How to video on replacing a starter clutch on a 150cc Chinese scooter. Will it fix the problem, watch and find out. Parts: Starter Clutch: amzn.to/2I8YVjF Fly-wheel Puller: amzn.to/2yv2gKe Castle Socket: amzn.to/2MbGJbo
I mentioned a "cheat" on your Solenoid video & I have another for those who don't have a rattle gun ;) Any time you need to remove something attached to the Crankshaft which means the engine will turn when you want it to stay still for you to remove a nut or part then you can simply remove the Spark Plug, push a clean soft rag into the cylinder via the spark plug port, making sure to leave some rag poking out for retrieval,... Turn the engine so the piston moves up toward the head & toward top dead center & the engine will stop rotating because the piston will compress the rag to "jam" the engine. Now with the engine not being able to free spin, you can remove you nut or part (or clutch on a chainsaw, or blade on a mower) & you really don't need a lot of rag in the combustion chamber because the space is pretty tight as it is. I have done this countless times on small engines without damage compared to watching people snap off cooling fins on flywheels from using those to stop the engine turning.
This helps me a lot..my baby was cranking while im starting her and yes i dont have an idea that my baby has a starter clutch on it.all i know was her stator relay and magneto
Really nice video and very helpful thank's so much for making this video I know what I know about GY6 SCOOTERS from watching your detailed videos on how to do this or that your videos has helped me so much thanks bro I really appreciate you sharing with us your knowledge on how to repair and fix these wonderful gy6 scooters....🙂👍
Hello, First off, nice video. Easy to follow along, and you explain everything at a level anyone can comprehend. My question is this. You drained the engine oil before tear down . Did you also drain the gear oil? You never stated in the video wether you did, or not. Thank you.. 👍🏻
Hey Brian, thank you very much. The gear oil doesn't need to be drained. The stater clutch is only lubricated with the engine oil. No problem, anytime.
Just gained a new sub! 👍 quick question, will any of this affect the timing whatsoever? I had a small issue with a non gy6 scooter before, changed the stator and it set the timing off which I had to put it into a garage for and don't want the same thing to happen
Thanks for the sub, and welcome to the family. Now my game is GY6, but with that being said, this procedure doesn't effect the timing on this engine. What I would suggest is to make sure your cam is in line with your fly wheel. I show an example in this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--W2u9uiykWg.html
Great video. Quick question. I have the 177cc engine and Im about to do this same replacement. Do I need to get piston at top dead center before removing or just install everything exact position as it came off? Just wanna make sure before I start removing. Thanks.
Johan, your right on, it's because they are garbage. The setup for the kick start gear is stupid and unreliable. The gears come out of alignment with very little pressure, in a place where uncontrolled foot pressure is applied. It's 2020 out there and were using tech from the 30's. I know the old adage, "if it works, don't fix it" but it never worked, so....
I took my starter out and the gear spins both ways, is that normal? My bike doesn’t start at all. I awaiting new starter clutch as I already have the tools. Also what torque specs did you use for the screws putting them back together??? Thanks.
Not sure of the torque specs but I rarely use them. Been working on cars for a long time so I can normally tell how much force to use. Pretty sure the starter is only suppose to spin 1 way. I'm sure with a quick Google check you can find the torques specs for your bike, they are all different.
Good day. Thank you for this very informative clip, it helped me a lot with replacing the the starter clutch. But..... after I; have placed everything back, i found that the starter doesn't want to turn... After opening it all and going step by step to see where the problem could be I've noticed that when placing back the outer casing with the new gasket, the moment I tighten the bolts it seems like the starter is been held back .. like its to tight.. why? do I need a thicker gasket?
Ok, sorry just need some clarification, when you say the starter, do you mean the starter clutch gear or the actual electric starter on the other side of the bike, which turn's this gear?
Hey i have a 150cc gy6 and my starters spinning but sounds like my engine isn’t engaging. but the fan infront of the stator still spins. is the problem still the starter clutch?
