Made some test maps for my forked branch of GZDoom: github.com/dileepvr/gzdoom_is... All assets and music are from the old Crusader games (No Remorse and No Regret). Test maps (wads) available at www.mediafire.com/file/fv8ryt...
I've specifically looked for that type of mod and now it seems possible. I actually wanted like a doom that played like fallout tactics and couldn't believe that no one had done it.
I feel like I think “How could this work if it were Voxel Doom” for every single mod, but in this case I feel like it’s quite pertinent as an excellent use case. As we see here, though GZDoom’s geometry can be dynamically translated to multiple orthographic perspectives with effective results, 2D sprites have to be individually designed to accommodate a particular perspective to achieve the same effect, hence the use of sprites from the Crusader series. With voxel models however, they have the geometry necessary to be translated across multiple perspectives while still maintaining stylistic parity with their 2D source material, making them an ideal compromise for this fascinating scenario.
voxel old school x-com with more specific precise terrain destruction (i.e. small bullet holes in a wall instead of the entire wall collapsing after being shot 4 or 5 times.) would be awesome.
I wonder, if you can do voxel models using AI. There is already a multiple isometric shots of one object, so this definitely doable with modern AI tech.
Bonus points for using the original crusader soundtrack. I've only briefly played the demo in the 90s, but totally love the soundtrack - usually use it as background music when working on PCBs.
the full games were so awesome that they were worth figuring out the horrendous controls... just horrendous, other than the awesomeness of the brutally violent deaths you inflict throughout, the only thing i member is the controls being a nightmare to fight against
Everyone asked "Can it run doom?" but now with this we enter a new era... the era of "Can doom run it?". Imagine what games you could put into this? Maniac mansion, fallout, baldurs gate... The list is endless! Fantastic work!
Crusader No Remorse was the first PC game I ever bought and I loved it. This video brought me fond memories back and I hope your project can bring the fun of Crusader to a new generation.
Now I want to see a game made like Shadowrun for SNES in this engine. I always liked the style of how that game played but nothing has ever captured that vibe 100% since.
@@zetamaniac Ain't nothing but a poor doom emulator now. Hasn't stopped me from having a blast with it tho, been playing a bunch of total conversions in both the original maps and crazy ones some random joe made in his room by himself, it looks like i will never finish even half of all those new maps and mods before i die.
Thank you kindly. I tried Rachael's suggestion here watch?v=iItgK_ePak4 . I think it works for level geometry. But the sprites merely change size instead of distorting towards vanishing points. It shows in the larger sprites that are meant to align with each other. It might be fixable with redrawn (or pre-distorted) sprites. A script might be able to apply the right distortion.
Man, a Fallout remake with this engine and using voxel sprites would be awesome. Specially if it was able to support user created campaigns. I'd gladly pay for this.
Badass! This is inspiring. Please keep pushing the limits. Adventure and RP games immediately come to mind. I also picture retro experimental RTSs like Dungeon Keeper or Populous.
Thats insane, you are some kind of super genius. I have thought about making games from 2 of these POVs but put it off because I like the GZDOOM engine and dont want to relearn everything from scratch in another engine
This is incredible! I played Crusader as a kid, and only completed the entire game last year or so. It had great graphics, and the gameplay was good, but the control was super clunky and stiff. To see it here super smooth, while still retaining the exact look is absolutely amazing!
This is awesome, the possibilities seem endless for what you can do on CZDoom! I also loved playing Crusader: No Remorse growing up! I "regret" not getting the other one too, lol.
You mention "Diablo" and "RPG", but my mind went immediately to "Jagged Alliance 2", arguably one of the best cRPGs of all time. It's not a coincidence that it's isometric, and when I play NWN, it's almost always an "isometric-like" POV I take.
So amazing!! Wow! Just wow! And seeing “new” Crusader gameplay in 2023 is just awesome! The potential for this is indeed so big. It basically turns ZDoom into a “game maker” engine.
Wow, with this you could re-imagine fallout 1 and 2, or arcana. It would be cool seeing those games but with realtime action instead of turn based. Strife Quest for the Sigil RPG when?
