Just bought the Cannon L in silver and love it. Really comfortable on long drives. Driven about 4 hours straight and did not feel any aching whatsoever. Almost up to my first service now. Was also told that It comes with Capped servicing.
I have a cannon x and I think that it's the best truck on the market today, took all other trucks for test drive, and still decided to get the cannon x. Saved plenty of $$$$$ and got a good truck. Best truck on the road,
@wayne, can u use android auto/apple car play now? My dealer told me to wait to update the system so that i can use android auto in my x,they said gwm is paying for that in model x.
@@LeonSteyn55 a gps navigator is highly recommended even we have android auto because it is too easy to get caught by cameras in using phone when driving nowdays,in rural areas even telstra has no reception there, mobile phone navigation is not available without reception.

All the haters out there , Must be great to not buy anything made in China , one question - how do you do it ? Because if it’s not made in China most of the parts came from China
@@exploringsydneyandbeyond9059 Hay Steve , The CCP hate us hate Australia cancelled our Free Trade agreement, actually just decided to not honour it. They let their own people freeze because they refused to take our coal exports. Plenty of happy new owners on the Facebook owners group, no bad issues unlike the Ldv T60. Really nice in the flesh and surprisingly good fit and finish
From SA🇿🇦..This brand has improved so much🥰 I drove the steed for more than 7 years...I'd like you to review the new Canon/P-Series with other pick ups/bakkies/utes. Kindly compare it with the Hilux,D-Max,Ranger,Triton,Amarock,Navara,Mahindra,Fullback... Maybe things like Tug of War, Mud and Gravel while carrying a load, pulling of trailer's, Drag race, Break test, etc. Would really love to see that.
@@nonyanamarite1430 they are already shivering as many Toyota and Ranger fan boys are asking many P series owners how it is and how sales are doing which are excellent so far in Souh Africa, IN FACT many owners of Isuzu,Hilux and Ranger have already traded in their bakkies for the P series.
@@choppanz6119 I love it. You would never know it had a 2.0Lt engine. It drives very well and has alot of power. Still trying to work out all the safety features and learning to not put the wipers on instead of the blinkers. So far, so good. No complaints.
@@palladiumblue2539 I just bought one too... In blue.. Can't wait to get it in a few days time!!! Pretty much everyone I've showed the picture of it to loves the look of it. They can't guess what it is...
@@palladiumblue2539 how’s the fuel consumption? South African market doesn’t have much spec and info but it’s selling well. Dealers has no idea about the specs lol
This one give you warranty, plus, better and more lux features for your staff to enjoy it while driving it. I would choose this one than old ute. Especially, you do know what has the old ute experienced in her life.
They have sold over 1,000,000 of these in China alone! I think they would have sorted the bugs out by now... Fact is, these are the future, and the Malaysian built 'rest' will have to drop their price. Thank you GWM
That mid level spec pricing for all that equipment is prettly bloody sharp, coupled with this review this is at the top of my ute list to consider. I've always wanted a Ranger but the money saved is significant.
$20k difference? Hmmm thinkit might ne a lot more. Ye sI am looking at the 2022 Wildtrak ranger...expecting it to be $75K...if I can get one in 12 months after release...hence why I am looking at an option $30k less... No not worried about resale as will be equivalent to purchase in todays market, only looking to hold for 3 years, max 5, all in warranty period. Is it perfect, no...will it do the job , yes....can I get my camper traler with the difference in price ? yes very close... Do I love the new 2022 ranger Yes but I will not be able to have one due to market conditions. If this is available in the colour I want, yes will drop in cash (without the loan a ranger will require) my hard earned cash....!
You bluff yourself...its a piece of junk....there is no way under the sun you can compare this thing with a Toyota or a Ford. Not even the Chinese buy these junk..they go straight and buy a Toyota.
@@truth-Hurts375 Have you owned both these vehicles to make such a comment declaring the GWM P-Series junk? The sentiment around these comments are not to say Toyota is bad and GWM is better...not at all. By all accounts Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger are great bakkies as is the GWM P-Series at it's price point. When Toyota arrived on South Africa soil in 1966 the same comments were made then about the Japanese products as are being made by you today...time will tell but until you have owned either it would be prudent (smart) not to pass judgement.
