*Note: AGC still kicks in when recorded to the camera, so it's not the best audio quality, but still worth having backup, right? and easier way to sync with plugin.
The reason I do this is because I want to sync my audio and video easier while editing by having non-muffled hard-to-see audio level. I use Adobe Premiere Pro, so can't Plural Eyes like Final Cut users. (UPDATED* now Plural Eyes is available for Premiere as well, hoorah~!)
AGC on DSLRs are stills pain in the butt, but better than nothing, right?

Gail, I used the H4N last weekend for the audio portion of a concert I shot, that Attenuation attachment was awesome only because the audio was starting to peak and the sound guy was way to busy for me to bother. The Attenuation attachment saved me big time! I am looking to get the H6... can't wait.
@InTheZoneProduction1
@InTheZoneProduction1 10 лет назад
Also, why not press record on the H4? You can have a back up handy in case something happens to your audio from the DSLR. You actually might have a better sound coming from the H4... sure you have to sync it up in post, but worth it. Just give a quick "Clap" to simulate a Slate. Oops... I just remembered your video title as using the H4 as a monitor.

@ams914 always have to sync up in post. Zoom is a totally separate device only for audio. When you push record button once, it goes into "standby" mode where you can actually hear the sound. It doesn't record to SD card on H4N, but if you record the camera, the audio will be captured. I hope that make sense.

I need some help with the camera and digital recorder settings. I have connected my Tascam tascam dr-05 output to my Nikon D5300 mic input, the problem is that when I start recording with the Tascam dr 05 ouput volume un 30 or more and the DR5300 mic sensibility in 5 or more sound easily get distorted (saturation shows in the yellow end even red lines if character speaks a little lowder), but if I decrease the recorder volume or the camera mic sensibility the final video sound is too low. What setting should I use? Am I missing something else I should configure?

I've used exactly this set-up. Just beware that the headphones can actually act as a microphone and pickup noise and send it into your system. Performing your own mic test will not reveal this fault as you have both the mic being tested and bleed audio from your hedphones being shown. Best to test your headphones are not bleeding by turning off your mics and talking into your headphones to see if there is any bleed through the headphone jack.

@AmigoAjeno no. there will be difference in different FPS. u would have to change the speed to match it. that's what people do usually. Also, most of HDSLR cameras still have AGC mode, and the quality of audio won't be as good as ones from H4N, so I would still use H4N audio, but it helps a lot to sync in post.

I have the 5D Mark III & the H4 Zoom: if i use the Sescom cable to connec the two then plug a wireless mic into the H4 on one channel and use the general mic of the H4 on the other channel. will have the sound be seperated in the audio tracks of the 5D.

Hey, great vid! Zoom is a cool piece of gear with multitracking and xlrs that can be put to good use. But I've heard that zooms are notorious for their preamps and you can hear a pretty solid hissing noise when doing field recording especially in quiet nature settings. A lot of people prefer Olympus LS 11 for that matter, yet LS does not have multitracking option and xlrs. What is your opinion on this? Have you encountered the hissing noise and if so was there any way you went on about fixing it?

what if the recorder to the transmitter. then just the receiver will receive the audio from transmitter hooked to the recorder?
@JJKim
@JJKim 11 лет назад
because you need a recorder that can record audio from the receiver. just with transm. and receiver, you can't record audio. since HDSLRs have very audio input, you can do it like we used to do with regular video cameras. hope that helps.

Ive tried this a couple of times, and the audio on my T3i is really bad when I listened to it in Premiere Pro. Good enough to sync it later with the audio H4N, but really bad to listen too, unusable. Apparently you do need a attenuated 12db cord from the H4n to your camera if you want clear audio on both audio tracks. Took me a month or so to realize this. One such cord is the Sescom LN2MIC-ZOOMH4N 3.5mm Line to Microphone Attenuation Cable for HDSLR Cameras. which is built specifically for the H4N going to DSLRs. Forgive me if someone has allready mentioned this im up late a really tired.

I don't use my Zoom H4n PRO much because of my type of video (TOY R/C Model Planes) where I need someone to figure a way for my Canon XA-30 or T5i to take my H4n PRO from pause to record and back to pause as I press the Record/Pause button on the camera. I have the Wired Remote for the H4n PRO but need the H4n PRO better synced with the Record/Pause of my camera as there many shots are very short 3 to 10 seconds and as many shots as 25 to 30 or more in a single flight. and can be of different aircraft. So you can see the synchronization of audio can be very time consuming if not at all impossible. Any help out there PLZ.

