GY6 / 150CC CV Belt Removal, Clutch Replacement & Springs

A very good video demonstrating how to remove/replace a Chinese scooter's CV belt, clutch and clutch springs using ORDINARY hand tools. The Clutch on this scooter had a broken pulley, which is why it "appears" to be more difficult to remove the belt. On a fully functional clutch/pulley, this removal would be a fairly easy task. Keep in mind, this video shows how to remove the clutch pulley if you DO NOT have an impact wrench available, otherwise you would use one!
Thanks For Watching!

Man, just wanted to say how much I am enjoying your GY6 series. Ive just acquired a super low use, 1000 mile 6 year old 125CC scoot that has been standing in a container most of its life. It revs a whole bunch but wont go over 40 MPH. I suspected a problem someplace in the CVT and by watching your videos, I've gone from never seeing one of these engines to knowing all about them before I even break out the tools. You are a legend sir, thank you from merry England.

I have new TVS Jupiter and it is just 4.5 months old and just 2550kms total run. 2nd free service is done. Tyre pressure is ok. Engine oil and gear oil is just changed few days ago. Rear tyre is freely move. My problem is that the scooter is always start to vibrating around 45 to 50 km/h speed and if two persons are sitting on scooter then its vibration increases and start from 35 to 50km/h speed. After 52 km/h speed no more vibrations. Vibrations coming from handle, floor board and slightly from rear side when pillion also sit. Is it required to use sandpaper in clutch cover, clutch shoe, rear tyre assembly and rear brake shoes and also clean the clutch cover and greasing the rollers in clutch and variator? I see some videos on internet to use ragemaar/sandpaper in rear tyre's internal assembly area, brake shoes, clutch shoes and also clean the clutch area and greasing all rollers of clutch and variator but it is not mentioned in TVS manual book and also service centre guys had never done it. I told this vibrating problem to TVS service centre during free service but they just tight the all screws. What you think, what is the actual problem of vibration around 40 to 50 km/h speed. Is this a problem of clutch shoe, Variator, rollers or something else? What is the solution? Please help me.

And what springs(Yellow, Blue, Red) and why those were used. 1500RPM YELLOW Torque Spring combined with Blue 1000RPM clutch springs is what I like. BTW,.. there is no such part called the Variator Spring, it is called the Torque Spring.

Hey electronisNmore I have a peace sport 150 cc scooter a screw fell out that held In gear oil. I didn't notice till to late and one day it started making a lot of noise back end area and as I was trying to get it home it just stopped going. Small pieces of metal fall out now from the clutch assembly. My question is that didn't mess up my engine it and after I replace the whole clutch and gear stuff back there where do I add the gear oil at and what is the gear oil for?
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 5 лет назад
You place the scooter on the center kickstand then slowly add gear oil into the bolt opening near the top until it starts flowing out of the bolt hole.
@aaronwoolhiser8338
@aaronwoolhiser8338 9 лет назад
I tried taking off my belt like this video and the other CV belt removal by squeezing clutch assembly. I can't get the belt pushed down all the way and I am wondering if it is faulty? I am also noticing the rear tire doesn't spin freely when on the center kick stand and when I try to push the scooter when not running it is very difficult. Another sign the clutch is bad?
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 9 лет назад
Aaron Woolhiser When the scooter is on the center kickstand, the rear wheel should spin. If it does not, then the clutch or gears in the rear wheel are bad. Some new inexpensive belts are made slightly wider making them very difficult to install using the method shown in this video. After the belt is pushed all the way to the bottom of the clutch pulley, you may need to take a small piece of 3/4" thick wood and tap the belt further down into the pulley. Doing that will help get the belt around the variator.

I replace the engine and transmission on my scooter 2 years ago have not rode it much. The rod bearing worn in the old. Question about the crankshaft? I am planning on building another 150cc with a few mods and the stock crankshafts are pressed. Is there a way to get them so the rod bearings are not pressed?
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 10 лет назад
I don't think so. I know swapping out the crankshaft is no big deal, but I have never had to replace a rod bearing. I'm not sure of the exact procedure, or special tools required. You might have to take the crankshaft along with the new parts, over to a machine shop to have them swap things out. What they are able to do in minutes, would take you hours if you were able to do it. Thanks For Watching!

electronicsNmore - Thanks for the great tips! I was wondering (I'm a novice, so please excuse the stupid question) does jour 1500rpm springs give you a higher top speed? I'm busing rebuilding a Johnway 125cc.
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 9 лет назад
No. All the 1500 RPM springs do is determine when the clutch begins to engage to turn the rear wheel. If your looking for higher top end speed, replacing a worn belt can give you higher top end speed. As the belt wears, it gets narrower and does not ride as high in the pulley. You can also try using heavier rollers in your variator. You will also have better gas mileage, but you will have slightly less power up hills. Making sure your caburetor mixture screw is properly adjusted, can help also. Thanks For Watching! Be sure to share, and rate a thumbs up.

I have many people that email me private messages, so it is very hard to help everyone, but it does sound like either your belt is worn(and is slipping), or you need to replace your clutch assembly/springs. You can buy them on Ebay cheap. This info only applies if the engine is running perfectly. If your engine is cutting in/out, then you may have a carb problem or timing issue.

