I'm reading through all the comments and their replies. It's kind of upsetting how some people don't realize that the gymnasts actually did well for their first time doing parkour, and vice versa, the men did well in gymnastics. The moves they performed were not perfect, which is obvious enough. The gymnasts were stiff doing parkour because that's how they were trained. To stick the landing. The parkour instructors were loose in their landings because, you guessed it, they were instructed to be ready to move. It is hard to break habit.
@aleksandra2549
@aleksandra2549 3 года назад

They were amazing. I do dance so sometimes people ask me to show them something and to be honest: most people have no idea what their body is actually doing. All of them did great
@brooke1639
@brooke1639 3 года назад
Also women tend to have longer legs and shorter torsos, proportion wise, so when they were jumping over the box and being asked to tuck their legs through their arms that would be a lot more difficult than for a man. Men tend to have shorter legs and longer torsos. So a lot of moves are based on body dynamics of the sexes.

The girls’ flip was pretty different. The guys always float when they jump, land, or roll. Gymnast go for hard, fast, powerful moves
@Real_MisterSir
@Real_MisterSir 4 года назад
yea it's unfortunate that this was constantly glanced over, as it is the most important element of parkour and none of them seemed to ever get it right. Always stiff landings that resulted in complete loss of all motion, and parkour without fluency of motion is just climbing. They could do a part two that only focuses on transitions between moves, in order to preserve momentum, because they all clearly struggled with it.
@xchemicalXladybugx
@xchemicalXladybugx 4 года назад
Daniel Kemnitz I think they’ll figure it out if they do some actual parkour for a short time. You can’t have those powerful landings without mats. It’ll destroy your ankles and knees. And if you don’t land, well you just wrecked your whole body. Also, you don’t do quick passes. Parkour is about persistence and stamina. They wear themselves out very quickly with these powerful movements. If they had to do a parkour race, they’d be exhausted in no time
@SDoesNotKnow
@SDoesNotKnow 4 года назад
@@Real_MisterSir That's because in gymnastics, it's all about the stick landing. A very different basic skill they learned early on so for them, landing that way is second nature. They don't have the luxury of rolling or moving freely after a landing since it would cost them tons of points and may lose medals/titles. I think if they've taken more lessons, the coaches would have done more to emphasize that as they would be moving onto real-world settings.
@SDoesNotKnow
@SDoesNotKnow 4 года назад
@@xchemicalXladybugx I think you bring up a good point about persistence and stamina. Gymnastics takes tons of stamina and power, but it's not the most cardio sport compared to say running, dancing, or figure skating. It seems like parkour with its emphasis on movement and motion would rely on conserving energy to last the distance. Gymnastics is a totally different sport in that respect.

@ulyssesthedm
@ulyssesthedm 3 года назад
I was instructed by a woman in my gymnastics class when I was younger! UwU Trust me, this is the normal thing because in a gym ladies are more skilled than the men in certain areas, and vice versa. For example, guys are great at things requiring upper body strength (ie rings, pommel horse), and women are great at things requiring lower body strength (ie tumbling, balance beam). So a teacher or instructor should be good at what they are instructing. ☺️👍 Also women tend to have a higher center of gravity, so that does help a little bit with tumbling.

@Real_MisterSir
@Real_MisterSir 4 года назад
@@Edd-zd5wb I mean, they all failed in doing parkour here as well. They just thought they did it. But parkour takes a lot of effort just to get into the basics. They didn't do a single exercise properly, they did it the "gymnast" way, but that is vastly different to the "parkour" way. The main difference is that the parkour style allows you to chain moves into succession and maintain momentum, while the gymnast way gives you the appearance of full control, but with absolutely no momentum transfer. So basically they just did gymnastics but with parkour exercises. They never did actual parkour. - and indeed, if they took it outdoors to the real world, the differences would make themselves much more obvious to them. Indoors it's easy to get lulled into believing you're doing it well, when in fact you are completing the task but also at the same time you're doing it wrong.

I think one of the biggest differences I noticed between the traceurs and the gymnasts was how they landed everything. In Gymnastics, landings are a major component that have just as much importance as the routine and need to be hit with strength and intensity. Parkour landings, while they do need to be solid for precision landings, are more about being light on your feet so you can have options over where to go next. It's much more fluid and opportunistic rather than the final impact. I really liked this video.