Katchi' s Kid I really hope you're still around to answer this! my 50cc TaoTao which is a 2016 GY6 has never had a major issue until now it has over 6,000 miles on it. one day it just did not want to start.it just cranks but won't turn over I found out it did not have spark so I couldn't find my meters and did the simple cheapest things first like a spark plug CDI starter coil, and kill switch.it was a long time waiting for those parts and I finally did find the meters and tested the pickup coil wire and the Exciter coil wire hoping hoping hoping it was not the stator! I didn't have a flywheel puller haha but excited coil tested okay both bolts and ohms but the pickup coil failed the volts test. I pulled the part off and put the two bolts back in the hole so as not to lose them and waited for the part to come in the meantime the wind did blow my bike over so keep that in mind. the part arrived and I noticed one of the bolts missing! I looked everywhere never did find it but I did get a replacement bolt installed the part had a hard time keeping a gap on it because every time I tighten the bolts it would come out of gas so I thought maybe a couple of thin nuts would help which it didn't! haha but I did finally manage to get it tightened down by moving the black plastic casing that held those two wires coming out of the stator I didn't need those two bolts and one of them actually fell out of my hand and I think it went behind the flywheel!!!! because when I try to start it it would just crank only a couple of times and then stop did!!!I double-checked I should say triple check everything again this time finding that the flywheel would not turn by hand not even trying the kickstarter would it turn!which it did turn freely up until the installation of that pickup coil it was fine. like I said I don't have a stator puller or flywheel puller so I think at this point I am screwed I was able to get the fan cover off and I did recover the missing bolt but never the missing nut! so the question my friend Katchi is do you think that nut is stuck on the stator magnets causing the bike not to start? it sounded like it was almost a dead battery but the battery was fully charged.and could that nut being in there have caused any more damaged especially to the starter clutch gear or anything in there? I haven't seen any oil leaks at all so I believe the oil pump is still in good shape but I am worried about the gears and I know I'll have to pull that damn flywheel off now! any help would be greatly appreciated as it looks like you're the only one here that could answer my question thank you
I am always here....okay, I didn't stop reading after you swapped the spark plug, coil, and CDI, but I thought it was the stator right away. You absolutely MUST get a flywheel puller! That bolt system is garbage and seems to have set you back a little. You know as I do, no spark, can be only 4 things. The stator might also be the issue with your battery. Bolt didn't make inside where the starter clutch is, so damage done there. I think 50cc's have 6-pole stators so if 1 pole is damaged, 5 won't cut it.
@@kachiskid thank you so much for being here for me and answering quickly yes I thinking the worst that it might be the stator as well so when I did find the meters I tested the stator right away which involves the Exciter coil and the pickup coil coming out of their correct? the Exciter coil tested okay thank goodness I didn't have to pull the stator off but the pickup coil being on the outside of the stator that one only the ohms tested good but I no reading whatsoever on Volts are you sure the net that I lost that I think went behind the flywheel and is stuck on one of the stator magnets is not holding that up and allowing the flywheel to spin freely? because like I said the flywheel always spun pretty until my last start up attempt at this point all I can get is a click click click with the electric starter and you can see the flywheel just turned a tiny bit during that click click click
my plan was to go ahead and get a stator anyways I can get a stator kitwhich has the puller and a couple other items but once I'm in there I need to know if that nut could have caused any other damage and is that what's causing the flywheel not to turn anymore? I know the stator if it was bad wouldn't cause the flywheel not to turn freely?
oh and I forgot yes it's just a battery issue because it gets really really cold here and does not like to start in the winter time this is my fourth one every year I have to replace it
Yeah, I recorded the sound on the video right before this one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RujjyNothfU.html at the very start of the video.
I’ve replaced starter clutch and am finding the crankcase gaskets I’ve ordered online don’t quite fit. They are close except for a couple bolt holes. Scooter is a 2nd hand 2013 Kymco Super 8 150. Is there a modification that might have changed crankcase size slightly? I don’t want to order another incorrect gasket.
