I’m wondering if a coach and owner of gymnastics club , your club Carlton and you , who refused a 15 year old girl to use the toilet who was on her period because you thought she was trying to get out of conditioning ( when she was probably your fittest gymnast ) who then went on to have a burst ovarian cyst . Has your club culture changed ? Has your ego lessened ? 🧐

Hi Lynn, hope your well. Firstly, I am truly sorry to hear of any pain regarding your daughter. Secondly, If you are talking about the night that you bought your daughter to train during a squad session she was not part of 10 years ago then let's be totally transparent. Squad sessions are for competing gymnasts only. During every session and just before the conditioning we give all the gymnasts in the squad the chance to drink and use the toilet because the 5 mins of cardio conditioning needed to be done consecutively, if any improvement was to be gained. Every squad session we did the same thing before sally up sally down etc. We have never refused any gymnast a toilet break. It was only during this 5 mins every session. Any squad gymnast or parent can confirm. You asked if your daughter could join the session. Due to her foot injury from her previous club, plus putting her welfare 1st was the reason she was not in the competing squad. Her ability was never in question. As a proud parent you wanted her to compete rightfully so, however, we had to put her welfare 1st. These decisions are not made lightly, knowing the upset it causes to the gymnast and their parents. With that in mind, I reluctantly allowed her to participate in that night's session as you know. Which was my mistake as I should of put the team dynamics 1st. Which was my inexperience showing at that time. If memory serves correct, 1min into the conditioning she asked for a toilet break. I said no as you need to do the cardio if your going to stand any chance to compete. You then shouted at me aggressively to let her go as she is on her cycle. Embarrassed by that revelation being shouted across the room, (really wish you had of told me before she started the conditioning) I then obviously allowed her to go to the toilet. Are you suggesting, in between the time of me saying no, and you shouting at me is when the cyst burst? As this is news to me. My decision was not ego driven. It was welfare driven as she had so many injuries. Was it right to refuse her the toilet break? No. Truly sorry for that. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and I'm not perfect by any means.