I was in China just before the pandemic and their car industry is huge. Talking to a car enthusiast there he pointed out which cars were rubbish, which were good and which were very good. People would be amazed if they knew just what cars are being made in China now, cars like Tesla, and Mercedes for a start. China has captured about 90% of the worlds manufacturing and are on track to do the same with the auto market, their combustion engined cars will make a huge impact on other manufacturers sales but their main focus will be electric cars.
Had the choice between the "all" new DMax X and the Cannon X...Chose the Cannon X in preference for MANY, MANY reasons. None was the price factor. Cheers
@@oldeebutgoodee One reason alone AND there are many others......as to WHY: DMax X has still the old Ohms resistance rear blinker and reverse light globes ...YES..in today's day and age where power consumption is of prime importance.....WOW...they had that kind of technology in the 1940s OR the rear vision mirrors IF you have forgotten to manually push the button (on the DMax) to retract the mirrors while parking in a shopping centre...bad luck they stay open while the Cannon will automatically retract when you use the push-button lock the Ute. +++++
There's nothing bad to say about this. People complain that it's made in China but so is the other 90% of the stuff in your house. This is a really good step up got Great Wall. If this goes on, they won't just need to build cars to compete on price. They can sell cars because they're genuinely good
8:06 he always rest his hand on gear selector, accidentally putting into park... Next shoot shows its not even comfortable for him to do that... uhh maybe don't reach forward and extend your arm so your not always resting hand on it??? 😑
They know how to build cars, they build 6 or 7 million a year so that's not the issue, probably dealer support would be my main concern in this country, but it's almost half. The price of a comparative top spec Hilux, that's incredible
Just drove the Cannon L on the weekend. It drives very well. Gearbox is spot on. Plenty of pick up. Very quiet inside. There is turbo lag and in reverse i noticed quite a bit of surging when I was trying to park. I couldn’t get the throttle placement right to smoothly reverse park. Mind you, I’m coming from a 09 Hilux SR5 I’ve had for 5 years. Jumped back in it after the Cannon and it was like returning to the dark ages. Loud, tractor like and rough. I am concerned about GWM build quality but with a 7yr warranty should I be? I also had 5yr fixed price servicing confirmed by the dealer in Brisbane. Going to take it for another albeit longer drive
I bought a cannon x two weeks ago, very happy with the new technology, especially the lane keeping function and the rear ladder makes me easy to load and unload bikes for kids. The zf 8At transmission does a great job,can not feel any lag in shifting,it does satisfy all my routine need and i got my cannon x only 1 week after i paid 990 oz dollars deposit
@@james6969 i did a 5 mins test drive and paid deposit,i know what i want because i drived hilux and triton. now having model x two weeks, very happy with it. Time will tell. I rang dealer this morning about parts, the dealer told me if they have parts in australia, they will arrive in 3 days,if order from overseas, need a month to come.

Have been looking for a ute for a while and have driven all the major brands. Need 1000kg+ payload so that FBT doesn't come into play so that scrubs most of the mid to higher spec utes except for Mazda/Isuzu and Ssangyong XLV. Triton GLS 920kg and Ranger 3.2 XLT Auto 940kg are out of the mix as are the higher spec models. So I drove Cannon-L and Cannon-X. The Cannon doesnt have quite as much 'go' as Triton and Ranger but runs an 8 Speed BorgWarner transmission that works just fine. With 1050kg payload, constant 4wd, rear diff lock and tech that's way above anything else in the market the big question is 'risk' on the new model. Well it comes with 7year warranty and 5yr roadside assist so I've bitten the bullet and ordered an 'X'. Simply can't argue with the value proposition and ROI for a working vehicle that should play well too. Everyone say's "but what about the resale?". Well when a comparable (almost) spec Ranger costs mid-high $60s, the $20K saved and invested more than offsets the resale difference and contributes a big chunk to a trade to the the update model in a few years time. I see the GWM Cannon being to GWM what the iLoad has been to Hyundai, and I think it'll set the cat amongst the pigeons.
