for not doing so if sales are going well. There will be exclusive Factions for both games anyways. I'm curiose what your thoughts about this are. Sorry for my sloppy englisch. I'm just a german dude loving warhammer. ;-)

The “you need 2k points to play” is a proof GW didn’t understand the idea of promoting the game at different point levels and community pushed for moar minis on the table as opposed to actually having fun at the table. Want to play? Get 750pts of models - essentially a Spearhead equivalent. No unit can be larger than 1.5x their starting size (so up to 7 of 5+ cav/infantry, 4 of 3+ monsters, 15 of 10+ infantry and 30 of 20+ infantry) or over 250pts and army needs to follow the usual % restrictions too. If you feel your unit is accidentally unjustifiably hit by those rules, have a chat with your opponent and agree on something reasonable. You can only have one character - he’s the general, can’t be wizard of level 3+ and can’t cost more than 150pts total. Go have fun and paint more minis, it doesn’t need to be competitive but “official” guidance would help.

As far as legacy armies coming back, GW quite literally said their initial founding goal for the game was to delete Skaven and Vampire Counts from the game, and then they chose a time period that would allow for that and then went forward from there. As such there's zero chance of them coming back because GW was very specifically making a point of deleting them wholesale. That was the entire goal.

I wouldn't discount Skaven or Vampire Counts coming back. Both factions are extremely popular within the Warhammer Fantasy community - look at Vermintide, Thanquol in Gotrek & Felix books, CA Skaven obsession and the appeal of the VC aesthetic. Age of Sigmar only started becoming more popular once they started feeding back into the Warhammer Fantasy aesthetic. And they have only been going out their way to separate all their systems. On top of all that the video games they don’t care about that much since there is no actual evidence it actually leads to direct model sales. Avoiding overlap between factions is stupid. They could literally sell the same kits to different playerbases. It's basically free money, but they can't see it.

Suggesting GW cares that a player may need to buy too many miniatures to play TOW is ridiculous. Their whole gaming model is based on continually releasing new minis, and when that doesn't work, change the rules to make you buy once poor parts of the army that are suddenly good.

I think a better way to put is that ‘GW cares that you’re not so intimidated about the size and cost of an army, that you walk out of the store altogether’ - that’s why we now have Spearhead and Combat Patrol formats (they’ve very accessible for new players, and easy to learn). I think we often talk about this from our perspective, and forget that - at the end of the day - these decisions are often (but not always) based on how easy it is to persuade a mum or dad of a 12 year old to spend £100 on plastic models and paints (and that’s just for starters).

lol- the "sold out" products are sold out because: a) they produce them in very little numbers b) OOP models reached absolutely crazy price points on e-buy Thats it!

the age of sigma overlap argument doesn't make sense. if that was the reason then why put out wood elves all the forest spirit units are a age of sigma faction and most of the elves are part of cities of sigma same goes for dwarfs tho I think some of that is redundant with the new cites range but then the slayers are also their own factions and I think some things like the gyrocopter's kinda cross over to the over lords then why make an exception for chaos warriors? and why would cross compatible kits be a bad things they have literally done it with demons since rouge trader days? I think they deliberately limited them selves to nine factions as a trial run in the same way they did for necromunda and to an extent blood bowl if the game didn't sell they could scrap it their with out looking like they had cut their losses and ran and since it has been vary successful so far they can plan for a second release like they did with necromunda and blood bowl. which would include a new core box release with a revised rule book, and they will probably move to more traditional army books which will make the arcane journals obsolete, they could also give us an old school magic expansion with more refined magic schools and spells.

The wood elves are no longer in cities of sigmar. Eventually all of the fantasy era models will be dropped from aos and moved to old world.

I need some giant quotation about the "success" of odl world, something more than, model sold out on the site, that don't actually tell us anything based on how we have 0 insight on how much was produced.

@@gwell2118 I wouldn't say that. Old World marketing lead to a lot of negativity around the new game. The removal of half the Warhammer Fantasy factions was just the icing on the cake for some. Many of the negative comments revolved around seeing Old World as nothing more than a cash grab. The changes to the lore and setting, especially through the first "Old World" Black library novel further bolstered the negativity.

