The third H3 Launch Vehicle (H3 F3) launched the Advanced Land Observing Satellite-4 (ALOS-4) “Daichi-4” from the Tanegashima Space Center, on 1 July 2024, at 03:06:42 UTC (12:06:42 JST). According to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), ALOS-4 will “observe the Earth's surface using its onboard phased array type L-band synthetic aperture radar (PALSAR-3)”.

Great Launch!

ALOS - 2 passes over my town regularly - I'm a satellite spotter and, with ALOS-2 being big enough and reflective enough to be usually visible for its whole track across our sky, it's become kind of an old friend.

The wonderful screeching sound as good as ever, I still wonder to this day what causes it.

It's the exhaust from the expander turbine that drives the fuel/oxy pumps. Because there is an open pipe straight from the turbine to the atmosphere, you can hear the turbine bearings screeching as it hits max rpm

@@dsdy1205 Thank you. A few years ago I remember going into a >1 hour long rabbit hole of trying to find what the reason for that sound was. I saw everywhere from people saying it was due to the shape of the rocket to the geometry of the nozzle or the turbopumps.

@@CarlosAM1 You're welcome! It's certainly possible that some of those other factors contribute as well, but largely the reason that stands out to me is the reason that the H3 rocket as a whole stands out as well - the use of a expander-bleed-cycle engine, something that does not really exist in any other orbit-worthy rocket in the world so far.

@@dsdy1205 That does leave up a question tho, why do the HIIA and HIIB still make that screeching sound, despite having a closed cycle engine as the first stage...?

@@CarlosAM1 I mean, it doesn't really, from what I can hear. Do you have a link I can listen to?

Felicidades JAXA

@@AwardQueue Cost per launch is about 50 million and JAXA is targeting 30 million down the line, quite cheap compared to ariane 6

@@_K3PLR Especially with the cheaper yen. Since the yen is around ¥161=1$ today, the cost per launch will be around 31M$. which is pretty cheap for a launch.
