He uses playing cards as a metaphore to tell about the slave times. In card playing you have "checks" (as in Poker) you have deck of card and you can pull a card. Yet to pull someone's card means to exposed his lies. MOREover, if you were a slaves you had to be under the deck of the ship when you had to row etc. On top deck were the slave owners.