Great video, exactly the kind of setup I'll be going for. But one question: Does anybody know what one would call or where to get the "rig" mounted on top of the camera? Simply the stuff that goes from the hot shoe, and then holds both the H4n and the lav-mic reciever? I've got no idea what that kinda rig gear is called, but well, I need it to mount my mic and zoom on it. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

@lindamuvic8110
@lindamuvic8110 8 лет назад
Standard stereo mini plugs don't work well with the T3I there is a lot of hissing clicks Ect, the out put for headphones is to loud and has to be attenuated 25db. Sescom makes a cable that does this, and it works well make , however sure that you check your levels and adjust accordingly. The more expensive canon cameras attenuate automatically. .

Dear Mr. Jj Kim, since I'm just a rookie, please answer if you may: 1. can we just use wireless microphone & its receiver, and then record the sound straight to the dslrs, using the 3,5mm input? 2. which one do you recommend: record the sound using zoom h4n straight to the dslrs, or recorded it separately? I'm very grateful for your answer. Many thanks :)

@gabrielsaldana3168
@gabrielsaldana3168 10 лет назад
Thanks for the vid. Have you noticed any drop in quality by routing sound to the camera vs. syncing in post using audio directly from the Zoom? My thinking was always that the camera's circuitry could only capture limited quality. In other words, you might get the sound to record by rerouting, but once it's out of the Zoom and back into the camera, is the Zoom's pristine audio quality then downgraded to the "lower" audio recording abilities of the camera, rendering the Zoom's capturing abilities useless? Don't know if that's the case but it seems to make sense.

basically we connect the zoom into the camera with the splitter signal, and then when we hit record on the Zoom without hitting play we can set the recording levels properly, and without recording on the Zoom if we record on camera the audio leveled from the zoom goins into the CF card toguether with the footage? so there is no more Post syncing? correct? also another quick questions will be: is there any changes when you shoot either on 24, 25 or 30? or it syncs automatically?

I got a couple quesitons. First is how much would a setup like yours cost? Meaning everything with the audio, plugins, camera, etc. I have 2-3k and I originally wanted to buy a Lumix GH3, but I'd only have one lens and not much left to work with based on money. Would you recommend going for a nice camera and add on later? or buy something fairly nice with quality and buy multiple lenses with a bunch of parts to add to it (shotgun, zoom, etc)?

If camera audio levels are high (or low) you will not know, and when you moving can create noise (contact problems) . My sugestion.. monitoring audio level directly in the camera (output phones) (i do this way). You can balance output level (zoom h4n) with input camera levels properly, for best audio (it should already be) (none high or too low - both with audio levels in 50%, is good start point). Your choice is better for non output phones cameras. You can use The Zoom H4n output-phones to phones (of corse) or LINE signal

@Lovealishious
@Lovealishious 9 лет назад
So, this set-up that you have here should record the sound from the H4N and the DSLR together on one SD card (the camera)? So, why do you need another mic (the blue XLR that you have coming from the bottom of the H4N? Just curious. I have an external mic, but it would obviously be more convenient in the field to be able to capture good sound quality without dragging it around with me.
@lovetowntv
@lovetowntv 9 лет назад
No but I did run a test. Turns out the h4n won't record unless there's a SD card in it so what appears to have happened is that the audio from the H4n recorded onto my SD card on my DSLR but also onto the card in the h4n.
@Lovealishious
@Lovealishious 9 лет назад
LovetownTV So, the H4N records onto both SD cards? In that case, setting it up like this will definitely increase the sound quality of the DSLR. I like this. Thanks for your help, Lovetown.

Be careful with this system. I have had my headphones act as a microphone and audio picked up by my headphones has ended up on my camera audio. I checked audio before recording as Jj Kim did. However when you are wearing the mic and headphones yourself it is almost impossible to tell if your headphones are sending ghost audio. Try tapping on your headphones to see if the audio from them is picked up in your camera. This didn't seem to be a problem with earbuds, only my headphones.

med-high, I would say, but I always check the meters on the screen before I rely on my ears.