If you can't find the gasket for your particular bike, my recommendation would be to get some Yamabond. www.ebay.com/itm/172366134240 This is what Yamaha uses to seal there crankcases. They don't even use gaskets. I think Honda make one called Hondabond. They take a minute to cure but are worth it in the end.
Hey brilliant video and very helpful. Big question; where did you get the castle nut remover? I'm in Houston and I've been to Home Depot, Lowes, Auto Zone, O'Reilley's, etc.... I can't even find one online. If anyone has an idea on how to get the castle nut off without such a tool, please let me know!
@@jay_tarantula899 Yeah seems like the link still works for me. I don't really mind if people ask me to assist, because sometimes the links can be sold out and such.
Bike won't start, you will hear a whizzing noise. Starter clutch starts the bike with the electric start, instead of kick starting. Start button sends volts to the starter...the starter turn the starter clutch...the bike starts.
And hey bro I have a 50 cc TaoTao scooter and I'm making it a hundred cc will this work for mine.? I'm trying to look online for a freaking starter clutch for my 50cc high performance and I don't see any only yours only the 150 or up it's like they don't come with it with my model . Idk. 🙄🤷♀️
@@kachiskid and oh all right and sorry for the late reply bro. :-( but this isn't high performance part this is the same as the stock one right that it comes with. And yeah I figured bro cuz I couldn't find the exact same one as the 150 so I guess I figured it's different
please tell me when should I replace the Starter Clutch? ... I have gy6 scooter that the starter spining but not engage to run the engine : please tell me what part shouold I check ?
Check this video out... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RujjyNothfU.html If your bike sounds like mine in the start of the video, you need to replace the starter clutch. Now you mentioned the starter (not starter clutch) is spinning and not engaging the engine, I would imagine that the starter needs to be replaced. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2vuhR922CMU.html
I have the same problem in my gy6 150cc Chinese scooter when I start it just makes a spinning noise coming from the starter clutch area. I think mine have to be replaced I bought the parts for it already.
Thanks to your videos I'm learning how to change my own parts. If this is my issue with starter clutch could someone please help me by letting me know if this sounds about right.
Also , I'm not sure if that short amount of time ruined my gasket but in case it did, would it be okay to use high temp liquid gasket because I have a tube of that sitting around and I can't really afford to wait for a new gasket to show up because I use my scooter for work. I'm in the hospital right now for probably 4 or 5 days but as soon as I walk out of here I'm going back to work on that scooter. Thanks for any help you can give.
I didn't give it time to cure and too much, I think. It was a horror show when I replaced it. The new gasket will be in tact when you take the cover off gently.
Do i need Loctite on the castle nut? I just installed a replacement heavy duty starter clutch and about 20 miles of city riding(so maybe 20-30 starts), its back to just the spinning sound when i try to start. Im praying to god its just because i didnt use Loctite and the castle nut just came loose. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 🙏. And great video.
Thank you. To tell you the truth I didn't use loctite, and I'm not sure you should. Of course that castle nut should not come off as long as it is torqued correctly. I am on my 3rd starting clutch though, but went with a Taida on the last one.
@@kachiskidThanks i think ill try a couple drops of blue and hittin it real hard with the torque wrench. I might have been a little too careful about over tightening. If that's not the case then I don't know what he fk is goin on 😡 😔
Lol yeah it turns out that the castle nut just came loose. So I cleaned the shit out of everything, especially the threads and added a little Loctite and Bam. New starter clutch works just fine.
If the variator belt and clutch spin but the rear tire doesn't. And the engine wont start is the starter clutch to blame? I hope can answer this question thanks
Angel, is the engine turning over? Attempting to start? If the engine is revving but won't turn over, check for spark. Look at the video, right before this one. In the beginning I hit the starter and it make a weird sound, that is how you know the starter clutch is bad.