But why didn't you review the one with REAL leather seats so that you don't have to emphasize on FAKE leather seats of the LOWER range. Remember the word FAKE has unfairly been taken to be synonymous with the CHINESE as if all the Western countries make is ORIGINAL, which we all know it's not necessarily the case. At the pace the Chinese are going, they are going to be taking over that segment in as early as 10 years, you can mark my words. People that are new on the market who don't have any conservative views will simply continue to go for those Chinese cars as they have done with the Haval. Great review overall.
Funny how some people will still take the time to watch a review of a Chinese-made car only to comment that it's garbage. Very strange. Why waste your time in the first place over garbage?
I was set on a Ranger until I saw how much prices have jumped since Covid. Then I swayed towards a Triton since it is better bang-for-buck. Then I saw this video. Now I might have some more thinking to do. Although I'm unsure on the bigger size and smaller engine compared to the Triton, there is still a hell of a lot of car for the money. Maybe measuring up garage entrance will be the determining factor. And whether or not the genuine accessories such as canopy will work.
Go for it Gavin.. I test drove it its brilliant ..still working hard so I can afford to buy it. It drives like a dream ..its so powerful and luxurious...and the safety specs are more than what you get in a hilux and a ranger. Infact technology overall. Join the GWM P series group on Facebook to see how its storming the Market in South Africa in just 3 months
I bought the Navara last month mate new 2021 models can carry a ton as well as 3.5ton tow for FBT etc. Not as much tech on lower models but a brand that you know
Meh so far, doing pretty well. Especially back home in the country that I'm from (Zimbabwe, Africa) they're selling like hotcakes. Over there, a luxury car that's for the average person would be like a navara. So this thing with it's luxury as well as cheap asking price... Couldn't ask for more.
Great review, Matt. I test drove a Cannon L and was surprised how good it was, that ZF 8 speed really helps mask the small engine keeping it in the power band. Agree with the turbo lag comments but in the GWM Facebook group they say putting it in sport mode gets rid of the lag. After driving the Cannon I got into a new Triton and it felt like stepping back in time 15 years and was soooooo much smaller inside. I think it also beats the LDV T60 by miles. Would I buy one? I'd wait a year or so and follow the FB groups to see what issues arise. I did that with the T60 and I'm glad I did because they have rust and over heating issues etc.
@@james6969 I also sat in the Cannon X. The interior is much nicer than the L with real leather and a tidier looking centre console. That's the one I'd buy. Just look on carsales for what you can get 2nd hand for 41k and you'll be shocked with covid prices!
So its OK, for China to boycott, Australian goods? But its fine for Australians to purchase Chinese goods. Total Hippocracy 👎👎. So much for being Patriotic CARGUIDE. Happy Australia Day Boys 🇦🇺🇦🇺. PS: I'm sure you will justify this review. 🤑🤑🤮🤮
Put in sport and you find that under power feeling with general stop and go driving plus just give it a little push dont put your foot down and it will surprize you
Getting back to the service times, I've bought a few new cars in my time, (I'm OLD) and ALL of them including last years ASX had to get the first service between 1000 and 1500k's, that includes Nissans, Toyota's, Mitsu's etc
Yeah but toyota have the quality, how many of these utes are going to be on the road still in 25 years there is bucket loads of 20+ year old toyotas still going strong.
to be honest , it looks really cool and the 120kw power 2L turbo engine is good enough , especially the price $37990 , 7 years unlimited km warranty , wow
@@julesmarwell8023 Well now that I’ve owned it for 1.5yrs and have 57,000kms racked up on the dial with a mixture of 4WDriving Towing ( 1T Trailer and 2.5T Caravan) Freeway driving around Town driving country roads dirt roads graded and ungraded. Smacked a billion potholes even busting two from copper tyres from hitting pot holes on the Buckets Way NSW and my Ute is going really really well. Nothing is coming loose and falling apart interior and extrerior. My drivers seat hasn’t shown wear unlike my Dmax at the same KM interval. The interior plastics have not warped or separated like they did in the Isuzu. Engine and transmission no failures or differences since new. No oil leaks from the engine diffs trans etc. My fuel economy around town is 9.5L to 10.5L per 100kms on the open road drops to about 8L/100kms The vehicle tows well. And handles loads way better then other Utes in the class. The gearbox and computer work well keeping traction all the time in the wet. Cruise control is excellent You need to educate yourself when it comes to GWM and have a look at the company and it’s design tech… I’ve had nothing but reliability with this vehicle. Anyway have fun in your 30k more expensive Utes under teched and not as safe or strong…
At least, should thanks to GWM to get new chances for used Holden dealers and their staffs, also makes the auto industry more competitive, benefits customers especially for Australia a small right hand steering market.
