Gymnosperms: Long-Distance Pollination

We've made through a number of vascular plants so far, but it's time to examine gymnosperms. These include plants like pine trees, and any plant that bears cones. These plants exhibit an important evolutionary advantage over previous plants, they can undergo fertilization by wind instead of water. This means that gymnosperms don't have to live right next to a river or some other body of water. For this reason, once gymnosperms evolved, the earth became covered in forests for the first time. Let's get a closer look at these majestic plant species!

I don't know if you check the comments of old videos, but I just wanna say thank you so much! These videos are really helpful and I love watching your content just for fun and to learn. I am not lying when I say you are the reason I passed my biology test(I love biology and learning about life, but my teacher just reads from the textbook expecting us to "get it")

While cycads are gymnosperms they have a lot in common behaviourally with angiosperms- they're not pollinated by the wind, and their seeds are large, heavy, and have a edible coat. Unfortunately because they're only a minor component of modern ecosystems and not terribly diverse these days they tend to get ignored.

Sad fact: First discovered in Africa by a British explorer, a male cyad exported to London. These species we're the dominant tree species during roughly the Age of Dinosaurs, but environmental and evolutionary changes in plant species drove thier population to near extinction. Before the discovery, scientists thought these species are extinct. This plant in London is last bachelor in thier species.

For all of those confused. The Jurassic period is not when Gingkoes evolved as that was from 201 to 145 MYA. Gingko trees came into existence during the Permian period, so he is way off, unfortunately. Some also say it was 290 MYA, not 270 MYA so the early Permian at that.