@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 10 лет назад
Loctite is a thread locking compound. I used the red high strength type when I re-assembled the variator nut or clutch assembly nut. If you have an impact wrench, then you do not need any loctite. You can hold the variator fan using a strap wrench, then tighten the nut down with a ratchet. The loctite ensures the nut will never loosen at high RPM. 4 years I have used it, accumulating thousands of miles, and never a failure. Thanks For Watching

Perhaps if you share your experience the first time you removed the nut of the clutch then that would help because that nut is flipping hard to get off. Trying to find the best alternative before I buy the tool removal for the clutch bolt. Or is it only tight when lock tight is applied? I don't think mine's been removed before since I only had the drive belt replaced. So I'm guessing the clutch has never has touched. I have a 2006 model so more than 10yrs old but it doesn't look rusted. Overall, I like the idea of using a bigger wrench and the clamps to hold it down. I'm going to try that way if I can get the bolt off first lol. So is the clutch the only reason to cause a jump aggressively offline or trying to take off? My scooter done almost 38,000kms and haven't changed the clutch yet.

Hello, I need help with my scooter Keeway Silverblade 125, i bought it two months ago, and i drove on it maybe 300km when something went wrong. When scooter was working properly it could get to 9000RPM, but now around 6000RPM it looses power and something starts squeeling from variator. I tried to replace rollers in variator, i replaced springs in clutch and "big" spring but all it did is that it doenst squeel so much. But the main problem is still there when i hit 6000RPM i can´t accelerate anymore and i have to release gas, and when it drops down a little the scooter is again behaving fine until i hit 6000RPM. Hello, I've seen your video for diagnosing sounds from the engine, and I believe my clutch has gone bad. I have about 12k miles on my 125cc scooter, and when riding it yesterday it starting banging really hard once around 35 mph. I noticed after inspecting my wheel turns without throttle, and I have been getting a decrease in performance lately. In addition, where is the best place to buy parts from in your opinion?

how tight does the variator bolt go back on?
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 9 лет назад
If you do not have an impact wrench to reinstall the nut, then you should gently clean the threads on the crankshaft and inside the nut with a wire brush , wipe the threads clean with rubbing alcohol on a cloth, then apply medium strength thread locking compound(Loctite) to the threads before tightening the nut back down. Doing this will prevent the nut from loosening under high RPM's. You can use an oil filter strap wrench to hold the variator when you tighten it. Make it tight, but do not get carried away.
@tilligetbig
@tilligetbig 9 лет назад
electronicsNmore I have an impact wrench but when removing I drew a line on the nut and washer (which both come off when removing) so now for re-install I don't know how tight to put it, so just hit it with a impact gun a little and that's it?
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 9 лет назад
Don't worry about it. Hold the variator with one hand tight as you can, and use the impact wrench to tighten it down. Not super critical, but make sure it is tight. If you are paranoid, use the Loctite medium strength blue thread locker.

When I start my scooter it seems it is in gear. I have to start it with it up on the kick stand. It will not idle. Is that the clutch?
@electronicsNmore

If you start the scooter, and it is ONLY idling(Normal RPM 1200 or so), and the rear wheel is spinning, you need a new clutch. Thanks For Watching! Don't forget to rate a thumbs up.

nice video, can you help me with my kymco super 8 scooter 125, my belt broke and i replaced it with new one already (genuine kymco belt). I started using the scooter and when im in full stop and twist the throttle slowly, it started to accelerate but with shaking/juddering and then it feels like someone kick my scooter at the rear, as it starts to run.fast, my scooter is normal. but when I stop.(e.g in stoplight) it starts all over again (shaking/juddering thing before it runs normal again at higher speed). my question is,,, do I need to replace the whole clutch thing, or is there only part of the Clutch that need to be replaced? do I need to disassemble the clutch assembly (like what you did on your vid) an clean it parts by parts? your suggestions will surely help me. thanks
@electronicsNmore

Sounds like a loose belt, or a faulty clutch pulley.

@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 8 лет назад
+Cecilia Hudon Hi Cecilia. The seal behind the variator(One of the crankshaft seals), may be worn and leaking. If there is only a small amount of oil, no biggie, but if there is a lot of oil, you will need to replace the crankshaft seal, which is a big job. You may also have a leaky seal behind the clutch pulley. You can also try adding a leak stop additive to your oil. The additive causes the rubber seals to swell up and make a better seal. Thanks For Watching! Be sure to rate thumbs up and share.

Having a problem getting my casing off took all the bolts off and for some reason it is being held on where the bar where the kick start is..... weird!!
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 8 лет назад
+Keith Mass Wiggle and pull! That is a common problem. Grease up the kick start shaft that slides into the sleeve bearing on the CV cover before putting the CV cover back on.
@keith23uk
@keith23uk 8 лет назад
+electronicsNmore Thanks. Got it off. Was not easy though the setup had to get the front cover off with the gears attached to the cover! Had to have the kick start arm attached and move and pull the cover off. Ok managed to free the bar from the cover, the one thats next to the kick start arm, took a lot of twisting and pulling but eventually came free. Going to test my potential fix tomorrow as light once again stopped me. Drive belt and clutch seemed good to me. Highly suspect the kick start gearing not being in correct position causing a problem.

@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 11 лет назад
No need to. You can do it if you want. LOL What you do not seem to understand is the reason why it seemed difficult to remove, was because the clutch was DAMAGED and would not open fully. Ordinarily it would come off much easier. You have to be crazy to remove the variator fan just to change the belt.

An impact wrench and cheap Ebay impact bits would have done basically everything here. Mine was $60 for a Kawasaki brand impact wrench and twenty bucks for the bits that would have done everything here (10mm-29mm, 39mm one for the clutch). Seriously people, don't buy the bike if you can't buy the tools.