You're exactly right. GWM expanding its presence in the Australian market will bring benefits to many Australians. It's a shame a lot of people apparently can't understand this
I'm waiting for our 1000km service and hopefully our dealer will have those accessories in. I have ordered them through the dealer. That's the only place to get them ATM.
Im still very scared about what's gonna give at the price.....will the engine, transmission, suspension be working in 10 years time? Thats why im still considering the hilux although expensive without all these gizmos and technology
Might be worth checking Australian and German websites for another Toyp model ute and asking why in a country not selling the GWM Ute is the price the same number in Euros as it is in Australian dollars. Even if you hate the GWM thank them for the almost 30% discount on your new Toy.
I've taken one out for a test drive & was impressed. The rear seats also lift up so you have room for a fridge or a place to keep lock up power tools if you want if you haven't added a canopy etc.
The involvement from the Chinese is only in brand, corporate and management of the brand. The manufacturing systems and technologies, tooling and advisory are all international mainly German, American etc. This goes with all manufacturers. The brands main input is approving of design which is mainly European or outsiders which may not have that chance working for a company at home.
@@yangtaotai well cobber we still buy Mitsubishis s down ear I personally am not a huge fan, and they seem to offer some pretty robust products from all reports compared to some other certain brands .

I went and drove the Mercedes and the Hilux also Triton and d max and the crapy ford lol the price was not a problem to me at all . and guess WHAT I GOT a GWM cannon X its way better then all of them bigger smarter drives like a car and the inside is great so I'm glad I got it ! there is a chip on the market for it to give it more power and it really works .
@@sleepyjoescumbag1663 Pretty baseless claim. He cancelled a Thai ute for a chinese ute..... whats the difference? GWM just bought the holden factory in Thailand so the next models will leave you with nothing to complain about. Dealers are selling base model rangers that are 10 years old for around $15K and the Crappy original Great walls are 8-10K so your comment makes no sense. given a ranger is about $15K more from new, add in the extra interest on repayments and less warranty then you start to realise your comment is pointless. Then if these do turn out to be a good ute and start taking market share then the other utes will need to lower their prices which again will lower the resale value of older utes.
Hello all... I bought one of these only 2 weeks ago....(Ipswich Qld) Driven it approx 500km thus far. I had a Ford Ranger XLT tech pack new from 2016 until 2020.....yes great vehicle (hard to fault) But this base model has more safety & tech in it then the Ranger did & rides better - with similar fuel economy. The Cannon has a small amount of turbo lag in normal mode but pop it into sports mode & it disappears..nothing a inexpensive idrive throttle controller wouldn’t fix. For under half the price of a equivalent (or even lower) specked 4x4 its worth a serious look & drive people. It’s surprised me enough to buy on after a test drive. Let’s face it more than half the high specked 4x4 never leave the bitumen.. More safety tech in this then I’ve ever seen & well worth a serious look at
Hot tips: All mainstream automotive leather is 'fake'. 'Standard Aussie pallet' means a Chep pallet (1165mm as referred to), and any other pallet, such as those smaller ones used for tiles will fit fine. No mention of ISOFIX points, of which there are "Children Seats ISOFIX Device + 2 Rear Anchor Points" according to the specifications. Towing capacity at 3000kg and towball download limit of 300kg, without knowing a stated GVM, is absurd. Towball download is part of GVM and therefore payload. Tradies are gonna put stuff in the tray and trailer. Don't tow 3t with this ute; no more than 2.5.
The pandemic has meant that car journalist have had to to get their industry perks elsewhere. No longer are they flown business class to car manufacturer's model launches - now desperately resorting to Chinese money for paid for advertisements.
First look on the street think it’s GM ute, as it’s big and the front looks great, I will buy it if I need one, why not? They all came with warranty etc, just drive it
My friend has a Ford ranger wildtrack, 2 years old with 20,000 klms and has just had his engine replaced. I'm sure he paid $70,000. The cannon to me is a much cheaper option.