It really was great to see. Everyone had fun while at the same time taking it seriously (trying to do it correctly, even for example when the guys were trying the more flamboyant gymnastics flourishes), so much mutual respect and humility, not only between gymnasts and parkour(... ists?) but within the groups (gymnasts were encouraging each other, parkour guys were encouraging each other in the other vid). And the admiration for each other's disciplines. This vid and it's partner vid were both fun, interesting, and showed the best of human nature and physical ability. Glad it was recommended 😎

Gymnasts in particular have a very strong discipline. You don't get very far in that sport by slacking off and not being very committed. They're sports instructors. They have to be on the lookout for anything that may happen. That floor is concrete, and should you fall and hit your head, it will hurt bad. They've instructed people for a long time now, and them worrying about stuff is something like a second nature. Besides, during the precision landings, two of the gymnasts looked like they didn't have a steady balance and were about to fall. It's completely reasonable to worry about stuff.

@prefix253
@prefix253 4 года назад
@@catsi563 I agree, however, most parkour is very choreographed as well. It's extremely rare for a traceur to legitimately train with no prior knowledge to the terrain ahead and all the obstacles within it. Most of us look around the area, check the dangers of the place (unstable walls, loose bricks, shaky hand rails, etc), then we come up with a line (a line or a run, is a short sequence of obstacle transversing that's been premeditated and planned out, kind of like an obstacle course). After the line has been thought of, we do each step of the line individually (if it's difficult or scary anyways, if it's easy then we'll go right away). Once feeling comfortable with every step of the run, we commit. We may fail sometimes, but we don't stop until we complete the run perfectly, usually anyways.
@catsi563
@catsi563 4 года назад
@@prefix253 I disagree slightly. theres a difference between a choreographed routine like gymnastics and Parkour where sure I grant you they might study the terrain but when the time comes to actually run they tend to wing it on the fly. Still I do agree that most traceurs get to know the terrain really well ahead of time.
@junoliljekvist4120
@junoliljekvist4120 4 года назад
@@prefix253 This, very much! The reason why there's less traceurs getting hurt in parkour than football players in football is because we prepare our runs by trying out separate sections at a time and we also know and test our own and the surface's boundaries before doing the entire run.
@prefix253
@prefix253 4 года назад
@@catsi563 No, I'm telling you, as a traceur myself, we hardly ever wing it on the fly. Everyone in my community comes up with a line, and everyone even on RU-vid does the same thing. Check out the big parkour channels on RU-vid, such as Storror, Team Farang, Tempest Freerunning, Motus Projects, Sqvadron, Mareo Gang, etc. They all do the same thing that I've said. Sure there's some cases where we "go with the flow', but the majority of the time, we flow through a run we've already thought of and practiced numerous times.

Gymnastics are more rigid and controlled to make precise movements, while parkours are a little bit looser and more resilient to make precise landings. I think both sports are amazing. And I loved the fact that they choose different groups and genders and how both have the same capabilities and difficulties when experiencing different zones of knowledge and skills. Love how they perform the same movements but by different means, and how their brains make an automatic correction of their moves even when they want to do it differently. Amazing.

Not equitable. Parkour is about adapting to variables and gymnastics is about rigid control. Of course the Parkour guys are not going to follow classic form easily, they weren't trained that way. I had the same thought about really top notch gymnasts-they will automatically point their toes and stick as rigid a landing as possible because after doing it that way so long with such high stakes it's muscle memory. They would struggle hard with Parkour. All kudos to these ladies, though, they did well.

Inquisitve m I mean both views are true but I think people that do parkour project a stronger image to people because they do it in an uncontrolled and sometime extreme environment which make people think that it requires greater strength Meanwhile gymnast are mostly known for swinging on a bar, jumping on a beam and dancing. It’s not really a matter of what’s harder (both are hard in different ways) but what projects an image of strength. Graceful rarely translate to strong to the masses, while extreme sports do

BS, anyone who has done high school PT has a bit of experience with it and what strength it takes, ESPECIALLY if you can make it look graceful. No one who has watched Olympic gymnastics has missed the muscle development on female gymnasts. And these guys never disparaged the gymnasts, they were very encouraging and appreciative of the progress they made.
@peoplediewhenising
@peoplediewhenising 4 года назад
Barbara Danley to be clear, I said being graceful does not translate to the masses as hard or strong, NOT that being graceful is an easy thing. I’m pretty sure that for all sports, if you’re not a fan, the masses will only look at things superficially. Doesn’t matter if you tried it at PE, the first image it projects is that gymnastics is an indoor sport, and majority of the people in it are women.

Also i think there's diffegrence you can see when they did frontflips and flips in general, cuz people who do parkour have lighter landing cuz they're used to land on concrete and walls etc. but gymnasts do it more powerfull and it could hurt when landing on hard surface (i think)