I was so happy when the Old World finally became a reality and I was all in to start Night Gobbo Army until GW stated that most of the units would be cast using their original molds using resin or even units that were last seen cast in metal.... Then I saw the Orc Big'uns models and my heartsank. Despite GW's expectation that Old world players will purchase Old World units in their original sculpts, a lot of us are already using AoS equivalents since they look so much better. Some of the Orc units that contain Boars have varying degrees of the quality of their sculpts, so if AoS has an equivalent, layers will likely use the most updated versions if they look better from AoS. Some units still hold up incredibly welll, for example, most of the Trroll Sculpts look fantastic, especially River Trolls and the Troll Hag...Night Gobbos are staple of the Gloomspite Gits in all of their Squiggy glory, I was sad that I didn't pick up the Squig Avalanche Army box to save for the Old World Release...my local gaming store even had 1 copy left over and he took it off the shelf and admitted he placed it ouot back and had no plans to sell it off the shelf which I found frustrating. Then there is he issue of which books are needed to play a Night Gobbo army which I find confusing and instantly got the impression that its a lot which means the initial up front buy in will require at least 3-4 books? Maybe? If I could have, Skaven were going to be my first Old World army considering their updating the range and they have some really cool Underworld teams. But GW insists on sticking by their original statement, especially with Skaven saying in legacy mode... Yet I still haeve a love for the old school Dwarven aesthetic with their beards growing all the way down to their feet plus you gota love their Helicopters, Cannons, Organ Cannons, Crossbowmen, Long Beard Vets, Rangers, RunePriests, Engineers, etc.. It seems to be already outdoing 30k which I assumed would happen if they ever brought back Fantasy...

GW uses artificial scarcity as marketing ploy. So any time you hear They won't do this, they won't do that... It's opposite day. Always. There's not one darn line that they don't eventually intend to bring back. They just jerk the chains to see people holler skip and yowl. As here.

Secondly, I talked to the commanders of my skaven army and they told me they don't give two rosy reds whether Nottingham decides to support their conquest of the Old World or nye. They told me in ratspeak that they prefer the rules that I homebrewed for them and they prefer the company of ratmen I kitbash and models we make using our Own intrinsic creativity, so Nottingham can just go right ahead administering to the needs of the lemmings and making rules, nerfing this and buffing that to increase sales (i mean uhm excuse me "balancing" nudge nudge wink wink ...you bet.) Lol. I mean please...make rats illegal. Yeah right.

Keeping “Core” - it’s not in AoS, someone should be fired There is no cannibalization here - it just will stop players not being to play at tournaments, so increasing the use of 3rd party and 3d in regular games ; ergo, no GW sales Would love to see Mordhiem - but they already have a skirmish game

I think more people should stop worrying about that's the latest release and stick to play a game they love. Get the minis you like and use them how you want. Why not making a custom mercenary unit in Old World using Warcry models (heresy, i know), why not using Empire models to represent your Cities of Sigmar (oh wow what a leap right) Enjoy AoS2.0? Play that Enjoy 40k 7th ed? Great, play that! Have fun put there guys, keep bitterness at bay by collecting the _models_ that you like, not the game. The game is an excuse for collecting 🤫😉

Being sold out isnt something to say its that popular - so much stuff is sold out on GW site and it is down to the well documented issues they have with supply and demand currently. I played fantasy, i was there when it died and i was there playing sigmar when that started - i have no desire to go back to rank and flank, but im glad that those who do get to play with thier toys.

Definitively would be interested in a skirmish game in the WHF setting. Not a fan of the rank and flank style of the old world and also a bit worried about the time commitment of such a game. Basically, I want warcry in the cooler setting :D

In my view the issue with 8th was that they made both 40k and Fantasy bigger in scale and more killy. 40k and AoS havent really changed from that philosophy. Thats why its not a surprise to me that the old world is going down well. Its what a lot of us wanted even during 8th