@@kachiskid Hello. No it doesn't try to start. Only a freely spinning variator with the belt and the clutch. No rear tire movement. If I turn the the clutch bell by hand the wheel turns.
Hey Roland, I rode on my until complete failure. The only problem I can foresee happening it won't start to bring you home after you stop somewhere. That being said if you are going for just a ride you should be fine. I couldn't use my kick starter because it was garbage from the start.
Kachi's Kid thanks so much for the quick reply! I ordered both tools but am waiting on the actual starter clutch. Just didn’t want to explode while driving or anything.
Kachi's Kid sorry one last question, so am I to understand the starter clutch is only used when utilizing the electric start? Furthermore, could one remove the starter clutch and still utilize the kick start thus avoiding the terrible rattling noise?
@@Roland-Henry that is a good question, I'm not really sure but my guess is no. The starter clutch needs to start the bike no matter what. I think you kick starter just bypasses the battery, but again I'm not sure.
having the same problem that noisy sound is that normal for a gy6 150cc can i send a video clip to your email so you can verify if its bendix that is noisy
The flywheel puller tool is too big on one side for my flywheel, my threads are also righty tighty, is that the wrong tool for my scooter? It tightens fully but the flywheel still turns freely
Kachi's Kid it has peace sports on the side, I think it’s a talon 50, and the bike doesn’t start, I put a brand new battery and it keeps cranking but doesn’t turn, I ended up getting the fly wheel off and it looks nothing like this one, there’s a plastic gear instead of the starter clutch so Idk what to do
@@paulatarling1447 Yeah, from across the pond. The reason I ask is, we don't really have 125cc's over here in the states. 50's and 150cc's, which are gy6 engines from Chinese bikes. Your engine is different, and I wouldn't know where to get parts besides ebay. Our 125cc's are normally motorcycles.
This is the quantum guy & still logging in damages 🤔 & see if you find this strange ) they want to completely come pickup the damaged scoot & only then start the process of sending out a replacement IDK why? they can't have my New scooter on the same truck seem's fishy to me .what your thoughts??
I think that is the process..for example, if you hadn't accepted it from UPS, they would have had to gotten it back before they shipped out a new one. Like you said they don't want American Express on their butts.
🌟💯@@kachiskid thanks brother for all the discussions & helping me feel at ease & hadn't forgotten about the pics . Before I start blasting them , You think I should let them pickup & try to make it right, such a shame of a,beautiful scoot ( botched delivery with no front axle & or spacer exhaust is caved in scrap & scratched every . @@just4kicks950 Yes, anyone can make a mistake once, give them a chance to get it right. At least they know your not playin' around. Hey fam how you doin? Today I charged my Alice and now it won’t start. Been having problems since the cdi instal, can you help me fam? It’s making an eeewaaahhh noise lol, when I try to start.
Kachi's Kid the sound vanished when I tried to kick start it even tho kickstart don’t work but before when I put my head inside it came from the solenoid
Kachi's Kid your other video I just saw, imma try checking it out with the meter, thanks fam your really helpful, your videos are always my go too. And yeah I’ll send you video I’ll check if the noise comes back but rn only light works and my usb to sae adapter. Man I just got my new belt and mirrors and rollers. Do i need a new spark plug to go with my racing cdi? Might as well replace my box filter dang I think I worked more times on it then riding. It’s still relaxing tho keeps me busy. Thanks again brothah
It's not supossed to spin clockwise it only spins freely counterclock, if you move it clockwise you should be moving your piston up and down and if it doesn't move it means your crankshaft is damaged at the piston rod which causes the piston rod to bind every now and then and if you don't change your crank shaft eventually you will find metal shavings in your oil from the rod bearing movement side to side.
Agreed. At the time I didn't know what I was doing. It was good to just get the cover off. Taida starter clutch in a Taiwanese 180cc, is what is on there now.
