I never knew Tyne Daly was such a great stage actress with a a voice to match Mama Rose's raw, unbridled ambition!

One thing I really like about Tyne's performance of the song is how she ends it. When she says "For me and for you," she isn't even looking a Louise, she's looking into the audience. It shows us that this is WAY more for her than it is for Louise. Tyne's Rose is the coldest and most self-centered, which isn't my favorite interpretation of the character (Ms. Peters holds that spot) but I love what it brings to this song in particular.

So wonderful to see this! Tyne Daly is by far my favorite of the major Roses. She was just the right amount of funny, pathetic, and terrifying. I'd love to see more from this recording.

"She was just the right amount of funny, pathetic, and terrifying." A perfect description, thank you. More than one of the major subsequent Roses were total drama queens from the word go. Tyne is also my favorite of the major post-Merman Roses.

I recently stumbled upon an interview with Bruce Vilanch, in which he explained that he was writing for Dolly Parton’s failing TV variety show Dolly! and they were having a very hard time getting guest stars. They approached Tyne Daly and she said she would do it if she could sing. They gave her a scene in which she played a trucker in a dinner who sings a song. A producer friend of Bruce’s was watching the episode with him and after seeing her sing called Arthur Laurents and asked him what he would think of her in Gypsy. Thank good for Dolly’s failed show or we may never have seen the absolute genius of her Rose....thanks as always for posting Spiderwoman!

The producer was Barry Brown who also produced the Lansbury revival and the original La Cages. Tyne Daly was my favorite actress as a kid and I remember being home from college when the Dolly show aired and making sure I tuned in to see Tyne. I was in Miami when they opened this Gypsy at the Jackie Gleason. My acting teacher was friends with Barry Brown. At the opening night curtain of Act 1 following this number, there was a shout from the orchestra, "Is there a doctor in the house?" followed immediately by the same shout from the balcony. TWO people had had heart attacks. We noted the headline in Miami Herald might read the next day "Tyne Daly knocks 'em dead." Thankfully, they didn't die to my knowledge.

the only rose I have seen that actually pointed at Louise at the end …..it was frightening...she didn't use the ending to throw her arms up like look I sang the showstopper love me...she was ROSE pointing at her daughter...for me and for YOU.....a great choice that I have never forgotten..Patti was patti….Tyne was Rose

People never mention angela as rose she was just as good where she had the warmth of a mother but also the desperation and how sad and pathetic she is at the end it’s very heartbreaking and scary in her roses turn she has this insane amount of joy that turns to desperation and despair

Another great video, thanks! Tyne Daly sounds great here, much better than on the cast recording, which she recorded when she was sick. I never knew she had this much strength in her voice, I wish they'd recorded the cast recording another time.

Listen, Tyne’s ferocity and skill in the role is immaculate, as always. But when Linda Lavin took over, the reviews were brutal. In my opinion this was a terrific production, with two INCREDIBLE leading ladies. I love this maddening sense to Lavin’s portrayal, yet I also love the switching in demeanour and letting the true colours seep through in Daly’s interpretation. I also wish Linda Lavin could’ve recorded something like the cast recording, also Daly was sick then too, so this was definitely A TREAT, to say the least. Bravo! 👏

Linda Lavin was OK, but she adopted this horribly unnecessary, fake Irish brogue, and it just threw me right out of the moment.

Thank you for posting this, aurora spiderwoman! I saw this revival in Los Angeles pre-Broadway, and Tyne Daly is still my favorite out of the Roses I've seen. For me, she was somehow the most human (and charming!), and also the most terrifying in her narcissistic, controlling delusion. None of the others I've seen have quite worked as well for me.

I saw this twice. I will NEVER forget, you made it through all of Act One with her, and she was good. But then when Everything's Coming Up Roses would start, you'd watch the whole audience clench, waiting for disaster. You could literally sense the "Uh-oh" moment. And then she would proceed to just BLOW you away. The way she acted her way through this number pummeled you. When the intermission lights came up, you could see the astonishment. That Patti LuPone allegedly original slow-burn freakout during this song in her revival of Gypsy? Tyne Daly did it FIRST. Remember that.

She is a great actress, but this is one of the greatest musicals. She isn't a singer. She has no power, no vibrato. He singing voice is community theater level. No one cared in 1989 and no one cared here. I was in the minority. I prefer powerhouse musicals to have powerhouse voices to go along with them. Beanie Feldstein attempted "Funny Girl" with no voice. Look what happened. But Tyne got a pass on having no voice.
