Suzuki $7.875. Caufield $7.850. Slav $7.6. Is this a prototype roster for the future? I'm loving this ride.

Seems like it. Montreal is building around their young captain to gauge what the players they want to keep should get. Only a superstar might get more, but by that point, the cap might be raised further and you can still renegotiate with the other players if they feel they're worth more.

Might be a huge mistake signing them that high when they proved nothing yet or not much. Bridge contract was the way to go. Member back in the days, Oilers with Taylor Hall, Nugents Hopkins etc? How that aged well? That's what I thought! Smh

Red Wings fan, here, and I really tip my hat to Habs management for what they are building there in Montreal🎩! They have the foundations of a really strong, settled, perennial future playoff contender simmering along nicely, at present. The Habs' drafting, scouting, trading and overall cap management work is perhaps not getting the full attention/praise that it should do outside Montreal, at present. Impressive stuff👏!

More than a great deal, that Slaf contract reinforces the team-friendly culture set up by Suzuki and Caufield with their own contract, and using Suzuki as a bench mark. I think this bodes well for future signing as well, because each player that buys into that culture will reinforce it. Now, someone who wants to make more needs to argue that they are more valuable to the habs than their captain, Caufield and Slaf. Polar opposite of the leaf's core 4, taking up 50% + of their team's cap between them.

That time split is roughly the time he was playing with Anderson(who literally missed 5 break aways in a 3 game span and couldn’t aim a puck into water if he was a boat in the ocean) and Newhook who is very clearly NOT a centre at the NHL level. Its good for montreal that he started scoring at the end, that meant that a 8yr extension would be most likely, if he didnt score as much at the end probably would have been a shorter bridge deal, and if scored during bridge deal could have ended being 9-10Mil cap.

It's a great deal for Slafkovsky, Suzuki's contract as the Captain had been established as the benchmark for what the top players will be earning in MTL when they signed it. First line signed up for 23 mil in MTL. Assuming the second line is allocated the same amount, third line half, fourth line a third, that brings the team's spend on forwards to 65 mil in theory , leaving 28 mil for 6 dmen and goal tenders under a 93 mil cap. This is all in theory as it does not factor in players currently on the roster, the contract status of players or the fact that most of the MTL roster will be on entry level deals in the next few years, but provided MTL continues to sign players to these kind of long term deals and the cap continues to grow, MTL will be in a position to have 3, possibly 4 lines at salary parity with their first line. That's kind of bonkers. MTL management is not building a contender, they are building a dynasty with these kinds of 8 y deals.

Draisaitl is probably the ultimate example of this working out. Also worth noting that it doesn't kick in until a year from now, where the cap is supposed to be ~93mil. As an Oilers fan im a little surprised at the Perry signing. The general feeling around the city was it was a great mid-season addition last year, but he didn't carry the "oomph" we hoped he would. But maybe a full year to get in rhythm with the team will do him good.

I don't get why people have a hard time figuring out why someone wouldn't sign/re-sign with Philly. If you're a young player who wants to learn and puts in an honest effort, Tortorella is going to be a great coach. If you're a floater, not so much.

As a habs fan, i think the contract is a current overpay, but in 3-4 years when all our prospects have started to really develop and we start to become solid contenders, and the cap goes up this contract has the potential to be one of the biggest steals in the NHL, say slaf becomes a PPG player and starts to use his body it will be a great contract, it also reinforces the fact that management is willing to bet on the players and themselves and also gives the players a sense of security and that we believe in them

If I was Slafkovsky, I would fire the agent. This is ridiculously low money if we consider the length of the contract. If he signed 6.5m over 3 years, I think that would be ok but for 8 years be making less than Caufield and Suzuki will turn out to be a bargain contract for Montreal within 3 years from now. Remember also, that is 2 years into that contract because this upcoming season he’s still on ELC

Fans jobs are to pull for their favorite players and have allegiance to them. Owners and managements job is to keep the team winning even if that means looking like the bad guy to keep people in the seats when the team is winning again. That's how I am looking at Vegas and Tampa right now. Do you want to be the Pens holding onto the past or the Caps holding on for record books? Or a Chicago team that blew it up, and now has a future in 2 or 3 years?
