This is a great song " Rose's Turn" sung by the SUPERB Miss Tyne Daly, this performance is so OUTSTANDING, Just love the way Miss Tyne Daly sings this AMAZING song full of depth, power, but, also with pathos when Mama Rose has to let go. FABULOUS.
A great example of how a non-singer can perform the role with such commitment one is completely drawn in spite of quite frankly overly busy direction and unnecessary movement. Still a brilliant take. Tyne owns the stage for sure.
I wouldn’t exactly call her a non-singer. She grew up doing musical theatre. She’s just not as flashy as some. Listen to the recording of her doing Call Me Madam. She is definitely a singer.
Another poster noted that this Roses Turn "makes sense". What a great way to put it. Tyne is an actress who sings. Merman was a singer who acted (or talked loud). There's a huge difference. This role def needs an actor who sings.
Angela acted and singed this role the way Sondheim and Julie styne imagined they even said she was better than merman. Her rose was rather unhinged and bitter
I've watched videos of several of Broadway's great divas doing their turn as Rose in Gypsy, an d in 'Rose's Turn" I have to say that Tyne Daly gave one of the best performances of them all. There was that certain something that made me feel she was Rose, very hard-edged, driven, a stage mother who pushed her daughters into show business to compensate for the career she never had.
If memory serves, she had a cold or something when she recorded the cast album and you could tell. This sounds much, much better, and her performance really comes through. Excellent.
Only thing is Eder isn't enough of an actress. If she were, she'd have tackled other roles. She's only interested in singing alone, it seems. By the way I love Linda. Just not her bag.
I saw it on Broadway and Her Rose's Turn was the first time I saw it really acted out and where it made sense. She didnt just sing, her emotional transitions preceded the singing. It was the first time I believed Mama Rose was breaking down during the "mama...mama..."
Look up Rose Hovick on Google. The real life Rose was a lesbian. There was no Herbie. And Tyne Daly's hair and makeup resemble photos of the real Rose as well.
Tyne is a billion times better than her "temporary replacement" Linda Lavin. She acts the hell out this. You understand how damaged and human Mama Rose is.
Wow, I saw this years ago at the majestic in Dallas, Tx…I have to say, I never got how sad this song is till I heard her fall apart on stage, to date this my favorite performance!
Very strong. The acting is spot on. Patti Lupone over did it. Berndatte's voice was not perfect but the acting was good. This is probably the best somewhere in the middle.
@@oldbonesNJyeah she does a bit much for me to be honest I get rose is over the top but patti in every role always sings like she’s making a point to prove only she can play the role which is why she is a diva.
@@richardmayora1289 Yes and yes. Saw her "live" - an unforgettable evening. And what made it doubly so was that although it was a "star" performance, she was totally integrated into the ensemble, making it the most satisfying production I've ever seen of the show. And that includes the ones starring Lansbury (in London) and LuPone (Broadway), both terrific.
